  • In this paper, the design and implementation of a high power(300W) forward converter using a planar transformer is presented. The overall size and volume of the converter is decreased by replacing a planar transformer in stead of using a conventional winding transformer. Due to the decreased size and volume, power density of the applied forward converter is increased. Also, in this paper, the 300W ZVS forward converter with active clamp snubber circuit is compared to the 300W hard switching forward converter.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the mechanical properties and damping capacity of thermo-mechanical treated 316L stainless steel. Dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites were formed by thermo-mechanical treatment, and the grain size was changed from micrometer to sub-micrometer by 5-cycled thermo-mechanical treatment. The volume fraction of dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites was increased, and grain size of austenite increased and lengthened by the with increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. In 5-cycled specimens, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite was more than 25% and the less than 5% of volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite was attained. With increasing number of thermo-mechanical treatment, hardness, strength and damping capacity were increased, but elongation was decreased. Damping capacity was increased with increased hardness and strength, but decreased with increased elongation, and this result was the opposite tendency for general metal.

  • For development of a human body model for electric shock, electroconductive paints with carbon black as a filler material were developed. The characteristics of the volume resistivities of thin films fabricated using the electroconductive paints were investigated as a function of the particle sizes and content of carbon black. With a carbon black particle size over $80\;{\mu}m$, agglomeration of carbon black powders was observed. The volume resistivity of the particles increased as the porosity increased and as the amount of carbon black decreased due to the agglomeration of carbon black powders. With a particle size of $4\;{\mu}m$ and $20\;{\mu}m$, agglomeration of carbon black powders was not observed and their porosities were measured as 0.86% and 1.12% with volume resistivities of $20\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and $80\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ respectively. A carbon black particle size of less than $20\;{\mu}m$ is considered to be suitable as a type of electric-shock electroconductive paint for a human body model.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of thermo-mechanical treatment on the tensile properties of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were formed, and grain size was refined by thermo-mechanical treatment. With the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment, volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were increased, and grain size decreased. In 5-cycle number thermo-mechanical treated specimens, more than 10% of the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite and less than 3% of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite were attained. Tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased with the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. Tensile properties of thermo-mechanical treated alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation was affected to formation of martensite by thermo-mechanical treatment, but was large affected to increasing of dislocation and grain refining.

  • This study is to investigate the mechanical properties and the fatigue crack propagation of fire resistance steel for frame structure as the chemical composition was changed by addition of N, B and rolled end temperature was varied. We used two kinds of specimen, the one is parallel and the other is perpendicular to the rolling directions. As rolled end temperature increased, volume fraction of ferrite and pearlite decreased, but volume fraction of baintie and grain size increased. Micro-hardness decreased as rolled end temperature increased, but tensile and yield strength increased. Volume fraction of ferrite and pearlite decreased by addition of N. But volume fraction of bainite, tensile and yield strength increased. Microstructure was changed to martensite by addition of B, and tensile and yield strength increased. Fatigue life of TL direction specimen was shorter than that of LT direction specimen. There was no significant effect to fatigue crack propagation rate by addition of N and changing rolling condition, but fatigue life was increased by addition of B.

  • A hundred and eleven patients of mitral valvular heart disease, who were operated at Seoul National University Hospital, were analysed with echocardiogram before and after operation during the period from November 1979 to February 1982. Twenty-eight patients had mitral stenosis and eighty-three mitral regurgitation. In patients with mitral stenosis, right ventricular end-diastolic volume was in normal range at preoperative and postoperative period. But the left ventricular end-systolic volume was slightly increased preoperatively to 35.4mm and decreased to 33.5mm on immediate postoperative period and 32.5mm after a year later. The left ventricular end-diastolic volume was 50.5mm preoperatively and fell to 46.8mm postoperatively. Ejection fraction was normal preoperatively and postoperatively without changes. Left atrial size fell significantly from 50ram to 37.6mm at the time of late follow-up study. With mitral regurgitation, right ventricular end-diastolic volume was also normal preoperatively and postoperatively. The left ventricular end-systolic volume was increased to 41.9mm and decreased to 31.6mm postoperatively with statistic significance. Left ventricular end-diastolic volume fell from 58.5mm to 45.7mm significantly at the time of late follow-up period. Ejection fraction was also within normal range and had no changes postoperatively. Left atrial size fell from 54.8mm to 45.5mm on a year later [ p value less than 0.01 ]. When atrial fibrillation, the left atrial dimension was increased as 54.9mm compared with 46.8mm of no atrial fibrillation patients.

