  • The purpose of this study was to invesitigate relationship between rainfall water quality and precipitation characteristic during the accumulated rainfall and rainless period. As the results of the analysis, rainfall water quality was improved in the rainfall duration. Correlation coefficients between rainwater quality and accumulated rainfall were $0.88{\sim}0.99$ except $Cl^-$. and that between rainless period and initial rainfall water quality were $0.62{\sim}0.75$. During the Asian dust event, concentration of the turbidity, BOD and electric conductivity were high. Therefore, it shows that the rainfall water quality is effected by atmospheric conditions before the rainfall events.

  • The water quality in Yongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex. The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to build ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D model baroclinic model which considers tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most applicable on appearing the current system of the stratificated Yongil Bay difference of density. Form the results of simulation considered tidal current only, it can be clarified that the water body flows in the inner bay through the bottom layer and flows out the outer bay through the surface layer in Yongil Bay. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the thermal discharge form POSCO have a little effect on the current system in Yongil Bay, but the diffusion of heat and salt has an important effect upon the formation of the density stratification of the water quality distribution is closely related with the current structure characteristics as well as the tidal residual current system in Yongil Bay.

  • The water quality in Yeongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to built ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D baroclinic model considered tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most appliable on the Yongil Bay where current flows slowly and the flow direction is varied by depths. From the results of simulation considered tidal current only, It am be clearly said the water in Yongil Bay flows in through the surface layer and flows out through the bottom layer. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the heated discharge from POSCO have little effect on the current structure in Yonggil Bay, but have and important effect upon the density structure by diffusion of heat and salt. • In 2016, Benthic Macroinvertebrates Streambed Index (BMSI) was proposed as an index to evaluate streams as benthic macroinvertebrate depending on the substrate type of streambed. However, orignal BMSI were selected without consideration of water quality. Analyzes without water quality do not constitute biological indices based solely on the substrate type of streambed. Therefore, in this study, the indicator value was improvement in consideration of water quality, and the distribution characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrates according to the substrate type of streambed were analyzed under relatively equal water quality conditions. We surveyed 20,155 sampling units in Korea from 2008 to 2018, and we re-estimated each lithophility of 191 taxa. As a result of estimating the streambed of each newly lithophilic value classification group considering the water quality, it was different from the original lithophilic value. Representative integer lithophilic values were newly calculated from 126 taxa among the 191 index taxa used in the analysis. The correlation between new constructed BMSI and community structure was compared and analyzed. It showed extreamely significance (p<0.001) in the dominance index, diversity index, abundance index, and evenness index of the community structure. Diversity index, abundance index, and evenness index showed positive correlation, and dominance index showed negative correlation. The correlation coefficient (r) was the highest in the richness index of about 0.664.

  • The conservation of stream habitats has been gaining more public attention and fish habitat suitability index (HSI) is an important measure for ecological stream habitat assessment. The fish habitat preference is affected not only by physical stream conditions but also by water quality of which HSI was not available due to the lack of field data. The purpose of this study is to estimate the HSI of Zacco platypus for water quality parameters of water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) using the water environment monitoring data provided by the Ministry of Environment (ME). Fish population data merged with water quality were constructed by spatio-temporal matching of nationwide water quality monitoring data with bio-monitoring data of the ME. Two types of the HSI were calculated by the Instream Flow and Aquatic Systems Group (IFASG) method and probability distribution (Weibull) fitting for the four major river basins. Both the HSIs by the IFASG and Weibull fitting appeared to represent the overall distribution and magnitude of fish population and this can be used in stream fish habitat evaluation considering water quality.

  • To investigate water quality and pollution states of rivers in Gwangju city, total of 30 water samples were taken from the main stream of Yeongsan river, Hwangryong river and Gwangju stream in dry and flood seasons. Physico-chemical characteristics of above streams according to pH-Eh and Piper's diagrams we, typically, assigned to natural river water. In the streams, BOD, COD, T-N and T-P indicating water quality mostly increase toward downstream. Notably, water qualities in area near connection between the Gwangju stream and the main stream of Yeongsan river are polluted over V level in rivers and lakes water quality standard. The pollutions are influenced by lift and agricultural foul waters from Gwangju City and farming areas around upstream branches of the Yeongsan river, reasonably. Besides, heavy metals are below the standard in those streams. So, it is considered that the streams are polluted by not industrial but life/agricultural foul waters.

  • Presently, aquatic plants are used for the water purification in inland water. This study was carried out to investigate the water purification effect of aquatic plants, Oenanthe javanica and Typha angustata, The experiment was conducted in outdoor flowing water was conducted for ten days, Water quality was measured in terms of water temperature, COD(chemical oxygen demand), SS(suspended solids), Total N, Total P. The results of field experimentation showed that hydraulic retention time was the earliest in July and August 2003, and there were not any particular changes of monthly water temperature in inflow water and outflow water. As we look at the changes taken place in inflow water and outflow water throughout the whole experiment period, the change of water quality in summer was salient, especially SS removal ratio showed distinguished change as $25\%$, when the pebble filter and aquatic were attached to it. The removal rate of COD, total N total P were $14,7\%,\;8\%\;and\;9\%$, respectively. In relating the length of water extension to the change in water quality, the water quality tended to get lower generally in proportion to hydraulic retention time.

  • The water quality of reservoir can be controled by water quality prediction model because it can not only grasping the present water state but also predicting the water quality in future. In this study, WASP model is used to predict the water quality of Chungju reguration reservoir. This model has some special option which predicts the pollutant outflow phenomenon caused by the contamination sources. So this model is widely used because that can present the scientific basis in this field. This model can help the managers make the right choice of water quality policy. Environmental grade of Chungju reguration reservoir is in III,IV grade which is in bad condition comparatively. The water contamination will be in poor as the year passes. When considering T-N, T-P which are the nutrient to control eutrophication, the concentrated administration about contamination sources is in urgent.

  • Present condition of the Youngsan River pollution is serious. Concentrations of organic materials and nutrients are high and algal bloom takes place frequently. The pollution is mainly caused by domestic wastewater input from urban areas like Kwangju and Naju City. In this study, 6 times of water quality surveys were done for mainstream and tributaries. Delivery ratios of each tributaries are calculated with the water quality and flow data. With Arc/View GIS, sub-basin are divided and pollution loads are estimated. These data are used for water quality modeling. River quality improvement effects are analysed with 5 scenarios including process upgrade of present WWTPs and construction of new WWTPs. These scenarios are applied for the Youngsan River based on the 7Q10 and Q275. And total wastewater treatment cost in the basin is analysed for each scenario.
