PURPOSE. All-ceramic restorations required extensive tooth preparation. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate a minimally invasive preparation and thickness of monolithic zirconia crowns, which would provide sufficient mechanical endurance and strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Crowns with thickness of 0.2 mm (group 0.2, n=32) or of 0.5 mm (group 0.5, n=32) were milled from zirconia and fixed with resin-based adhesives (groups 0.2A, 0.5A) or zinc phosphate cements (groups 0.2C, 0.5C). Half of the samples in each subgroup (n=8) underwent thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML)(TC: $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, $2{\times}3,000cycles$, 2 min/cycle; ML: 50 N, $1.2{\times}10^6cycles$), while the other samples were stored in water ($37^{\circ}C/24h$). Survival rates were compared (Kaplan-Maier). The specimens surviving TCML were loaded to fracture and the maximal fracture force was determined (ANOVA; Bonferroni; ${\alpha}=.05$). The fracture mode was analyzed. RESULTS. In both 0.5 groups, all crowns survived TCML, and the comparison of fracture strength among crowns with and without TCML showed no significant difference (P=.628). Four crowns in group 0.2A and all of the crowns in group 0.2C failed during TCML. The fracture strength after 24 hours of the cemented 0.2 mm-thick crowns was significantly lower than that of adhesive bonded crowns. All cemented crowns provided fracture in the crown, while about 80% of the adhesively bonded crowns fractured through crown and die. CONCLUSION. 0.5 mm thick monolithic crowns possessed sufficient strength to endure physiologic performance, regardless of the type of cementation. Fracture strength of the 0.2 mm cemented crowns was too low for clinical application.
Statement of problems. The heat produced during polymerization of polymer-based provisional materials may cause thermal damage to the vital pulp. Purpose. This study was performed to evaluate the exotherm reaction of the polymerbased provisional materials during polymerization by differential scanning calorimetry and to compare the temperature changes of different types of resins. Material and methods. Three dimethacrylate-based materials (Protemp 3 Garant, Luxatemp Plus, Luxatemp Fluorescence) and five monomethacrylate- based material (Snap, Alike, Unifast TRAD, Duralay, Jet) were selected. Temperature changes of polymer-based provisional materials during polymerization in this study were evaluated by D.S.C Q-1000 (TA Instrument, Wilmington, DE, USA). The following three measurements were determined from the temperature versus time plot: (1) peak temperature, (2) time to reach peak temperature, (3) heat capacity. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison Bonferroni test at the significance level of 0.05. Results. The mean peak temperature was $39.5^{\circ}C({\pm}\;1.0)$. The peak temperature of the polymer-based provisional materials decreased in the following order: Duralay > Unifast TRAD, Alike > Jet > Luxatemp Plus, Protemp 3 Garant, Snap, Luxatemp Fluorescence. The mean time to reach peak temperature was 95.95 sec $({\pm}\;64.0)$. The mean time to reach peak temperature of the polymer-based provisional materials decreased in the following order: Snap, Jet > Duralay > Alike > Unifast TRAD > Luxatemp Plus, Protemp 3 Garant, Luxatemp Fluorescence. The mean heat capacity was 287.2 J/g $({\pm}\;107.68)$. The heat capacity of the polymer-based provisional materials decreased in the following order: Duralay > TRAD, Jet, Alike > Snap, Luxatemp Fluorescence, Protemp 3 Garant, Luxatemp Plus. Conclusion. The heat capacity of materials, determined by D.S.C., is a factor in determining the thermal insulating properties of restorative materials. The peak temperature of PMMA was significantly higher than others (PEMA, dimethacrylate). No significant differences were found among PEMA (Snap) and dimethacrylate (P >0.05). The time to reach peak temperature was greatest with PEMA, followed by PMMA and dimethacrylate. The heat capacity of PMMA was significantly higher than others (PEMA, dimethacrylate). No significant differences were found among PEMA and dimethacrylate (P >0.05).
