  • Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a biodegradable resin with excellent optical properties, but it is difficult to apply film process. In this study, an attempt was made to improve the processability of CAB using polyactic acid and the mechanical properties using an impact modifier. Polylacitc acid (PLA)/Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) blends with an impact modifier were prepared using a twin screw extruder. The temperature range was $140^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$, and the screw speed was fixed to 200 rpm. To evaluate the miscibility of impact modified CAB/PLA, the glass transition behavior and morphology were observed by DSC and FE-SEM. The mechanical properties were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). In addition, the effect of an impact modifier in the polymer matrix was determined using a notched Izod impact strength tester. Finally, the PLA/CAB/impact modifier 75/25/10 ratio was found to be a compatible system. In the 10wt.% impact modifier, the sample had a 4 times higher izod impact strength than the non-toughening composition.

  • Two techniques for the verification of the phase separation in ferrite phase of primary pressure bounary component materials, the primary cause of thermal aging embrittlement, are presented. Data base of room-temperature Charpy V-notch impact energy during reactor service was estimated as a measure of the degree of embrittlement. The serviceable period of CF-3 and CF-8 alloys as the primary pressure boundary components may be acceptably extended for 60 years of lifetime. However, the integrity of CF-8M alloys can be degraded seriously after several years of service in the nuclear reactor.

  • Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is an effective method of power generation, which has a small impact on the environment and can be utilized semi-permanently. This paper describes a dynamic model for a pilot OTEC plant built by the Institute of Ocean Energy, Saga University, Japan. This plant is based on Uehara cycle, in which binary mixtures of ammonia and water is used as the working fluid. Some simulation results attained by this model and the analysis of the results are presented. The developed computer simulation can be used to actual practice effectively, such as stable control in a steady operation, optimal determination of the plant specifications for a higher thermal efficiency and evaluation of the economic prospects and off-line training for the operators of OTEC plant.

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the spreading and solidification of a droplet impacting onto a solid substrate in the thermal spray process. The finite difference method with volume-of-fluid approach is used to analyze the free surface flow and the source-based enthalpy method is employed to model the latent heat release during the solidification. In this work, the numerical model is validated through the comparison of the present numerical result with experimental data available for the flat substrate.

  • The calculation of the wind field for resource assessment is done by using CFD Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations performed with the commercial software WindSim. A new interface has been created to use mesoscale simulation data from a meteorological model as driving data for the simulations. This method makes it necessary to take into account thermal effects on the wind field to exploit the full potential of this method. The procedure for considering thermal effects in CFD wind field simulations as well as the impact of thermal effects on the wind field simulations is presented. Simulations for non-neutral atmospheric conditions with the developed method are consistent with expected behavior and show an improvement of simulation results compared with observations.

  • In this paper, we analyzed of growth and electrical characteristics of micro-cracks with thermal effect in PV module. The micro-cracks are increasing the breakage risk over the whole value chine from the wafer to the finished module, because the wafer or cell is exposed to mechanical stress. we experimentally analyze the direct impact of micro-cracks on the module power and the consequences after artificial aging. The first step, we made micro-cracks in PV module by mechanical load test according to IEC 61215. Next, PV modules applied the thermal cycling test, because microcracks accelerated aging by thermal cycling test. according to IEC61215. Before every test, we checked output and EL image of PV module.

  • Due to the insulation and the air-tightness requirement in modern buildings have resulted NBS(New Building Syndrome) and SBS(Sick Building Syndrome) of IAQ problems. Therefore, energy efficient way of solving such IAQ issues are of major concern in these days and building industries. This paper introduces a method to improve thermal performance with a DI(Dynamic Insulation) concept. The characteristic of the dynamic insulation is that the lower U-value as the higher air velocity through the DI in a micro level. A thermal performance monitoring study has been conducted to show the energy impact of porous DI over the static insulation material. The results show that up to 45% could be improved in the case with DI compared to the conventional insulation.

  • Direct safety injection into the reactor vessel downcomer annulus(DVI) is a fundamental feature of the KNGR(Korean Next Generation Reactor) four-train safety injection system. The numerical analysis of thermal mixing of ECC(Emergency Core Cooling) water through DVI with the water in the RVDC(Reactor Vessel Downcomer) annulus has been performed, in order to study the impact of nozzle location on the pressurized thermal shock and safety analysis. The results of this study show that the thermal mixing due to the natural circulation induced by the limiting accident conditions is sufficient to prevent temperature in the RVDC from dropping to the level of concern for PTS. When the DVI nozzle is located right above the cold leg, the temperature distribution at the outlet of flow field is most uniform. The tool used for numerical analysis is CFDS-FLOW3D.

  • We investigated thermal, rheological, morphological and mechanical properties of a binary blend of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate adipate) (PBSA). The blends were extruded and their molded properties were examined. DSC thermograms of blends indicated that the thermal properties of PLA did not change noticeably with the amount of PBSA, but thermogravimetric analysis showed that thermal stability of the blends was lower than that of pure PLA and PBSA. Immiscibility was checked with thermal data. The rheological properties of the blends changed remarkably with composition. The tensile strength and modulus of blends decreased with PBSA content. Interestingly, however, the impact strength of PLA/PBSA (80/20) blend was seriously increased higher than the rule of mixture. Morphology of the blends showed a typical sea and island structure of immiscible blend. The effect of the blend composition on the biodegradation was also investigated. In the early stage of the degradation test, the highest rate was observed for the blend containing $80wt\%$ PBSA.

  • The thermal stresses induced by difference in Coefficient of Thermal Expansion between FR-4 board and 63Sn-37Pb solder joint directly affect the reliability of 63Sn-37Pb solder joint. This research, thus, focuses to investigate the crack initiation and propagation behavior around solder joint by imposing a designed Acceleration Life Test Procedure on solder joint by using a newly manufactured Thermal Impact Experimental Apparatus. The fracture mechanism of the solder joint was found to be highly influenced by thermal stresses. The reliability of solder joint was evaluated by using a failure probability model in terms of varying parameters such as frequency and temperature. The relationship between failure probability and safety factor was also studied.
