The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the understandings of elementary pre-service teachers about 'estimation' in the elementary mathematics. Together with this analysis, we identify elementary pre-service teacher's Mathematical Pedagogical Contents Knowledge(MPCK), especially focusing to Subject Matter Knowledge(SMK). In order to this goals, we investigate contents relating to 'estimation' from $1^{st}$ curriculum to 2009 revised curriculum and compare 'rounding up', 'rounding off', 'rounding' in the elementary mathematics textbooks. As results of investigations, 'estimation' has been teaching at the 'Measurement' domain from $3^{rd}$ curriculum, but contexts of measuring weaken from $7^{th}$ curriculum. 'Rounding up(off)' is defined three types in the textbooks from $1^{st}$ to 2009 revised curriculum. And we examine elementary pre-service teachers through the questions on these 'estimation' contents. On the analysis of pre-service teacher's understanding relating MPCK, four themes is summarized as followings; the understanding of '0' in the 'rounding up', the cognitive gap between 'rounding up' and 'rounding off', the difference of percentage of correct answers according to types of question in the 'rounding up', and the difference between the definition of 'rounding up' and the definition of 'rounding'.
The reason for this study is that the learning content of geometric construction in school mathematics is very insufficient. Geometric construction not only enables in-depth understanding of shapes, but also improves deductive proof skills. In school mathematics education, geometric construction is a very important learning factor, and educational significance is very high in that it can develop reasoning skills essential to the future society. Nevertheless, the reduction of geometric construction learning content in Korean curriculum and mathematics textbooks is against the times. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the transition of geometric construction learning contents in middle school mathematics curriculum and mathematics textbooks. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the following studies were conducted. First, we analyze the characteristics of geometric construction according to changes in curriculum and textbooks. Second, we develop a framework for analyzing geometric construction tasks. Third, we explore geometric construction tasks according to the developed framework. Through this, it is expected to provide significant implications for the geometric areas of the new middle school curriculum that will be developed in the future.
Problem solving in math education is of great importance. The interest on problem solving in math education is growing all over the world. Problem solving ability is important throughout the fourth-sixth national curriculum in Korea and this is also necessary in the seventh national curriculum. The writer has implemented a proper model for problem posing and this is also necessary in the seventh national curriculum that emphasizes self-leading for improvement in the classroom. This model has advantages to cultivate a good habit of students who tries to solve the problems with concrete strategies, to take part in the problem solving activity and to change their mathematical attitude.

In Korea mathematics education of middle school has been taken according to the 6th national mathematics curriculum which was renovated by the Ministry of Education announcement in 1992. The eight middle school mathematics textbooks are composed of under this curriculum The education of probability and statistics has been carried out as a part of statistics education centering around middle school's mathematics textbooks.
The concepts of ratio, rate, and proportion are used in everyday life and are also applied to many disciplines such as mathematics and science. Proportional reasoning is known as one of the pivotal ideas in school mathematics because it links elementary ideas to deeper concepts of mathematics and science. However, previous research has shown that it is difficult for students to recognize the proportionality in contextualized situations. The purpose of this study is to understand how the mathematical concept in the middle school mathematics curriculum is connected with ratio, rate, and proportion and to investigate the characteristics of proportional reasoning through analyzing the concept including ratio, rate, and proportion on the middle school mathematics curriculum. This study also examines mathematical concepts (direct proportion, slope, and similarity) presented in a middle school textbook by exploring diverse interpretations among ratio, rate, and proportion and by comparing findings from literature on proportional reasoning. Our textbook analysis indicated that mechanical formal were emphasized in problems connected with ratio, rate, and proportion. Also, there were limited contextualizations of problems and tasks in the textbook so that it might not be enough to develop students' proportional reasoning.
