This study investigates thermal insulation properties of multi layer materials depending on thickness of air layers. Numerical analysis on the heat flow of different insulating materials was conducted to identify whether their temperature distributions demonstrate the reduced rate of heat transfer conclusively or not. Analytical model is divided into two categories. One is to distinguish temperature distribution of the air-layer materials from the non-air layer ones. The other is to compare the efficacy between eight-layered insulating materials with no air-layer contained and three-layered insulating materials which include an air-layer definitely. In the latter case, the identical thickness is assigned to each material. The effect of thermal insulation by including an air-layer is verified in the first analytical model. The result of the second model shows that the insulation of the eight-layered materials is coterminous at the three-layered ones with an air-layer and the thermal insulation of the two materials is imperceptible. The benefits of cost and energy saving are anticipated if air-layers are efficiently incorporated in multi layer insulating materials in a greenhouse.
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of air velocity on the thermal resistance of wool ensembles. Three suits for men with different weaving structure and density were made with the same design and size for the study. In addition, Y-shirt, underwear, and socks were prepared for constructing the ensembles. Thermal insulation of air layer and 3 ensembles were measured by using thermal manikin in environmental chamber controlled at 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 65% RH with various air velocity. The results were as follows: 1. Thermal resistance of air layer was 0.079 m2.$^{\circ}C$/W with no air velocity(less than 0.2m/sec). 2. Thermal resistance of air layer decreased with increasing the air velocity rapidly. When the air velocity was 0.25 and 2.89 m/sec, the decreasing rate was 15% and 61%, respectively compared with no air velocity. 3. While there was little difference among the effective thermal insulation of 3 ensembles having different weaving structure and density with no air velocity, there was sharp difference among them when the air velocity increased. That is, the decreasing rate of effective thermal insulation of the ensemble which has higher air permeability was higher. 4. The decreasing rates of the effective thermal resistances of plain, twill and satin ensemble were 61, 54, and 49%, respectively when the air velocity was 2.89 m/sec which was a maximum air velocity in this study.
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the thermal insulation of air-filled winter jackets according to the amount of air-filler using a thermal manikin. The insulation of these jackets' was compared to a down padded jacket with an identical design and size. The amounts of air-filler were 100% (26,219 cm3), 70% (18,645 cm3), 50% (13,110 cm3), and 0% (0 cm3). The results showed that a clothing insulation (Icl) of 0%, 50%, 70%, and 100% air, and 100% down jackets was 0.208, 0.243, 0.207, 0.176, and 0.315 clo, respectively. In addition, the down jacket with waisttaped had a clothing insulation of 0.369 clo. However, the highest value of clothing insulation per clothing weight was the 50% air-filled jacket in all conditions. In terms of regional power consumption of the thermal manikin, the down jacket consumed less power for the shoulder and chest than the air-filled jackets. In conclusion, in order to maximize the thermal insulation of air-filled jackets, an optimal amount of air-filler, that is, an amount which does not compromise (break) the layer of inner air between the surface of manikin and the lining of the jacket, should be explored. Further studies on lining materials, end-closed design, and changes in thermal insulation under the conditions of strong wind or heavy snow are recommended.
Global efforts have made to reduce energy consumption and $CO_2$ gas emission. One of the weakest parts for energy loss through the whole building components is building envelopes. Lots of technologies to increase the thermal performance of building envelopes have been introduced in recent year. Transparent Insulation Wall(TIW) is a new technology for building insulation and has been function both solar transmittance and thermal insulation. A mathematical model of a Transparent Insulation Wall equipped with south wall was proposed in order to predict thermal performance under varying climates(summer and winter). Unsteady state heat transfer equations were set up using an energy balance equation and solved using Gauss-Seidel iteration solution procedure. The thermal performance of the TIW determined from a wall surface and air layer temperature, non-airconditioned room temperature and air conditioning load. As a result, this numerical study shows that the TIW is effective in an air conditioning load reduction. Further experimental study is required to establish complete TIW system.
In this study, FVM (Finite Volume Method) which is one of the 2-dimensional numerical approach has been conducted to anticipate the temperature distribution between skin and clothes by the change of air temperature and fabric characteristics including fabric thickness. Several experimental works have been done to understand the thermal insulation effect (If fabrics on a human body by measuring the averaged temperature in the air layer between skin and clothes or by measuring the thermal resistance of fabrics. However, the formal method is inconvenient to measure the temperature distribution in the air layer to evaluate the insulation rate of the clothes on the skin because the real size of the clearance between skin and the clothes is too small to place the temperature sensor, and in the Tatter method the relationship between human body and the fabrics are ignored. However, the numerical method will be very effective and economical way to evaluate the insulation efficiency of clothes when the computational result is in the reliable range. As the result of this study, the temperature change in the sir layer between skin and clothes was linear to the fabric thickness and this result coincides with many previous experimental results. Moreover, it is possible to predict the optimum fabric thickness for the best thermal insulation in the air layer between skin and clothes.
