In order to increase the learning effect based on the textbooks, the interest inducing factors were derived on the basis of the learning interest, and the textbook design was analyzed by the in - depth interviews and discussions of the expert group. As a result, Graphic elements using bright and soft colors, illustrations of peer groups related to learning contents, and resilient use of sans serifs. However, issues such as lack of proper mixing of photos and illustrations, further development of learning helper characters, configuration of spare margins, graphic image design, and lack of a structured layout that utilizes color and visual images were cited as problems.

  • This study explored the changes in storytelling styles in high school first-year textbooks between the 2007 Revised National Curriculum of Mathematics and the 2015 Revised National Curriculum of Mathematics. The results are indicated as follows. First, the quantitative aspect of storytelling gradually increased in the textbook aligned with the 2015 Revised National Curriculum of Mathematics. Second, as for types of storytelling, the real-life connection and academic convergence types appeared most frequently, followed by mathematical history inquiry types, decision-making types, and tool utilization types. Third, storytelling appeared most frequently in 'main-body' of a lesson in terms of textbook content composition, followed by 'introduction', 'lesson materials', and 'evaluation'. This study implies that more diverse stories need to be developed; including the mathematical history inquiry types, the decision-making types and the tool use types. Textbooks should be organized not that the piecemeal storytelling presented in 'introduction' of a lesson but that a coherent story penetrates the entire unit to be utilized until the end of the lesson.

  • This study investigates factors that influence ESL learners' use/avoidance of English phrasal verbs. It especially focuses on two factors, topic difference and group membership. For the purpose, 60 ESL students who took the University English Proficiency Test (UEPT) were selected, and the 60 essays they wrote for the UEPT were analyzed. All the students were with non-Germanic first language backgrounds. Among the 60 essays, 30 essays were selected from the essays written for the International Students UEPT (IS UEPT), which was required of all new international students. Another 30 essays were selected from the essays written for the Regents' UEPT, which was required of all non-native English speaking undergraduate students as a graduation requirement. Results indicate that the length of residency in the U.S. and/or academic status and semantic complexities of English phrasal verbs but not topic difference nor English proficiency affected the use of English phrasal verbs. The study ends with a discussion of pedagogical implications of the findings.

  • In this study, we sampled science writing tasks and investigated their frequency of use shown in the chemistry domain from two sets of 18 middle school science textbooks developed under the 2007 Revised National Curriculum(RNC) and the 2009 RNC, respectively. In addition, we categorized the sampled science writing tasks depending on the cognitive process and type of writing and compared with the results obtained from analysis of global issues presented in the science writings. From the textbooks developed under the 2007 RNC, a total of 183 science writing tasks were identified in which 10.17 tasks per textbook and 1.32 tasks per 10 pages were used averagely. A total of 168 were identified from the textbooks for the 2009 RNC. Among them, 9.33 tasks per textbook and 1.23 tasks per 10 pages were used on average. Comparing with these results, the average frequency of use of the tasks per textbook and per ten pages were decreased, respectively. Moreover, the number of science writing tasks were found in each curriculum varied considerably depending on the units and the publishers, and that the writing tasks were mainly arranged in the finale, wrapping up stage. In the analysis of science writing tasks according to the cognitive process, the highest and lowest frequency of use were observed in the category of 'understand' and 'remember', respectively. According to the classification of science writing tasks based on the types of writing, the writings for the information delivery were most used and the highest frequency of use was observed in the category of 'understand' of the cognitive process belonging to 'information delivery'. As for the results of the analysis of global issues, the number of science writing tasks including global issues increased from 21(11.48%) in the 2007 RNC to 33(19.64%) in the 2009 RNC. Furthermore, science writing tasks associated with protection of environment showed the highest frequency of use in the both curriculums, and it was analyzed that the materials of global issues used in the 2009 RNC were much more diverse.

Also, the researchers tried to reveal how cognitive development of elementary $4^{th}$ graders and cognitive demand of textbook activities affects the achievement of students. To study students' cognitive development, the researchers use GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Thinking). Piaget's scientific thinking is used to evaluate cognitive demand of textbook activities. With several experts in science education the researchers discussed which scientific thinking is contained in each activities. The results were followed as : (1) The third of activities are significantly affected by students' cognitive development. (2) The another third of activities are influenced by not only students' cognitive development but also other factors experimental instrument. • Under the textbook-driven approach to English education in the Korean selling, the importance of the English textbook can not be overemphasized as the main source of learning materials. Recently, with the development of computer-based language corpora, the recognition of the importance of collocations and the availability of computerized databases of words have caused a resurgence and facilitation in the instruction of collocation. The primary purpose of the present study is to identify the characteristics of lexical collocation and the extent of its use in high school 10th-grade textbooks. From all the analyses, it is revealed that the language materials reflect various constructed collocation in the case of adjective+noun and noun+noun collocations in a natural context. However, verb+noun and adverb+verb collocations are not fully reflected. This is true for delexicalized verbs, and verb and adjective intensifiers. Also the language materials do not provide sufficient support for the lexical syllabus, even though all textbooks may be somewhat adequate in terms of vocabulary size. Finally, based on the analyses of the texts, the suggestions for English collocation instruction are made in the lexical approach.

  • This study intends to confirm if it is effective in improving the problem behaviors by applying "Logical Consequence" suggested by Adler to the class management. The researcher who is in charge of the 4th grade class of elementary school in G city applied Adlerian logical consequence to her children, observed and examined the effectiveness of reducing the problem behaviors by the qualitative study method of in-depth interview from March to October. The problem behaviors treated in this study includes irrelevant remarks and gossip in school time, no preparation for taking lessons in time, no preparation of a textbook and a supply, no involvement in doing homework, scribbling and poor handwriting on a textbook, teasing a friend (abusive language, joking, violence), indoor running, no involvement in doing a task, being late and no arrangement of indoor shoes. In conclusion, this study indicated that the use of Logical Consequence was relatively effective in improving the problem behaviors and more effective in individual behaviors rather than group's behaviors. While the problem behaviors conducted in a class in the daily routine were effective at the point of the occurred problems, the problem behaviors occurred at the point of time related to a home or the finish of daily routine were ineffective.
