PURPOSES : This study is to evaluate ASR(alkali silica reactivity) resistance of ternary blended binder adding ultra fine mineral admixture. METHODS : This study analyzes ASR expansion using ASTM C 1260 and 1567. RESULTS : This study showed that the fineness of mineral admixture had no effect on ASR expansion. The expansion of ternary blended binder(UFFA 20%+FGGBS 10%) were below 0.1%, and this binder met the ASR standard. Also when adding the CSA expansion agent, ASR expansion slightly decreased. The expansion of latex modified mixture increased by 80% comparing plain mixture. CONCLUSIONS : Ternary blended binder met the ASR standard, and this binder is available in concrete bridge deck overlay.
Autogenous healing of concrete can be helpful in structural maintenance by healing cracks using a healing material created by the precipitation of calcite and by the hydration of unhydrated binder around the cracks. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the physicochemical properties and autogenous healing performance of ternary blended binder composed of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), blast furnace slag (BFS), and calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) clinker. Ternary blended binders with various contents of OPC-BFS-CSA clinker were prepared, and their physicochemical properties and autogenous healing performances were examined using various analytical techniques and visually observed using a microscope. The obtained results indicated that increase in the BFS content accompanied the increased the amount of unreacted BFS even after 28 days of curing and had a positive effect on the autogenous healing performance due to its latent hydration. However, replacing the CSA clinker did not increase the autogenous healing performance owing to an insufficient sulfate source for the formation of ettringite. The main precipitates around the cracks were calcite, C-S-H. Other hydration products such as portlandite, monosulfate, and ettringite, which were not found in the Raman and scanning electron microscope analyses.

To improve the problem of strength reduction of unary and binary blended non-cement concrete that occur at room temperature, comparative analysis was conducted based on the slump and compressive strength properties of ternary blended non-cement concrete in which cement was replaced with silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag, and the following conclusions were drawn. The ternary blended non-cement concrete showed higher compressive strength than binary binder concrete, and the slump reduction was less when 10% silica fume was mixed. In addition, the appropriate composition ratio range of each by-product was suggested according to slump and compressive strength level based on ternary diagram.
Mineral admixtures are used to improve the quality of concrete and to develop sustainability of concrete structures. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), such as silica fume (SF), granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and pulverized fly ash (PFA), are gradually recognized as useful mineral admixture for producing high performance concrete. The study on ternary blended concrete utilizing mainly three major mineral admixtures is limited and the study on durability and chloride induced corrosion resistance of ternary blended concrete is very few. This study examines the durability characteristics of the ternary blended concrete composed of different amount of the SCM with ordinary Portland concrete and the study experimentally focuses on corrosion resistance evaluation of ternary blended concrete subjected to chloride attack. In this study, 50% replacement ratio of mineral admixture to OPC was used, while series of combination of $20{\sim}40%$ GGBS, $5{\sim}15%$ SF and $10{\sim}45%$ PFA binder were used for chloride corrosion resistance test. This study concerned the durability properties of the ternary blended concrete including the corrosion resistance, chloride binding, chloride transport and acid neutralization capacity. It was found that the ternary blended concrete utilizing the SCM densified the pore structures to lower the rate of chloride transport. Also, increased chloride binding and buffering to acid were observed for the ternary blended concrete with chlorides in cast.

The present study investigates the chemical reaction and performance of ternary blended binders by mixing ferronickel slag. Cement was replaced using ground granulated blast furnace slag and ferronickel slag, combined up to 50% of the replacement rate. The blended cements were tested by setting times, length change, compressive strength at 1, 3, 7, 28 days. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope were conducted for detecting hydration products while the MIP and microhydation heat were used for examining morphological characteristics. The results showed that by adding ferronickel slag, Pozzolanic reaction occurred, forming a dense pore structure and the effect of reducing hydration heat and dry shrinkage was also found. The compressive strength at 28 days was lower than that of 100% OPC control specimen (OSP0), but ternary blended cements showed no significant difference compared to binary blended (OSP50). If the optimal mix is derived later and used for the purpose, the potential for use as a cement binder is expected.
Recently, concrete using multicomponent blended cement has been required to increase the freeze-thaw and sulfate resistances of concrete structures exposed to a marine environment. Thus, the purpose of this study was to propose the use of concrete containing multicomponent blended cement as one of the alternatives for concrete structures exposed to a marine environment. For this purpose, batches of concrete containing ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (OPC-G, G: ground granulated blast slag), ternary blended cement (OPC-GF, F: fly ash), and quaternary blended cement (OPC-GFM, M: mata-kaolin) were made using a water-binder ratio of 50%. Then, the durability levels, including thesulfate and freeze-thaw resistances, were estimated for concrete samples containing OPC, OPC-G, OPC-GF, and OPC-GFM. It was observed from the tests that the durability levels of the concrete samples containing OPC-G and OPC-GF were found to be much better than that of the concrete containing OPC. The optimum mixing proportions were a40% replacement ratio of ground granulated blast slag for the binary blended cement and a30% replacement ratio of ground granulated blast slag and 10% fly ash for the ternary blended cement.