This study investigated school mathematics curriculum of England, newly revised in 1998, focused on the 'shape, space, and measures' domain among three major domains of the English curriculum. On the basis of its understanding, this domain was compared and analyzed with school mathematics curriculum of Korea. In doing so, this study explored its plans and procedures and established a frame of comparison for the curriculums between the two countries. The structure of the National Curriculum in England is composed of programmes of study and attainment targets. The former sets out what should be taught in mathematics at key stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 and provides the basis for planning schemes of work, and the latter sets out the knowledge, skills, and understanding that pupils of different abilities and matures are expected to have by the end of each key stage. Attainment targets are composed of eight levels and an additional level of increasing difficulty. According to the results of the present study, Korea focuses on the formal and systematic mathematical knowledge on the basis of sound understanding of certain mathematical terms or concepts. On the other hand, England curriculum tends to deal with the content which can be understood more intuitively, flexibly, and naturally through the experience and aquisition based on the concrete manipulation. Particularly, it emphasizes that mathematics be realistic and useful in solving a diverse problems confronted in everyday life.
The present study examined the 7th national elementary school mathematics curriculum from a perspective of mathematical creativity. The study investigated to what extent the activities in the Pattern and Function lessons in the national elementary school mathematics textbooks promoted the development of mathematical creativity. The results indicated that the current elementary school mathematics curriculum was limited in many ways to promote the development of mathematical creativity. Regarding the activities in Pattern lessons, for example, most activities presented closed tasks involving finding and extending patterns. The lesson provided little opportunities to explore the relationships among various patterns, apply patterns to different situations, or create ones own patterns. In regard to the Function lessons, the majority of activities were about computing the rate. This showed that the function was taught from an operational perspective, not a relational perspective. It was unlikely that students would develop the basic understanding of function through the activities involving the computing the rate. Further, the lessons had students use exclusively the numbers in representing the function. Students were provided little opportunities to use various representation methods involving pictures or graphs, explore the strengths and limitations of various representation methods, or to choose more effective representation methods in particular contexts. In conclusion, the lesson activities in the current elementary school mathematics textbooks were unlikely to promote the development of mathematical creativity.
This study aims to investigate the extent to which Korean high school textbooks incorporate opportunities for students to engage in the mathematical modeling process through tasks related to exponential and logarithmic functions. The tasks in three textbooks were analyzed based on the actions required for each stage in the mathematical modeling process, which includes identifying essential variables, formulating models, performing operations, interpreting results, and validating the outcomes. The study identified 324 units across the three textbooks, and the reliability coefficient was 0.869, indicating a high level of agreement in the coding process. The analysis revealed that the distribution of tasks requiring engagement in each of the five stages was similar in all three textbooks, reflecting the 2015 revised curriculum and national curriculum system. Among the 324 analyzed tasks, the highest proportion of the units required performing operations found in the mathematical modeling process. The findings suggest a need to include high-quality tasks that allow students to experience the entire process of mathematical modeling and to acknowledge the limitations of textbooks in providing appropriate opportunities for mathematical modeling with a heavy emphasis on performing operations. These results provide implications for the development of mathematical modeling activities and the reconstruction of textbook tasks in school mathematics, emphasizing the need to enhance opportunities for students to engage in mathematical modeling tasks and for teachers to provide support for students in the tasks.

Recently, there are studies the argument that arithmetic rules established by the four fundamental arithmetic operations, in other words, commutative laws, associative laws, distributive laws, should be explicitly described in mathematics textbooks and the curriculum. These rules are currently implicitly presented or omitted from textbooks, but they contain important principles that foster mathematical thinking. This study aims to evaluate the current level of understanding of these computation rules and provide implications for the curriculum and textbook writing. To this end, the correct answer ratio of the five arithmetic rules for 1-4 grades 398 in five elementary schools was investigated and the type of error was analyzed and presented, and the subject to learn these rules and the points to be noted in teaching and learning were also presented. These results will help to clarify the achievement criteria and learning contents of the calculation rules, which were implicitly presented in existing national textbooks, in a new 2022 revised curriculum.
