The objective of this study is to analyze the smoke extraction efficiency using by the partial extraction system with CFD simulation for case of tunnel fire. The Comparison of CFD results with the preceding scaled model test results, it is equal to the smoke extraction efficiency and smoke stratification in tunnel by the partial smoke extraction system (distributed damper). It shows that the smoke extraction efficiency is increased about 7% by the distributed damper which is opened near fire, compare with the distributed damper which is all opened. The case of the fire occurs on a traffic jam in a tunnel, it is proposed that the operating method of partial smoke extraction system for the escaping passengers.

The objective of this study is to analyze the smoke movement and the smoke extraction efficiency using by the partial extraction system for case of tunnel fire. Based on Froude modeling and isothermal model, the 1/20 scaled model tunnel (12m long) was constructed. In the case of the upper critical velocity in the main tunnel, the smoke extraction efficiency shows almost same between group damper and distributed damper. Finally, if the fire occurs on a traffic Jam in a tunnel, it is proposed that the open dampers in partial gallery extract smoke from the main tunnel without jet fan operation. Then, after the passengers have escaped the tunnel, the jet fans work on. On the other hand, If the traffic is uncongested in the tunnel, the jet fans (smoke control system) and partial extraction system (smoke exhaust system) are operated at once in tunnel fire.
Smoke extraction in tunnel fire is investigated experimently with thermal model. The object is a immersed tunnel, of which the partial extraction system exists between the tubes. The model tunnel is measured 12 m long, 0.5 m wide and 0.35 m high. The fire is simulated to pool fire and the size corresponds to full scale fire of 5 MW based on Froude modeling. The performance of partial extraction system is determined under two ventilations, natural and longitudinal ones. The results show that compared with longitudinal ventilation, the smoke extraction efficiency of natural ventilation is increased about 30% because of smoke stratification in tunnel. Also the efficiency is identical to the iso-thermal model. The results will be help for activation of the ventilation system in emergency such as in the event of tunnel fires.
A fire in a subway station platform, completely isolated by screen doors, was numerically simulated to investigate problems in smoke control and find their countermeasures. A part of the platform, $40m{\times}5m$ floor and 3 m high, and a fire of 1 MW were considered, and the smoke extraction system was assumed to start operation at the onset of the fire. For three different values of the exhaust air flow rate, 0.1, 2, and $4m^3/min-m^2$, the distributions of temperature, concentrations of soot and carbon monoxide, and those of visibility were compared. The time-variations of the number of randomly distributed particles in the space were also investigated for the air flow rates to see the efficiency in smoke control. It was shown that smoke control takes time by lack of air supply. It was also confirmed that air supply from the railway to the platform at emergency is needed so that smoke is able to be controlled efficiently, and that opening the doors at the both ends of the platform is desirable until the fire is completely extinguished.
Nicotine is the main component of environmental tobacco smoke, and its presence in indoor air is widely used as a secondhand-smoke indicator. Environmental tobacco smoke is a major source of indoor air pollution, but sufficient investigation of the uncertainty of its measurement, which mirrors the reliability of nicotine measurement, has not been performed. We calculated the uncertainty of measurement of indoor air nicotine concentration at low, medium, and high concentrations of 11.3798, 10.1977, $98.3768{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and we employed the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements (GUM), proposed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The factors considered in determining the uncertainty were uncertainty of the calibration curve (calibration curve and repeated measurements), desorption efficiency, extraction volume, and sampling airflow (accuracy and acceptable limits of flowmeter). The measurement uncertainty was highest at low concentrations; the expanded measurement uncertainty is $0.9435{\mu}g/m^3$ and is represented as a relative uncertainty of 63.38%. At medium and high (concentrations, the relative uncertainty was 13.1% and 9.1%, respectively. The uncertainty of the calibration curve was largest for low indoor nicotine concentrations. To increase reliability of measurement in assessing the effect of secondhand smoke, measures such as increasing the sample injection rate ($1{\mu}L$ or more), increasing sampling volume to increase collected nicotine, and using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or GC/MS/MS, which has a lower quantitation threshold, rather than gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorous detector, should be considered.

An experimental study was carried out on a reduced scale model tunnel to investigate the efficiency of disaster prevention at underground and ground ventilation equipments for the fire in road tunnels. Based on Froude modeling, the 1/50 scaled model tunnel (20 m long) was manufactured. The vertical shafts that are used in the analysis of efficiency of disaster prevention are the two models that had considered when the real tunnels are designed and the amounts of smoke exhaust are applied the miniature of the real tunnels' smoke exhaust, 560 and $280\;m^3/s$. As the result of analysis, it is the possible the emissions of the entire quantity of CO gas through the vertical shafts. In the ground ventilation equipments, the concentration of CO is discharged 2.23~2,73 ppm smaller than the underground ventilation equipments. And the temperature rise in the ground ventilation equipments is $0.53{\sim}0.94^{\circ}C$ lower than in the underground ventilation equipments because of a cooling effect of the surface of the tunnel wall. As a result of analysis of CO concentration and the temperature rise in the modeling ventilation equipment, the position of ground ventilation equipment is more effective than the underground ventilation equipment in disaster prevention measures.
In this study, measurements of size-segregated particulate matter (PM) emitted from the combustion of rice straw, pine needles, and sesame stem were conducted in a laboratory chamber. The collected samples were used to analyze amounts of organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), humic-like substances (HULIS), and ionic species. The light absorption properties of size-resolved water extracts were measured using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. A solid-phase extraction method was first used to separate the size-resolved HULIS fraction, which was then quantified by a total organic carbon analyzer. The results show that regardless of particle cut sizes, the contributions of size-resolved HULIS ($=1.94{\times}HULIS-C$) to PM size fractions ($PM_{0.32}$, $PM_{0.55}$, $PM_{1.0}$, and $PM_{1.8}$) were similar, accounting for 25.2-27.6, 15.2-22.4 and 28.2-28.7% for rice straw, pine needle, and sesame stem smoke samples, respectively. The $PM_{1.8}$ fraction revealed WSOC/OC and HULIS-C/WSOC ratios of 0.51 and 0.60, 0.44 and 0.40, and 0.50 and 0.60 for the rice straw, pine needle, and sesame stem burning emissions, respectively. Strong absorption with decreasing wavelength was found by the water extracts from size-resolved biomass burning aerosols. The absorption ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m $ exponent values of the size-resolved water extracts fitted between 300 and 400 nm wavelengths for particle sizes of $0.32-1.0{\mu}m$ were 6.6-7.7 for the rice straw burning samples, and 7.5-8.0 for the sesame stem burning samples. The average mass absorption efficiencies of size-resolved WSOC and HULIS-C at 365 nm were 1.09 (range: 0.89-1.61) and 1.82 (range: 1.33-2.06) $m^2/g{\cdot}C$ for rice straw smoke aerosols, and 1.13 (range: 0.85-1.52) and 1.83 (range: 1.44-2.05) $m^2/g{\cdot}C$ for sesame stem smoke aerosols, respectively. The light absorption of size-resolved water extracts measured at 365 nm showed strong correlations with WSOC and HULIS-C concentrations ($R^2=0.89-0.93$), indicating significant contribution of HULIS component from biomass burning emissions to the light absorption of ambient aerosols.
