  • Purpose: The purposes were to explore and compare the level of perceived stigma toward physically disabled, and to find factors related with the perceived stigma. Method: Data were collected by structured questionnaire from July to September 2007. The participants consisted of 292 physically disabled and 294 non-disabled living in Daejeon, Korea. These data were analyzed using SPSS Win 12.0 by descriptive statistics, Chi-Square test, t-test, one-way ANOVA. Result: The perceived stigma towards physically disabled of the physically disabled was higher than non-disabled's. The physically disabled stigmatized themselves in all the subcategories of the perceived stigma. The physically disabled perceived the stigma differently according to the spouses, economic status, educational level, comorbidity and impairment sites. The non-disabled's perceived stigma was different according to gender, existence of spouses, job and economic status. Non-disabled's stigma towards physically disabled was not different by experiences related with physically disabled. Conclusion: For reducing the perceived stigma, nursing intervention strategies should be developed, especially for physically disabled, and further studies should be conducted to define related factors. The results of this study might be a standard to evaluate effects of nursing interventions for decreasing the stigma.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the factors affecting rehabilitation of physically disabled persons . Data were collected from 118 physically disabled persons who were registered at facilities for disabled persons by an interview surevey Conducted from October 17 to October 26, 1988. The three facilities for the survey were selected by stratified random sampling. The results were as follows : 1. Using factor analysis, 10 variables were-grouped into 4 factors : physical need, need for social problem-solving, need for social interaction and educational need. The proportion of variance explained by these factors was $58.3\%$. 2. Age, religion and job were significantly related to the functional life scale score, but other variables were not. 3. Family APGAR score and severity of disability were significantly rotated to the functional life scale score. 4. From the multiple regression analysis on rehabilitation of the physically disabled person, the following: three variables were statistically significant : age, severity of disability and family functioning. These results suggest that age, severity of disability and family functioning variables are important factors for rehabilitation of physically disabled persons. Since the family functioning variable can be controlled by care, rehabilitation team should monitor the variable closely to improve the efficiency of rehabilitation. Because of their implication for further study, some variables, other than those considered here, are needed for studying rehabilitation of physically disabled persons.

Methods: This study was secondary data analysis using the National Health check-up database from 2010 to 2013. Among the total 395,627 adults aged 30~80, the physically disabled (n=21,614) and the mentally disabled (n=1,448) who met the diagnosis criteria were extracted and compared with non-disabled (n=372,565) through 1:2 propensity score matching for nine characteristics. Results: Prior to matching, the prevalence of CVD was 34.4% in individuals without disabilities, accounting for 53.8% in those with physical disabilities and 22.4% in those with mental disabilities, showing significant differences between groups (p<.001). After matching, compared to the individuals without disability, those with physically disabled had significantly higher prevalence of CVD and the average number of CVD (p<.001). The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and vascular disease was significantly higher in the physically disabled (p<.05). Drinking was significantly higher in the non-disabled than in the physically and mentally disabled, and smoking was more in the non-disabled than in the mentally disabled. Physical activity was found to be significantly less in both the physically and mentally disabled than in the non-disabled (p<.01). Conclusion: It is necessary to confirm the differences in the prevalence of CVD risk factors and lifestyle according to the type of disability, suggesting the development and verification of health promotion programs including physical activity for CVD prevention in the disabled with CVD risk factors.

This study was performed to investigate the differences of health care utilization by the type of disability. The database was constructed from registry of the disabled and health insurance and medical aid claims data submitted to the Korea Health Insurance Cooperation during in the year 2003. There were huge differences in health care utilization by the type of disability. For the inpatient care, those with a mental disability were more likely to utilize health care services in terms of average visit number of medical facilities and visit days per case, but the treatment amount per case was the highest in physically disabled with organic disease. For the outpatient care, those who the physically disabled with organic disease were more likely to utilize health care services in terms of average visit number of medical facilities, treatment amount per case, and the treatment days per case. Also, those who physically disabled with organic disease were more likely to utilize general hospital for both inpatient and outpatient care, and spent more out-of-pocket expenditure. As the number of persons with disabilities rises, the need to consider new approaches to protecting their health grows increasingly. Especially, Korean health care system should be refined to be more responsive to the needs of the type of disability.
