This study aims to analyze the current status and characteristics of apartment house unit plans towards spatial differentiation. The 172 house units from 32 housing complexes were selected for this analysis. In this study, factors of residential space plan especially in an apartment house are categorized into general characteristics on floor plan and factors for spatial floor plan. The Primary findings are as follows: (1) General characteristics on floor plan are analyzed based on space organization, area and number of bays. Among apartment houses over 40 pyeong, it seems that differentiation is well applied with various space plans available. (2) A result of an analysis on the factors for spatial floor plan shows that planning a living room with two-open-sides seems to be more common in the tower-shaped apartment blocks which are now on the increase. Moreover, many of them are adopting movable partitions to reflect resident's various demands on space plan. Among all, the extra kitchen in the balcony is planned high portion of 80.4%. And diningroom is positioned on the front side of the residential space along with a livingroom(19.2%). More frequently, dining area tends to face the living room(30.2%) according to the result. Besides dress rooms begin to be placed in each of the bedroom, once planned in one bedroom only while 18.6% of the apartment houses are placing new storages in the entrance to solve lack of storage space due to balcony extension.
The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of apartment housing unit plans based on analyzing overall patterns of housing unit plans and identifying the types of unit plans according to the size and to provide the fundamental data for developing diverse dwelling unit plans of apartment. This study deals with apartment housing unit plans built between 1999 and 2000 in Seoul, the capital region and new town. The major findings of this study are as follows; 1) Most apartment housing unit plans have fixed and uniform layouts. Most apartment housing units have L-DK type meaning they have isolated living room space. Certain layouts(especially $60-85\textrm{m}^2$ sized unit plans) show a "trickle-down" phenomenon with respect to the areas of units according to time series. 2) New plan types are rarely proposed since 2000, especially in large-sized(area more than $120\textrm{m}^2$) and $60-85\textrm{m}^2$ sized plans. 3) Another feature of apartment housing unit plans is increase of the service are (balcony, entrance area, additional kitchen, and storage area), and introduction of masters space (composition of master bedroom, dressing room, powder room, path, and etc.) and etc.)

The purpose of this study was to provide the fundamental data for the effective housing remodeling plan. Through the questionnaire survey, the actual conditions of remodeling in apartment housing were investigated. And as the result of statistic analysis, the relationships between characteristics of remodeling and building life-cycle, and family life-stage, were found out. The major findings of this study are as follows; 1) Most of apartment residents have remodeled the family living space and private living space. In detail, they performed remodeling frequently the change of finishing materials, facilities and equipments, and the change of the location of curtain wall & storage fixtures. 2) It might be predicted that the building life-cycle was influential variable to predict apartment residents' remodeling. Therefore, in planning the support service for the remodeling, the building life-cycle should be taken into consideration.
The purpose of this study is to perform the post occupancy evaluation in apartment housing with the dining room and kitchen(DK) facing the front side, and then to compare them with findings in unit plan facing the back side. A questionnaire survey method was used in this study. These questionnaires were administered, along with an interview, of 200 households in the apartment of 27-28 pyoung($76.50-78.54\textrm{m}^2$), in Gwangju city. Those living in an apartment with DK facing the front side tend to be less satisfied with the physical feature factors. expecially for layout of rooms, location of second bedroom and master bedroom, size and location of storage spaces, and location and size of balcony than those with the DK facing the back side.
Since the late 20th century, construction companies have developed different brands of apartments while keeping the LOHAS, well-being, ubiquitous, and one-stop-living concepts in mind. From this point of view, this study intends to define the diverse space planning needs of apartment residents. The purpose of this study is to suggest optimum guidelines regarding the subject of space requirements and planning by conducting in-depth interviews of residents whose apartment floor size is between $66m^2$ (20 Pyong) and $165m^2$ (50 Pyong) and whose apartment is less than 5 years old. The major findings were as follows: (1) The shortage of storage space in different types of apartment housing units was found to be a chronic problem. Thus, closet sizes mustbe increased. (2) The size of the master bedroom needs to be decreased, whereas the size of the kitchen and dining room as well as the size of the second and/or third bedroom must be increased. More space is required in common areas occupied by the family and larger closets are needed. Less space is required for the master bedroom.
The concept of universal design has become an essential requirement for environmental design, due to the growing population of the aged, and the increasing needs of people with disabilities. This study aims to propose a universal design guideline for apartment housing units that can be adapted to both a general household and a household with elderly or disabled individuals. This design process encompasses literary reviews, and includes the measurements of the dimensions and facilities of currently available apartment housing. The three domestic universal guidelines were reviewed, and a universal design checklist for apartment housing units was developed. Afterward, the individual elements and inclusive factors of universal design, for apartment housing units, were collected and examined according to the each functional space within the home. The results and conclusions are as follows: 1) The factors of universal design are diversified by the division of the functional spaces within the home, such as the private space, the work space and the entertaining space. 2) Due to the lack of space and storage, wheelchairs cannot be used in most currently available apartment types; this problem can be resolved by applying flexibility and optional adaptation. The solutions for the above are additional design factors that will enable more convenient usage and elaborate design.

Transformation of housing space is the most accurate physical trail to understand main needs from residents. The scope of the study targeted the 7 si & gun districts in Gyeongsangnam-do, this study is designed to consider the characteristics of space transformation in rural apartment houses and provide basic materials for the development of rural apartment houses. The results of the study are as follow. First, such spaces as corridor and stairway are transformed into storages and outside the houses are installed tap water facility, bicycle storage. and toilet. Second, in autumn seasons when crops and grains are harvested, parking lot and rooftop are used as the space drying such agricultural products. Third, space transformation within the houses has been different depending on family type and main businesses in terms of function and time to seek efficiency and stability of residence. Fourth, rural residents concentrate on a simple change of space usage and replacement of ageing or dilapidated equipment and facilities rather than space transformation incurring more financial burden.
This study was carried out to evaluate thermal performance of the renewable hybrid heat supply system with solar thermal system and wood pellet boiler for Zero Carbon Green home of apartment houses. The hybrid heat supply system was set up at Korea Institute Energy Research in 2011. The system was comprised of the wood pellet boiler unit with heat capacity designed as 20,000 kacal/hr, a evacuated tubular solar collector 3.74 $m^2$ of aperture area at the $20^{\circ}$ install angle, a 0.3 $m^3$ hot water storage tank, a 0.15 $m^3$ hot water storage tank for space heating. Thermal performance tests for one-house of apartment house were carried out by hot water load and heating load in winter season through the hybrid heat supply system. As a result, hot water energy supplied by the hybrid heat supply system was 11kWh in a day. Solar thermal energy portion was 2.99kWh which is 27% of the total hot water energy supply. wood pellet boiler supply portion was 8.017kWh which is 73% of the total hot water energy supply.
Recently, in Korea, single- or two-person households (50.5%) are becoming the primary family type due to increasing divorce rates, population aging, personal code of values and so on. Hence, small families will lead to a sudden increase of single- or two-person households. People searching for small houses are increasing because of the provision of officetels, one room and urban-life housing as well as economic recession. However, this has led to habitability problems, such as parking, storage space and decline in safety. In this study, we obtain the proper contents from LQI indicators of advanced research and use the indicators to evaluate the residential environment quality. We conduct a post-occupancy-evaluation (POE) survey and compare the habitability satisfaction level of apartment and officetel residents. According to the survey, officetel residents' satisfaction levels are low for the following factors in the order listed: ventilation, storage space, management expenses and facilities for children and the elderly.
