Cancer progression is attained by uncontrolled cell division and metastasis. Increase in tumor size triggers different vascular channel formation to address cell nutritional demands. These channels are responsible for transferring of nutrients and gaseous to the cancer cells. Cancer vascularization is regulated by numerous factors including vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs). These factors play an important role during embryonic development. Members included in this group are VEGFA, VEGFB, VEGFC, PIGF and VEGFD which markedly influence cellular growth and apoptosis. Being freely diffusible these proteins act in both autocrine and paracrine fashions. In this review, genetic characterization these molecules and their putative role in cancer staging has been elaborated. Prognostic significance of these molecules along with different stages of cancer has also been summarized. Brief outline of ongoing efforts to target hot spot target sites against these VEGFs and their cognate limitations for therapeutic implications are also highlighted.
Sarcopenia is the degenerative loss of muscle mass and function with aging. Recently sarcopenia was recognized as a clinical disease by the International Classification of Disease, 10th revision, Clinical Modification. An imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation causes a gradual loss of muscle mass, resulting in a decline of muscle function as a progress of sarcopenia. Many mechanisms involved in the onset of sarcopenia include age-related factors as well as activity-, disease-, and nutrition-related factors. The stage of sarcopenia reflecting the severity of conditions assists clinical management of sarcopenia. It is important that systemic descriptions of the disease conditions include age, sex, and other environmental risk factors as well as levels of physical function. To develop a new therapeutic intervention needed is the detailed understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms by which apoptosis, autophagy, atrophy, and hypertrophy occur in the muscle stem cells, myotubes, and/or neuromuscular junction. The new strategy to managing sarcopenia will be signal-modulating small molecules, natural compounds, repurposing of old drugs, and muscle-specific microRNAs.
Undifferentiated stem cells are being studied to obtain information on the therapeutic potential of isolates that are produced. Dental Pulp Stem Ccell (DPSC) may provide an abundant supply of highly proliferative, multipotent Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC), which are now known to be capable of regenerating a variety of human tissues including bone and other dental structures. Many factors influence DPSC quality and quantity, including the specific methods used to isolate, collect, concentrate, and store these isolates once they are removed. Ancillary factors, such as the choice of media, the selection of early versus late passage cells, and cryopreservation techniques may also influence the differentiation potential and proliferative capacity of DPSC isolates. This literature review concludes that due to the delicate nature of DPSC, more research is needed for dental researchers and clinicians to more fully explore the feasibility and potential for isolating and culturing DPSCs extracted from adult human teeth in order to provide more accurate and informed advice for this newly developing field of regenerative medicine.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the general characteristics and health behaviors of students with non-therapeutic substance use. Methods: This secondary data analysis used data from the 17th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2021). Analyses of the 54,848 adolescents used descriptive statisics, the Rao-Scott χ2 test, and logistic regression. Results: The risk factors for substance use among students were anxiety, loneliness, living separately from family, suicidal ideation, e-cigarette use, and high stress. Conclusion: The findings help identify the risk factors for non-therapeutic drug use among adolescents. Since South Korea does not have a drug prevention program for its adolescent population, an educational plan based on these findings could help prevent adolescent substance abuse.
The purposes of this study are first, to develop the group counseling program based on Satir’s family sculpture technique, second to investigate the therapeutic factors of Satir’s family sculpture in group counseling. To perform this study, 8 session of time limited(3 hours) group counseling were carried out. There were 12 participants in this group. The major findings were as follows: 1) the rank order fro therapeutic factors were university, group cohesiveness, instillation of hope, family reenactment, self-understanding and altruism. 2) through the family sculpture technique, group participants saw their communication patterns. They found out that use communication patterns to hide their low self-esteem. They learned the alternative communication style. 3) the participants developed the sense of self-disclosure, empathy and trust in the group. Self disclosure, empathy and trust facilitated a deeper level of therapeutic group interaction. 4) in observing their group members do their family sculpture, participants found out that every family has some problem that the family conflict is universal thing, 5) the participants had opportunity to share their feelings that were hidden deep inside Intensive emotions following self disclosure led to catharsis, 6) the participants developed a good feeling toward their group and it led to group cohesiveness. 7) through the family sculpture technique, the participants gained a better understanding on their role and position within their families 8) through the family sculpture technique, they gained a better understanding of their family. They found their family members’ psychological positions and unfinished emotional businesses and thus they could restructure their family sculptures. 9) the participants had the opportunity to feel what it is like to become parents themselves, They became to see their parents as individuals. 10) the participants acted out what they wanted to do but could not do in the past. They saw the possibility of change and development in themselves.
