  • In materials with the large grain size, ultrasonic waves are highly attenuated by the grain boundary acting as scattering centers due to discontinuity of elastic constant. In this study, the improved probes were developed so that they minimized the effect of grain scattering in order to detect deep flaws in coarse grained materials. As the result, the developed ultrasonic transducers showed the better sensitivity and signal to noise ratio when compared with the commercial probes in testing the interior of coarse grained material.

  • The study was designed to evaluate the significant roles of SSRI in rat of depression model. Chronic exposure to mild unpredictable stress has been found to depress the consumption of sweet 1% sucrose solutions in the Sprague-Dawley rats. We applied the variety of 11 types of stress regimens and identified depressive behaviours(developed by Willner) in 70 Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats in experiments were stratified into 6 groups, ie ; 3 kinds of SSRI(paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline), clomipramine, choline and saline control. Memory function was evaluated by passive avoidance learning and retention test. The authors determined how long memory retention would remain improved with 24 hour, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks at training-testing interval in depressive states of the Sprague-Dawley rats. The results were as follows ; 1) There were no significant differences between the 6 groups at the 24 hour training-testing interval. 2) The paroxetine treated group showed significant differences from the control group at the 1 week and 2 weeks training-testing interval. 3) The paroxetine and the fluoxetine treated groups showed singificant differences from the control group at 3 week training-testing interval. 4) The paroxetine and the choline treated groups showed significant differences from the control group at 4 week training-testing interval. In summary, paroxetine had an effect on long term memory processing from 1st week to 4th week. Also, fluoxetine(at 3rd week) and choline(at 4th week) had effect on long term memory processing. Sertraline, clomipramine were ineffective on memory processing during 4 weeks observation. Possible explanations why paroxetine had early effect on memory processing than the other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are rapid bioavailability, which is the characteristics of pharmacokinetics of paroxetine. In clinical situation, author carefully suggest that SSRI would be beneficial to improve the memory function caused by depressive neurochemical changes.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is main factors (environmental conditions, pattern spacing, pattern material) that effect the ion-migration of PCB. Methods: Recently, the electronic components are becoming more high density of electronic device, so that electronic circuits have smaller pitches between the patten and more vulnerable to insulation failure. so the reliability of electric insulation of device has become an ever important issue as device contact pitches of pattern. Usually, ion-migration occurs in high temperature and high humidity environment as voltage is applied to the circuit. Under high temperature and high humidity, voltage applied electronic components respond to applied voltages by metals's electrochemical ionization and a conducting filament forms between the anode and cathode across a nonmetallic medium. This leads to short-circuit failure of the electronic component. Results: we studied ion-migration that occurs in accordance with the main factors (environmental conditions, pitches, pattern material). The PCB pattern material was made by two different types of material (free solder, OSP) for this research and pitches of pattern is 0.15mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm. PCB was experimented in the environmental conditions (high temperature $120^{\circ}C$, high temperature and high humidity $85^{\circ}C$, 85%RH) and was analyzed for ion-migration through the experiment results. Conclusion: We confirmed that environmental condition, pitches of pattern, pattern material had effect on ion-migration of PCB.

  • The toxicity test of ammonium persulfate was conducted to ensure of its potential toxic effects according to the single-dose acute oral toxicity study (OECD Guideline 423) and 90-day repeated dose sub-chronic oral toxicity study guideline (OECD Guideline 408) for establishing national chemical management system, and matching in the Globally Harmonized Classification System (GHS) category. In acute oral toxicity study, pasty stool, perineal contamination and temporary body weight decrease were observed after dosing 1st and 2nd challenge (300 mg/kg body weight). All test animals were dead within 6 hours after dosing at 3rd challenge (2000 mg/kg body weight). Therefore, the GHS class of test substance is considered class 4. In sub-chronic toxicity study, body weight changes, food consumptions, hematological, biochemical and pathological examination did not show any noticeable and significant differences between the administered (5, 20, 80 mg/kg body weight) and control (vehicle only) group animals. Based on these results, the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) is considered above 80 mg/kg body weight.

  • This study is to investigate whether young Korean children have understanding for testing hypothesis. Questions explored are; First, do children have notions of testing hypothesis? Or, do they just produce an effect? Second, choosing between conflicting hypotheses, can children distinguish between experiments that would produce conclusive and inconclusive evidence? For this study, 15 first grade and 15 second grade children in elementary school located in Kyunggi area near Seoul participated. Data collection and analysis were based on interviews with children for two weeks. Children were presented two conflicted hypotheses to decide which one is correct through conclusive evidence and inconclusive evidence in the interview. The results showed that children(1st: 93.3%, 2nd: 81.3%) of each grade can distinguish between hypothesis and evidence to do testing hypothesis, and distinguish between conclusive and inconclusive evidence. In conclusion, most young children have understanding of testing hypothesis based on their familiar experiences, so it was possible for them to differentiate hypothesis from evidence in certain situations.

  • Since the late 1990's, FAA, NASA and the aerospace industry have worked together to develop the sharing system of the composite material qualification databases which were obtained through the standardized fabrication and testing procedures. The result was what is now known as the AGATE(Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments) or NCAMP(National Center for Advanced Materials Performance) methodology, a more cost-effective concept that shifts the major responsibility for qualification and testing from the aircraft manufacturer to the material supplier. The properties of composite materials are largely dependent on the testing as well as the raw material properties and the manufacturing process including the process control parameters. Thus it is important in the composite material qualification to comply with the standardized testing procedures. In this paper, I will describe the standardized witness methodologies of certification engineers to reduce the effect of testing variability within the qualification data.

  • Non-contact modal testing for longitudinal modes of a pipe is discussed in this work. The suggested method can generate and measure longitudinal vibrations without mechanical contact by using the coupling phenomenon between deformation and magnetic field, known as the magnetostrictive effect. This effect has been used to generate and measure ultrasonic waves, but seldom used to deal with audible vibrations. In this investigation, the validity of the developed method in a typical vibration frequency range is checked with an Inconel pipe being used in nuclear power plants.