Dental caries, one of the most frequent dental disease, become larger because it can be thought as a simple disease. Further more, it can progress to unexpected root canal therapy with fabrication of crown that needs reduction of tooth structure. Base is required in a large caries and ZOE, ZPC, glass ionomer are used frequently as base material. They, with restorative material, can affect the longevity of the restoration. In this study, we assume that the mandibular 1st molar has deep class I cavity. So, installing the 3 base material, 3 kinds of fillings were restored over the base as follows; 1) amalgam only, 2) amalgam with ZPC, 3) amalgam with ZOE, 4) amalgam with GI cement, 5) gold inlay with ZPC, 6) gold inlay with GI cement, 7) composite resin only, 8) composite resin with GI cement. After develop the 3-dimensional model for finite element analysis, we observe the distribution of stress and temperature with force of 500N to apical direction at 3 point on occlusal surface and temperature of 55 degree, 15 degree on entire surface. The analyzed results were as follow : 1. Principal stress produced at the interface of base, dentin, cavity wall was smallest in case of using GI cement as base material under the amalgam. 2. Principal stress produced at the interface of base, dentin, cavity wall was smaller in case of using GI cement as a base material than ZPC under gold inlay. 3. Composite resin-filled tooth showed stress distributed over entire tooth structure. In other words, there was little concentration of stress. 4. ZOE was the most effective base material against hot stimuli under the amalgam and GI cement was the next. In case of gold inlay, GI cement was more effective than ZPC. 5. Composite resin has the small coefficient of thermal conductivity. So, composite resin filling is the most effective insulating material.

An industrial safety helmet primarily intended to protect the wearer's head. It is to prevent or reduce the danger due to flying or dropping objects, falling and prevent the danger due to an electric shock given to the head. However, thermal discomfort of the head is one of the main complaints in the case of wearing safety helmet. Ventilation holes are not allowed in safety helmets on domestic regulations except for industrial safety helmets which are to protect wearer's head against flying or dropping objects. This paper is to produce the need for enlargement of allowing on ventilation holes' regulation to class B. This study reviewed foreign standards' regulations on ventilation holes of safety helmets. Some standards recommend that ventilation may be improved when fresh air is able to enter the helmet around its lower edge and to exit via holes in the helmet located in the upper one third of the helmet. And in the experiments, relationships of ventilation holes and the temperature over the head are analyzed. The experimental results show that the cooling effect of ventilation holes in the upper one third of the helmet is meaningful.
In this study, optical and mechanical properties were investigated with 4 kinds of commercial dental enamels. As a result of EDS analysis $SiO_2,\;Na_{2}O,\;Al_{2}O_3\;and\;K_{2}O$ were the main components of commercial dental enamels. In case of H specimen, content of $SiO_2\;and\;K_2O$ were more than that of another specimens. Starting powder and fired specimens were glass ceramics which were consist of amorphous phase and leucite (crystalline) phase. Crystallization did not occurred during firing process, since the XRD peak intensity was similar between starting powder and fired specimens. As a result of differential thermal analysis, $T_g$ and crystalline temperature was varied with composition in the range of $548\sim576^{\circ}C$ and $735\sim780^{\circ}C$ respectively. 0.5mm thickness dental enamel specimens showed sufficient translucent properties. However, transmittance and reflectance were lower than 5% result from scattering due to the refractive index difference between glass and crystalline phase. 3 point bending strength was in the range of 73.9$\sim$101.8MPa which was similar or slightly higher than enamel of natural teeth and Vickers hardness was higher than enamel of natural teeth more than 100.