Background: A transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is one of the methods for the conservative treatment of the lumbar spinal stenosis. As efforts to prolong the therapeutic duration and to predict the outcome of TFESI are very important, we analyzed factors considered to be associated with the therapeutic duration of a TFESI. Methods: Between August 2006 and March 2007, 69 patients (Group A: patients with no pain relief, Group B: patients with pain relief of less than 6 months, Group C: patients with pain relief of more than 6 months) who failed to the medical treatment were included to undertake a fluoroscopic-guided TFESI. Prior to treatment, the VAS (visual analogue scale), ODI (Oswestry disability index), BDI (Beck depression inventory), and BAI (Beck anxiety inventory) scores were determined to evaluate the degree of pain, disability, and psychological status. The VAS and ODI scores were used to assess the degree of pain relief. To identify the total duration of pain relief, regular outpatient visits for six months were conducted, and for the patients who were not able to visit the outpatient clinic regularly, outcome was assessed by telephone interviews after six months. Results: The dural sac cross-sectional area (DSCSA), ODI, pain duration, BDI, BAI, and age showed similar distribution for patients in the A, B, and C groups. Conclusions: The DSCSA, ODI, pain duration, BDI, BAI, and age were not associated with the therapeutic duration of TFESI in lumbar spinal stenosis patients.
Since the development of sophisticated molecular carriers such as octereotides for peptide receptor targeting and monoclonal antibodies against various antigens associated with specific tumor types, radionuclide therapy (RNT) employing open sources of therapeutic agents is promising modality for treatment of tumors. furthermore, the emerging of new therapeutic regimes and new approaches for tumor treatment using radionuclide are anticipated in near future. In targeted radiotherapy using peptides and other receptor based tarrier molecules, the use of radionuclide with high specific activity in formulating the radiopharmaceutical is essential in order to deliver sufficient number of radionuclides to the target site without saturating the target. In order to develop effective radiopharmaceuticals for therapeutic applications, it is crucial to carefully consider the choice of appropriate radionuclides as well as the tarrier moiety with suitable pharmacokinetic properties that could result in good in vivo localization and desired excretion. Up to date, only a limited number of radionuclides have been applied in radiopharmaceutical development due to the constraints in compliance with their physical half-life, decay characteristics, cost and availability in therapeutic applications. In this review article, we intend to provide with the improved understanding of the factors of importance of appropriate radionuclide for therapy with respect to their physical properties and therapeutic applications.
Background: There were several studies comparing prognostic factors in Guillain-Barre syndrome treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis. However, there were controversies in what were significant factors and there were few studies so far comparing the therapeutic outcomes in patients treated with immunoglobulin. This study was aimed to determine the prognostic factors which affected the therapeutic outcome of Guillain-Barre syndrome treated with intravenous immunoglobulin. Method: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome admitted to our hospital between January 1999 and March 2004. All patients were treated with intravenous immunoglobulin. Outcome and prognosis were followed up after four weeks using the overall disability sum score. Results: Thirty-six patients were enrolled in this study. According to the clinical and electrophysiological findings, 17 patients were AIDP, 10 were axonal forms, two were mixed and seven had electrophysiologically no evidence of abnormalities. At a follow-up of four weeks, disabilities at the nadir (p<0.001) and admission (P<0.012), initial manifestations of bulbar symptom (P<0.024) and electrodiagnostic features (P<0.013) were significantly correlated with outcome in patients treated with intravenous immunoglobulin. But only disabilities at the nadir (P<0.033) and electrodiagnostic features (P<0.018) were significant in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: Among the patient treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, the outcomes were significantly different according to the neurological status at the nadir. Therefore early diagnosis, administration of intravenous immunoglobulin and preventing complications during acute stages are essential to minimize neurological deficit and shorten the periods of recovery.
The use of primary breast irraditation with advantage of improved cosmesis in breast cancer may be the potential risks of radiation for a change in the number of normal breast cancers and lung fibrosis. The magnitude of the scattered dose for a variety of radiation treatment techniques from patient of breast cancer and phantom was measured by adequate dosimeters. We can reduce the dose of the normal breast to treated with radiation by understanding the factors contributing to the unwanted dose and by determining ways to decrease this dose.
This study examined the effects of therapeutic communication skills, self esteem and self concept, psychiatric nursing lectures on students' psychiatric nursing practice evaluation scores. The purposes of this study were to determine factors influencing students' psychiatric nursing practice to improve the quality of that practice. The subjects were 123 third year nursing students in the department of nursing of G University in C city. Data were collected from 1989 to 1991 by question-aires and academic records.
