  • Korean dramas, commonly referred to as Koreanovelas or K-Dramas in the Philippines, have significantly influenced and reshaped Philippine television culture since the early 2000s. Their impact persists in contemporary television programming, reflecting the transnational flow of media texts across borders. As media content transcends geographical boundaries, local media companies have adopted the practice of producing adaptations of foreign television series for their audiences. This paper examines the adaptation of the Koreanovela The World of the Married into the Philippine series The Broken Marriage Vow, both of which are adaptations derived from the British show Doctor Foster. Through this comparative analysis, I argue that the process of localizing these television shows to suit the preferences of the target audience serves as a tangible manifestation of transnational adaptation. Particularly in an era of globalization, where entertainment is still a thriving enterprise, thus traversing international borders, this phenomenon demonstrates the evolving nature of television content as it adapts and caters to diverse cultural contexts let alone a profitable means to generate an ailing entertainment industry, especially in the time of the pandemic.

  • This study focuses on the cultural and economic effects created by long-term TV dramas that run more than 20 years. The result of this study shows that long-lasting TV dramas have significant influence in increasing audience ratings of TV broadcasting companies. An analysis of Fuji Television's "From the Northern Country" shows that the drama's audience rating has more than doubled at the end period in comparison to that at the beginning stage. The analysis shows that long-term dramas also greatly contribute to the improvement of nation's cultural capability including contents development competence by producing media contents related professionals such as actors, actresses and dramatists. Fuji Television picked an actor and an actress for the drama and kept developing their talent and make a cultural accomplishment to produce new talents who compete with performance ability for the Japanese Entertainment Business. In addition, long lasting TV dramas appear to significantly contribute to local economy by promoting tourism industry of the areas where dramas are filmed. By introducing Hurano in Hokkaido which was the main stage of "From the Northern Country" to Japanese people for 21 years, the drama played a decisive role in building Hurano's brand power.

  • In the age of digital culture, TV broadcasting is exercising more influence as a information and communication medium compared to past. With the appearance of satellite broadcasting service in 2002, the broadcasting environment became a diversified field of local TV, cable TV, satellite, internet, etc. and created the time of multi-media and multi-channel. This ongoing change of broadcasting environment made the passive audience of the past, active image makers and new accepters, participants and users of communications, who know how to choose and use media as the active centerpiece, The active acceptor as the centerpiece of channel selections has become the center of the broadcasting, whereby they pick up and enjoy their favorite TV programs and came to remember the list of their favorite channels and zap them finally. In this point of spotting their favorite channels and improving the degree of recognition for the channels, the development of the noticeable brand for a particular program has made a great contribution. The aim of this study, therefore, is to recognize the factors, which are important in the habits of watching TV and to develop professional brands for TV broadcasting programs. The range of the survey for this study was home news programs and broadcasting stations abroad, which were on air from March to May in 2004.