In order to clarify the impact of anti-heat insulation pavement on the thermal structure of atmospheric boundary layer, field experiments and numerical simulations were carried out. Field experiment with various pavements were also conducted for 24 hours from 09LST 19 June 2007. And numerical experiment mainly focused on the impact of albedo variation, which is strongly associated with thermal characteristics of insulated pavement materials, on the temporal variation of planterly boundary layer. Numerical model used in this study is one dimension model with Planterly Boundary Layer developed by Oregon State University (OSUPBL). Because anti-heat insulation pavement material shows higher albedo value, not only maximum surface temperature but also maximum surface air temperature on anti-heat insulation pavement is lower than that on asphalt. The maximum value of surface temperature only reach on $49.5^{\circ}C$. As results of numerical simulations, surface sensible heat flux and the height of mixing layer are also influenced by the values of albedo. Therefore the characteristics of urban surface material and its impact on atmosphere should be clarified before the urban planning including improvement of urban heat environment and air quality.
Thermal insulation is used in a variety of applications to protect temperature sensitive products from thermal damage. Several factors affect the performance of insulation packages. Among these factors, the thermal resistance of the insulating wall is the most important factor to determine the performance of the insulating package. In many cases, insulating wall consists of multi-layered structure and the heat transfer through this structure is a very complex process. In this study, an one-dimensional mathematical model, which includes all of the heat transfer principles covering conduction, convection and radiation in multi-layered structure, were developed. Based on this model, several heat transfer phenomena occurred in the air space between the layer of the insulating wall were investigated. From the simulation results, it was observed that the heat transfer through the air space between the layer were dominated by conduction and radiation and the low emissivity of the surface of each solid layer of the wall can dramatically increase the thermal resistance of the wall. For practical use, an equation was derived for the calculation of the thermal resistance of a multi-layered wall.
This study shows the optimum attachment of Two-Way Shape Memory Alloy (TWSMA) springs onto thermal liner and its sewing method for the mass production of fire fighter's intelligent turnout gear. SMA springs were attached to the fabric by four different methods and stitched by two different shapes (square and wave). The durability of the attached springs was tested by laundering up to 50 cycles. Examined were whether the springs would remain attached to the fabric after repeated laundering, the shape memory effect and reaction of the springs, and the anti-corrosiveness of the springs. A Human-Clothing-Environment simulator evaluated thermal insulation according to attachment methods, air layer volume, and stitch types. The findings showed that silicon attached springs remained intact after repeated laundering; in addition, repeated laundering did not influence the responsiveness and anti-corrosiveness of SMAs. Air volume had positive relations with the insulation. Attachment methods or stitch methods had limited impact on the thermal insulation. As a result, a wave type stitch with silicone attachment was suggested as the optimum method to attach the SMA springs onto the intelligent turnout gear for fire fighters.
The purpose of this study is to compare the thermal insulation performance of windows according to the formation of air layer and to evaluate its energy efficiency on a selected standard house. A thermal insulation test, KS F 2278 was used to measure U-values (Heat transmission coefficients) for the following three cases: the first case (Case 1) is a Low-E pair glass (Argon injected), the second case (Case 2) is a Low-E pair glass with the air cap attached on the glass surface, and the third case (Case 3) is a Low-E pair glass, on the frame of which the air cap is attached. The evaluation of the energy efficiency was conducted according to a building energy calculation method from ISO 13790, calculation of energy use for space heating and cooling, using the U-values obtained from the thermal insulation tests. As results of the tests, the U-values of Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3 were $1.668W/m^2{\cdot}K$, $1.568W/m^2{\cdot}K$, and $1.319W/m^2{\cdot}K$ respectively. The Case 2 had about 5.9% lower value than the Case 1, and the Case 3 had about 20.9% lower value than the Case 1. It seems that the thermal performance of the windows is attributed to an increase of the heat resistance and the thickness of air layer. An evaluation of the energy efficiency of the three cases on the selected standard house showed that the amount of heating energy demand per unit area was $7.776kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for the Case $1,6.856kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for the Case 2, and $4.856kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ for the Case 3. This study suggests that the formation of air layer (by using air cap) and its thickness should reduce the heat energy demand and thus improve the energy saving efficiency
