  • The rice belonging to Oryza sativa is not only has significant economic importance, for it is the major source of nutrition for about 3 billion all around the world. But also plays a vital role as a model organism, because it has a number of advantages to be a model plant, such as efficient transformation system and small genome size. Many methods and techniques have been conducted to attempt to distinguish different Oryza sativa species, such as amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), simple sequence repeat (SSR) and so on. However, studies using sequence analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), a region of ribosomal RNA has not been reported until now. This study was undertaken with an aim to understand the phylogenetic relationships among sixteen isolates of Oryza sativa collected from abroad and fifteen isolates collected from Korea, using ribosomal RNA (rRNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences to compare the phylogeny relationships among different Oryza sativa species. The size variation obtained among sequenced nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) ITS region ranged from 515bp to 1000bp. The highest interspecific genetic distance (GD) was found between Sfejare 45 (FR12) and Anapuruna (FR15). Taebong isolate showed the least dissimilarity of the ITS region sequence with other thirty isolates. This consequence will help us further understanding molecular diversification in intra-species population and their phylogenetic analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified unsupervised linear alignment algorithm for building an aligned corpus. The original algorithm inserts null characters into both of two aligned strings (source string and target string), because the two strings are different from each other in length. This can cause some difficulties like the search space explosion for applications using the aligned corpus with null characters and no possibility of applying to several machine learning algorithms. To alleviate these difficulties, we modify the algorithm not to contain null characters in the aligned source strings. We have shown the usability of our approach by applying it to different areas such as Korean-English back-trans literation, English grapheme-phoneme conversion, and Korean morphological analysis.

  • This paper describes a novel power management circuitry for reducing the sleeping mode power dissipation. Based on the proposed power management circuitry, the sensor module can be activated by RF wake-up signal, perform designated process and deactivate itself. There is absolutely no power dissipation at the sleeping mode which takes almost time of the operation. The temperature sensor module using solar cell as energy source has been fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that the sensor module with 3300 ${\mu}$F for storage capacitor can transmits RF temperature data to a receiver at a distance of 20 m every 15 second in a normal indoor light condition and keep the capacitor voltage over 9 V. And the sensor module can operate 100 times with a single charging, that means it is possible for the sensor module to transmit every 5 minute for 8 hours without light or any other power input during the night time.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed parent peer selection method to construct an efficient peer-to-peer(P2P) network topology by considering the capacity of a peer and the hop distance from a data source to the peer. To achieve this goal, we propose a method to combine the two performance metrics to calculate the probability that a peer becomes a parent peer. Using the probability, we propose a method to select a parent peer stochastically by making use of the state information of the neighboring peers that each peer maintains. Through simulation studies, we show that the proposed method drives high capacity peers to support more children peers and makes the diameter of the P2P network shorter than the other methods.

  • This paper aims at investigating the material and dimensions of a wall barrier such as installation depth, thickness, and distance from vibration source by means of finite element method (FEM). In this study, various materials such as concrete, EPS, and steel were adopted. The results showed that the efficiency of a wall barrier appears to be more dependent on installation depth than thickness. In addition, a concrete wall barrier is less efficient than any other wall barrier. In contrast, EPS wall barriers seem to be much sensitive to the wall thickness than the depth.

  • The increased number of smart devices leads users to share multimedia contents with others. Smart device users transmit multimedia files using apps. For multimedia file transfer under NAT (Network Address Translator), a lot of apps exploit a server with public IP or short range communication technologies such as WiFi Direct or Bluetooth because smart devices with private IP address cannot communicate each other directly. We first proposed the push service based file transmission scheme without an additional server and distance limitation. Second, for the push service based transmission, we proposed congestion control scheme to adapt transmission rate to the receiver's link bandwidth. Third, we considered bandwidth aware transmission for senders with different bandwidth. We implemented apps to evaluate the proposed scheme, and conducted experiments with smart devices.

  • Using the Hedonic pricing model using Box-Cox transformation, this paper estimated the marginal effect (implicit price) of odors from landfill in the metropolitan area on housing prices and the willingness to pay for changes in certain odor conditions. This paper utilized the proximity from the landfill in the metropolitan area as a environmental variable, and analyzed the effect of various housing characteristic variables on the sale price of apartments within a radius of 5 km from the landfill. In particular, because odors factor have various heterogeneity, we applied hedonic price models instead of stated-preference methods with various types of functional forms through Box-Cox transformation, considering the heterogeneity of each region. Estimates show that the marginal value (implicit price) for the distance from the odor source was 0.227 to 0.533 depending on the function type of the estimated model. In addition, when other house factors are the same, the marginal willingness to pay for a distance of 1km from the odor source was calculated to be 16.79 to 51.76 thousand dollar depending on the type of function. Finally for the general Box-Cox model, the annual WTP was estimated to be 3,229dollar.

