  • This study discusses the nature of data-interpretation process in the perspective of modern hermeneutics and explores its methodological implications for qualitative research on the life of children. Discussions center around the basic concepts of modern hermeneutics, such as the conceptual distinctions between understanding and explanation, the intersubjective reality constituted between the child's horizon and the researcher's, the concept of the hermeneutics circle and the importance of the openness of language in understanding children's lifeworld. The conclusions are made as follows: First, the concept of "understanding", which is the basic concern of qualitative research on children, has a much different meaning from that of "explanation" in quantitative research. The task of understanding lies in interpreting the lived meaning in context as experienced by children in all its complexity. Second the researcher's subjectivity in the interpretation process has a dual function in that it can produce a faulty hermeneutics circle and yet it provides the researcher with the strong momentum to open up her understanding towards a deeper and wider level. Third, the reliability and the validity of qualitative research should be discussed within the interpretation process itself in that interpretation in qualitative research is guided basically by the researcher's internal dialectic: between data (text) and her subjectivity. Lastly, the language in interpretive research should be open and free in terms of style in order to present a fuller and richer description of children's lifeworld and the delicate textures of their lived meanings.

  • Background: Those classified as Tae-Eum (TE)-type people in Sasang constitutional medicine (SCM) are prone to obesity. Although extensive clinical observations have confirmed this tendency, the underlying physiological mechanisms are unknown. Here, we propose a novel hypothesis using integrative physiology to explain this phenomenon. Methods: Hypoactive lung function in the TE type indicates that respiration is attenuated at the cellular level - specifically, mitochondrial oxygen consumption. Because a functional reduction in cellular energy metabolism is suggestive of intrinsic hypoactivity in the consumption (or production) of metabolic energy, we reasoned that this tendency can readily cause weight gain via an increase in anabolism. Thus, this relationship can be derived from the graph of cellular metabolic power plotted against body weight. We analyzed the clinical data of 548 individuals to test this hypothesis. Results: The statistical analysis revealed that the cellular metabolic rate was lower in TEtype individuals and that their percentage of obesity (body mass index >25) was significantly higher compared to other constitutional groups. Conclusion: Lower cellular metabolic power can be an explanation for the obesity trend in TE type people.

  • Currently, ECDIS and GPS plotters are much used as equipment providing operators with route information, but they do not have any function of automatic route creation and route explanation, so available for only experienced operators. Especially, the present situation is that no study is made of the automatic route creation and route explanation using ENC for ECDIS, substitution system of paper chart. ENC is the electronic navigation chart that is produced using S-52, 5-57 standard format required by IHO. In this paper, an Navigation Guiding System(NGS) is proposed to generate an optimal route where ENC and GPS data is fusioned including the wind direction and speed of an anemometer. The proposed system was testified by a simulation, and its effectiveness was verified.

  • This paper presents an explanation regarding on-line identification of a fuzzy system. The fuzzy system to be identified is assumed to be in the type of singletion consequent parts and be represented by a linear combination of fuzzy basis function (FBF's). For on-line identification, squared-cosine (SCOS) fuzzy basis function is introduced to reduce the number of parameters to be identified and make the system consistent and differentiable. Then the parameters of the fuzzy system are identified on-line by the gradient search method. Finally, a computer simulation is performed to illustrate the validity of the suggested algorithms.

  • Background: The intelligent tissue hypothesis holds that an organ's states (be it normal function or stressed states) are reflected in real time at its related acupuncture points (acupoints), causing physical, real-time changes in the local tissue. The experiment was devised to test this. Methods: The patient drank chilled water while the impedance at 6 stomach-related acupoints was monitored in real time (sample rate of 1 kHz). Any changes in the local tissue at the acupoints ought to be reflected in changes in the impedance. Results: The impedance at every test acupoint showed a response to the chilled water being ingested. Also, the duodenal pacesetter and the stomach's slow waves were clearly visible in the impedance pattern at all the acupoints. Conclusion: Hence, many separate details of the stomach's function were reflected at these acupoints. The duodenal features were consistent with the traditional indications for these acupoints, which are noted to be able to treat intestinal conditions. Therefore, the results were consistent with the hypothesis and also provided a possible explanation for how the use of these acupoints is able to treat intestinal conditions.

  • Purpose: This study was a descriptive survey research to identify the impact of bowel function, anxiety and depression on quality of life in patients with rectal cancer who had a sphincter-preserving resection. Methods: Participants were 100 patients who had rectal cancer surgery at W hospital in Korea. Bowel function, anxiety & depression, and quality of life were measured using the BFI (Bowel Function Instrument), HADS (Hospital Anxiety-Depression Scale) and the FACT-C (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal). Results: The mean scores were $39.81{\pm}5.16$ for bowel function, $6.15{\pm}3.25$ for anxiety, $7.24{\pm}3.13$ for depression, and $72.50{\pm}13.27$ for quality of life. There were significant negative correlations between quality of life and anxiety (r= -.59, p <.001) and between quality of life and depression (r= -.53, p <.001). But the correlation between quality of life and bowel function was significantly positive (r=.22, p =.025). The influence of the independent variables on the total quality of life was examined using multiple regression analysis. Anxiety (${\beta}$= -.38, p =.002), bowel function (${\beta}$= -.25, p =.028) and occupation (${\beta}$=.16, p =.048) were identified as factors affecting quality of life. The explanation power of this regression model was 44% and it was statistically significant (F=16.53, p <.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that in order to improve the bowel function of patients after sphincter-preserving resection for rectal cancer, effective nursing interventions should be developed. As psychological problem such as anxiety and depression can relate to quality of life for these patients, nurses should work on improving the situation by providing continuous emotional nursing.

  • Neural Networks, modeled succinctly from the real nervous system of a living body, can be categorized into two folds; artificial neural network(ANN) and biological neural network(BNN). While the former has been developed to solve practical problems using function approximation capability, pattern classification) clustering algorithm, etc, the latter has been focused on verifying the information processing capability to which brain research gives an impetus, by mimicking real biological systems. However, BNN suffers Iron severe nonlinearities dealt with. A bridge between two neural networks is chaotic neural network(CNN), which simply delineate the real nor-vous system and comprises almost all the ANN structures by selecting parameters. Main research theme of this area is to develop an explanation tool to clarify the information processing mechanism in biological systems and its extension to engineering applications. The CNN has a Gaussian-shaped refractory function with hysteresis effect and the chaotic responses of it have been observed fur a wide range of parameter space. Through the examination of the coupling effects of excitatory and inhibitory connections, the secrets of information processing and memory structure will appear.

  • Various theoretical models have developed io both a family research area and family therapy field on he basis of several family theories and social theories in order to understand the family life and its function. These theoretical models have give rise to provide not only a framework for family therapy bt also opportunities for the development of family studies. Regardless of the devotion of these theoretical models to a family therapy however some family therapy professions have suggested the disvergence between these models and practice because the models tend to confuse therapists in their actual practices Other family therapists on the other hand have claimed the convergence between these models and practice. One of the reasons for the issues of convergence and disvergence in the family therapy study would be that various theoretical models have different sometimes contradicatable definitions and explanations for same concept. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent of similarities and differences among these theoretical models of practice in a way of examining family models to compare Olson's circumplex model to the Beavers systems model. Both models were based on the general systems theory. This paper consists of the explanation of Olson's circumplex model and Beavers systems model in general respectively. Then it will investigate similarities and differences between these two models in terms of the relationship between family functioning and family adaptability.