Presently, mass concrete structures are being built in federal and private projects of civil infrastructures and building structures. The hydration heat of mass concrete structures is the most important factor in the quality of concrete matrix and construction period. Moreover, internal cracks caused by hydration heat degrades durability, water tightness, and strength of concrete. To reduce hydration heat, it is necessary to blend belite cement (${\beta}-C_2S$) with industrial by-products (i.e. granulated slag and fly ash). In this experiment, 14 levels of binary binders and 4 levels of ternary binders were used to understand the effect of different replacement ratio on hydration heat, strength and microstructure (i.e. SEM and XRD) of mortar. Cumulative hydration heat at 28 days for the binary and ternary binders was affected by replacement ratio of fly ash and/or granulated slag. As fly ash content increased, hydration heat decreased. As granulated slag content increased, reduction rate of the hydration heat was lower than when fly ash was used. Especially, the hydration heat of ternary binder blended with 40% flyash and 30% granulated slag showed about 50% of hydration heat from using belite cement (P). The study results showed that the temperature rise of concrete matrix can be decreased by using blended belite binders producing low hydration heat and reasonable strength.

The results presented in this paper form part of an investigation into the optimization of a ternary blended cementitious system based on ordinary Portland cement (OPC)/blast furnace slag(BFS)/fly ash(FA) for the development of ultra high strength concrete. Concrete covering a wide range of BFS/FA blending proportions were investigated. Compressive strength at the ages of 3, 7 and 28 days for concrete specimens containing 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%FA along with 0%, 30%, 40% and 50%BFS as partial cement replacement at a water-binder ratio of 0.18 were investigated. Tests on porosity and pore size distribution were conducted using mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results show that the combination of FA10 and BFS30 can improve both short- and long-term properties of concrete as results of reducing of pores larger than 50nm.

This research presents the results of the strength and drying shrinkage properties to study the effect of ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS), fly ash(FA) and calcium sulfoaluminate(CSA) for activated ternary blended slag cement. The activated ternary blended cement(ATBC) mortar were prepared having a constant water-cementitious materials ratios of 0.4. The GGBFS contents ratios of 100%, 80%, 70% and 60%, FA replacement ratios of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%, CSA ratios of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% were designed. The superplasticizer of polycarboxylate type were used. The activator was used of 10% sodium hydroxide(NaOH) + 10% sodium silicate($Na_2SiO_3$) by weight of binder. Test were conducted for mini slump, setting time, V-funnel, water absorption, compressive strength and drying shrinkage. According to the experimental results, the contents of superplasticizer, V-funnel and compressive strength increases with an increase in CSA contents for all mixtures. Moreover, the setting time, water absorption ratios and drying shrinkage ratio decrease with and increase in CSA. One of the major reason for the increase of strength and decrease of drying shrinkage is the accelerated reactivity of GGBFS with alkali activator and CSA. The CSA contents is the main parameter to explain the strength development and decreased drying shrinkage in the ATBC.

An objective of this experimental research is to investigate the diffusion characteristics for chloride ion of concrete subjected to sulfate attack. For this purpose, concretes with three types of cement such as ordinary portland cement(OPC), binary blended cement(BBC), and ternary blended cement(TBC) containing mineral admixtures were made for water-binder ratios of 32% and 43%. The concrete specimens were immersed in sulfate solution for 365 days, and then the resistance against chloride ion penetration of them were estimated by using NT BUILD 492. It was observed from the test results that the resistance to chloride ion penetration of concrete subjected to sulfate attack was greatly decreased than that of standard curing concrete under the same age.