  • Objectives: It is certain that Radioactive iodine thyroid uptake(RAIU) rate should be measured with the standard counts considering the thyroid gland depth in enlarged thyroid patients for the variation from geometric factors. The purpose of this paper is to consider the effects of geometric factors according to detector to source distance and the effective thyroid depth on RAIU rate with experiment test. Materials and Methods: I-131 370 kBq ($10{\mu}Ci$) point source was measured by Captus-3000 thyroid uptake system (Capintec, NJ, USA) with a change Detector-Source Distance from 20 cm to 30 cm at an interval of 1 cm. And we changed the Neck phantom surface-Source Depth in the phantom with 1 cm, 2 cm, 5 cm using the neck phantom in order to reproduce the effective thyroid depth. Results: Every experimental group follows power curve as inverse square curve ($$R2{\geq_-}0.915$$). The average count rates in the case not using a phantom and the every case applied the effective thyroid depth using a phantom was not identical each other. There was significant fluctuations upon the effective thyroid depths applied the effective thyroid depth above 1 cm in $364.4 keV{\pm}10%$ energy ROI (p<0.01). There was not significant difference between the count rates of 1 cm and 2 cm in $364.4keV{\pm}20%$ and $637.1keV{\pm}6.2%$ (p=0.354, p=0.397). In assumed RAIU rate from regression equation, $364.4keV{\pm}20%$ was lower difference than $364.4keV{\pm}10%$ as 6.42% and 5.09% per 1 cm. Every change of count rate upon depth appears decreased line on Linear Regression, but the case of $284.3keV{\pm}10%$ increased only. And also, The graphs of coefficient of variation upon depth increased as straight line on every experimental group. Conclusion: The result appears that application of $364.4keV{\pm}20%$ energy ROI is more suitable for reducing error from the effective thyroid depth. And also, we can estimate the error of 20 cm should be highly reduced than 30 cm for Inverse Square Law. Therefore, If there is not information of the thyroid depth, it is considered that the error from thyroid depth can reduce through set up energy ROIs for $364.4keV{\pm}20%$, and increase Detector-Source Distances.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The laboratory model tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. Two cylindrical containers for the model test were filled with marine clayey soil from the west coast of Korea with a column in the center, one with sand, the other with gravel. Vibrating wire type piezometers were installed at the distance of 1.0D, 1.5D and 2.0D from the center of the column. The characteristics of consolidation were studied with data obtained from the measuring instrument place on the surface of the container. The parameter study was performed on the marine clayey soil before and after the test in order to verify the effectiveness of the improvement. The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.

  • Assistive listening devices (ALDs) refer to various types of amplification equipment designed to improve the communication of individuals with hard of hearing to enhance the accessibility to speech signal when individual hearing instruments are not sufficient. There are many types of ALDs to overcome a triangle of speech to noise ratio (SNR) problems, noise, distance, and reverberation. ALDs vary in their internal electronic mechanisms ranging from simple hard-wire microphone-amplifier units to more sophisticated broadcasting systems. They usually use microphones to capture an audio source and broadcast it wirelessly over a frequency modulation (FM), infra-red, induction loop, or other transmission techniques. The seven types of ALDs are introduced including hardwire devices, FM sound system, infra-red sound system, induction loop system, telephone listening devices, television, and alert/alarm system. Further development of digital wireless technology in hearing instruments will make possible direct communication with ALDs without any accessories in the near future. There are two technology solutions for digital wireless hearing instruments improving SNR and convenience. One is near-field magnetic induction combined with Bluetooth radio frequency (RF) transmission or proprietary RF transmission and the other is proprietary RF transmission alone. Recently launched digital wireless hearing aid applying this new technology can communicate from the hearing instrument to personal computer, phones, Wi-Fi, alert systems, and ALDs via iPhone, iPad, and iPod. However, it comes with its own iOS application offering a range of features but there is no option for Android users as of this moment.