  • Generated agri-chemical droplets by orchard sprayers are evaporated regenerated and transported along wind streams. The droplets are deposited to targets after changing their sizes, affecting the retention of droplets. An orchard sprayer, designed for spraying grapevines was studied on the spatial distribution of droplet size. The experimental variables were spray direction (0, 22.5, 45, 67.5 and 90˚), distance(2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 m) and fan speed (2,075 and 3,031 rpm). Droplet sizes were converted and analyzed from spray stains, sampled using water sensitive papers. The number median diameter (NMD) increased with an increase of the distance due to disappeared fine droplets (<50 ㎛): however, the volume median diameter (VMD) decreased due to shrunken large droplets (>100 ㎛). Fast fan speed delivered large droplets to 3.5 m, but the spatial distributions of NMD and VMD were not uniform. Slower fan speed decreased the possibility of evaporation and drift; therefore, plenty of droplets were maintained up to 3.0 m. The upward blasting distance was limited within 3 m, but the limit to the ground level was extended to 3.5 m. Concentrated wind and droplets to the ground level should be redistributed to upper canopy direction, leading more uniform deposits. High speed wind and system pressure should be avoided because of generating fine droplets, which would be disappeared and drifted away.

  • The electrochemical properties of electric double layer capacitor(EDLC) was studied by controlling pore size distribution and specific surface area of the activated carbon fiber(ACF). The mesoporous ACF, which was prepared by the iron exchange method, showed the tendency of increasing average pore size and decreasing total surface area. The mesoporous ACF (surface area = 2225 $m^2$/g, pore size=1.93 nm) showed increased mesopore(pore size=1~3nm) volume from 0.055 cc/g to 0.408 cc/g compared to its raw ACF. The charging capacity of the EDLC which uses the prepared mesoporous ACF also increased from 0.39 F/$cm^2$ to 0.55 F/$cm^2$. From these results, it can be known that the electrochemical properties of EDLC are mainly dependent on the specific surface area, but above the surface area 2200 $m^2$/g, it is the mesopore volume that affects the performance of the capacitor considerably. Because the increased mesopore volume results in a decreased ion mobility resistance, the charge capacitance is enhanced.

  • Objectives Standardization of head size is essential for the volume study. Cortical thickness analyses are increasingly being used in many fields of neuroscience. However, it is not established whether head size correction should be done for thickness study. Methods Using the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies data, we determined cortical thickness of 316 cognitively normal participants aged 18-94 with FreeSurfer. The association between head size and cortical thickness of whole cortical mantle and in each lobe among age tertile groups was assessed. Estimated total intracranial volume (eTIV) was calculated for determining head size. Results Across all participants, cortical thickness in whole brain except some areas in cingulate and insula decreased with aging. eTIV had positive correlation with the thickness of frontal, parietal, occipital and whole brain areas. However, the age effect was not shown in whole brain of the first tertile group and in cingulate areas of the third tertile group. eTIV had negative correlation with the thickness of cingulate in the third tertile group. Gender effects were shown in some areas in third tertile group, but it would be due to difference of head size. Conclusions These findings suggest that head size standardization might be done especially in older population and in studies of paralimbic areas.

  • The effect of grain size on the deformation induced martensite transformation and mechanical properties in austenitic stainless steel with high amount of Mn was studied. a'-martensite was formed by deformation and deformation induced martensite was formed with surface relief. With increase of grain size, volume fraction of deformation induced martensite was increased. With the increase in degree of cold rolling, hardness, and tensile strength was rapidly increased with linear relationship, while, elongation was decreased rapidly and then decreased slowly. With increase of grain size, hardness and tensile strength was rapidly increased with linear relationship, while elongation was decreased rapidly. The hardness, tensile strengths, and elongation were more strongly influenced by deformation induced martensite than the grain size.