The objective of this study was to characterize the mechanical properties of $Y_{2}O_{3}$-containing glass infiltrated ceramic core material, which was made by pressureless powder packing method. A pure alumina powder with a grain size of about $4{\mu}m$ was packed without pressure is silicon mold to form a bar shaped sample, and applied PVA solution as a binder. Samples were sinterd at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. After cooling, $Y_{2}O_{3}$-containing glass($SiO_{2},\;Y_{2}O_{3},\;B_{2}O_{3},\;Al_{2}O_{3}$, ect) was infiltrated to the sinterd samples at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and cooled. Six different proportions $Y_{2}O_{3}$ of were used to know the effect of the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient between alumina powder and glass. The samples were ground to $3{\times}3{\times}30$ mm size and polished with $1{\mu}m$ diamond paste. Flexural strength, fracture toughness, hardness and other physical properties were obtained, and the fractured surface was examined with SEM and EPMA. Ten samples of each group were tested and compared with In-Ceram(tm) core materials of same size made in dental laboratory. The results were as follows : 1. The flexural strengths of group 1 and 3 were significantly not different with that of In-Ceram, but other experimental groups were lower than In-Ceram. 2. The shrinkage rate of samples was 0.42% after first firing, and 0.45% after glass infiltration. Total shrinkage rate was 0.87%. 3. After first firing, porosity rate of experimental groups was 50%, compared with 22.25% of In-Ceram. After glass infiltration, porosity rate of experimental groups was 2%, and 1% in In-Ceram. 4. There was no statistical difference in hardness between two materials tested, but in fracture toughness, group 2 and 3 were higher than In-Ceram. 5. The thermal expansion coefficients of experimental groups were varied to $4.51-5.35{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ according to glass composition, also the flexural strengths of samples were varied. 6. In a view of SEM, many microparticles about $0.5{\mu}m$ diameter and $4{\mu}m$ diameter were observed in In-Ceram. But in experimental group, the size of most particles was about $4{\mu}m$, and a little microparticles was observed. The results obtained in this study showed that the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficients between alumina powder and infiltrated glass affect the flexural strength of alumin/glass composite. The $Y_{2}O_{3}$-containing glass infiltrated ceramic core made by powder packing method will takes less time and cost with sufficient flexural strength similar to all ceramic crown made with slip casting technique.
In this research, we manufactured the paste opaque porcelains using Propylene Glycol (PG) and Buthylene Glycol (BG) as a solvent, and compared the composition of solvents, the coefficient of thermal expansion, the particle size distribution, the viscosity and bonding strength to metal, and the tone with those of the commercial products(Duceram Plus, Duceram GmbH; VMK 95, Vita Co.; Noritake EX-3, Noritake Co.)used in the clinical field. The results of the research were as follows: 1. The result of solvent analysis indicated that the solvents included in the paste opaque porcelains of the control group were mainly composed of Glycols. 2. From the Coefficient of thermal expansion measurement, we drew out the following results; testing group: $14.0\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$, Duceram Plus: $13.9\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$, VMK 95: $14.3\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$, and Noritake EX-3: $13.3\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$. 3. Seen from the result of particle size distribution measurement, the experimental group was similar to the control group in 1$\mu m$ below, but the experimental group marked the highest distribution of 61% in the case of between 1$\mu m$ and 5$\mu m$. Between 5$\mu m$ and 10$\mu m$, they showed relatively similar distribution, and Noritake EX-3 was turned out the highest distribution of 29% in 10$\mu m$ above. 4. From the result of viscosity measurement, Duceram plus showed the highest viscosity throughout all the measurements followed by Noritake Ex-3, experimental group and VMK 95 in decreasing order. 5. The result of bonding strength measurement was EX 35.53 $\beta\acute{A}$, DU 40.88 $\beta\acute{A}$, VM 39.43 $\beta\acute{A}$, and NO 35.39 $\beta\acute{A}$, and no significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control groups(P>0.05). 6. The measurement of the tone indicated that the $L^*$ value of the experimental group was 86.89 0.63 in average, which is higher than the control group in its brightness. In the case of the $a^*$ value, Duceram Plus, VMK 95 and EX-3 showed positive value, whereas the testing group was turned out negative value. In $b^*$ value, Duceram Plus proved the highest. From the results of this research, the paste opaque porcelains using Propylene Glycol (PG) and Buthylene Glycol (BG) as a solvent did not make differences from the commercial products that are actually used in the clinical fields. Therefore, it is possible to utilize Propylene Glycol (PG) and Buthylene Glycol (BG) for the paste opaque porcelains of P.F.M crown. It is also recommended that further researches concerning the compositions and forms of powder, the types of organic solvent components and the ratio of mixture proceeded in order to improve the level of productivity in the future.
Purpose: Damage to pulse crops by wild birds is a serious problem. The damage is to such an extent that the rate of damage during the period between seeding and cotyledon stages reaches 54.6% on an average. In this study, a crop-position detection method was developed wherein infrared (IR) sensors were used to determine the cotyledon position under a vinyl mulch. Methods: IR sensors that helped measure the temperature were used to locate the cotyledons below the vinyl mulch. A single IR sensor module was installed at three locations of the crops (peanut, red lettuce, and crown daisy) in the cotyledon stage. The representative thermal response of a $16{\times}4$ pixel area was detected using this sensor in the case where the distance from the target was 25 cm. A spatial image was applied to the two-dimensional temperature distribution using a non-integral moving-average method. The collected data were first processed by taking the moving average via interpolation to determine the frame where the variance was the lowest for a resolution unit of 1.02 cm. Results: The temperature distribution was plotted corresponding to a distance of 10 cm between the crops. A clear leaf pattern of the crop was visually confirmed. However, the temperature distribution after the normalization was unclear. The image conversion and frequency-conversion graphs were obtained based on the moving average by averaging the points corresponding to a frequency of 40 Hz for 8 pixels. The most optimized resolutions at locations 1, 2, and 3 were found on 3.4, 4.1, and 5.6 Pixels, respectively. Conclusions: In this study, to solve the problem of damage caused by birds to crops in the cotyledon stage after seeding, the vinyl mulch is punched after seeding. The crops in the cotyledon stage could be accurately located using the proposed method. By conducting the experiments using the single IR sensor and a sliding mechanical device with the help of a non-integral interpolation method, the crops in the cotyledon stage could be precisely located.
The purpose of this study was to compare the microleakage of the IPS Empress ceramic crown according to 1) margin types such as rounded shoulder and bevel, 2) margin locations such as enamel and dentine, 3) resin cement types such as Variolink and Bistite. For this study, 80 extracted premolar teeth were used. After 10 experimental dies were prepared for each group, the IPS Empress ceramic crowns were fabricated on the dies and cemented with one of two types of resin cement. After 1,000 cycles of thermal changes were given with the thermocycling unit, each specimen was sectioned with a low speed diamond saw in both the buccolingual and the mesiodistal direction. The microleakage was then measured with a stereo microscope. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Every experimental group showed microleakage. The microleakage of the crowns which had a rounded shoulder on enamel cemented with Variolink was the lowest of all. The resulting rank of the mean microleakage was rounded shoulder on enamel using Variolink(0.601mm), rounded shoulder on enamel using Bistite (0.794mm), bevel on enamel using Variolink (0.826mm), rounded shoulder on dentine using Variolink(1.054mm), bevel on enamel using Bistite(1.087mm), rounded shoulder on dentine using Bistite(1.176mm), bevel on dentine using Variolink(1.258mm), and bevel on dentine using Bistite(1.467mm). 2. The statistically significant differences in the microleakage were found in 4 cases: rounded shoulder on enamel using Variolink and bevel on dentine using Variolink, rounded shoulder on enamel using Variolink and bevel on dentine using Bistite, rounded shoulder on enamel using Bistite and bevel on dentine using Bistite, bevel on enamel using Variolink and bevel on dentine using Bistite. 3. The microleakage of rounded shoulder finish line was lower than that of bevel finish line. The statistically significant differences were found with respect to the type of finish lines. 4. The microleakage of the finish line on enamel was lower than that of finish line on dentine. The statistically significant differences were found with respect to the location of the finish lines. 5. The microleakage of the Variolink cement was lower than that of the Bistite cement. The statistically significant differences were found with respect to the resin cements.
