  • Semiempirical MO calculations are applied to estimate the substituent effects on acylations of the nonfused N-vinyl-2-amino $\beta-lactams$ having frameworks analogous to 3-cephems. The stabilization energy for the reaction intermediate of the nucleophilic attack by the hydroxide ion is selected as the reactivity index and calculated by AM1 and PM3 methods for the model $\beta-lactams$ with substituents at the C1 and N-vinyl terminal positions. The reactivities are larger for -SH connected to the C1 and strong $\pi-acceptors$ at the N-vinyl terminal implying the large reactivity for known active cephalosporins. Quantum chemical calculation of stabilization energy could be useful in correlating antibiotic activities of many compounds obtained as derivatives of a lead compound.

  • Two series of symmetric dimesogenic compounds containing a butylene or 1-methylbutylene spacer as a flexible group were synthesized. The mesogenic groups of synthesized compounds consist of an azobenzene group with a terminal substituent. Chemical structures as well as, thermal, mesomorphic, and photochemical properties of the synthesized compounds were investigated using FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and UV-visible spectrometry. P-H, P-F, and $P-OC_6H_{13}$ showed monotropic liquid crystal phases, whereas the others showed enantiotropic liquid crystal phases. Compounds with butylene group as a flexible spacer exhibited wider mesophase temperature ranges and higher thermal transition temperatures than compounds containing a 1-methylbutylene group. Compounds with a high absolute value of the Hammett substituent constant exhibited high thermal transition temperatures and improved stability in the liquid crystal phase. Furthermore, in the absence or presence of UV light illumination, terminal substituents of the azomesogenic group were important factors in deciding the maximum absorbance wavelength (${\lambda}_{max}$) and the rate of photoisomerization (K).

  • A series of new dimesogenic compounds whose mesogens are of aromatic ester or amide type having a trifluoromethyl $(CF_3)$ substituent at the para-position of each terminal phenolic rings were prepared and their liquid crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and on a cross-polarizing microscope. The compounds have two identical mesogenic units bracketing a central decamethylene spacer. Trifluoromethyl group appears to favor the formation of smectic phases when it is attached to a phenoxy or anilide terminal. Its group efficiency for mesophase formation seems to be inferior to other common substituents. A thermodynamic analysis of the phase transitions was made and the results were explained in relation to the structures of the compounds.

  • The catalytic oxidations of several cycloolefins in $CH_2Cl_2$ were been investigated using Mn(III)-, Fe(III)-porphyrin complexes as a catalyst and sodium hypochlorite as a terminal oxidant. Porphyrins were $(p-CH_3O)TTP,\;(p-CH_3)TTP,$ TPP, (p-F)TPP, (p-Cl)TPP and $(F_{20})TPP$ (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin), and olefins were cyclopentene, cyclohexene and cycloheptene. The substrate conversion yield was discussed according to the substituent effects of metalloporphyrin. The conversion yield of substrate by changing the substituent of TPP increased in the order of $p-CH_3O$ < $p-CH_3$ < H < p-F < p-Cl, which was consistent with the sequence of $4{\sigma}$ values of TPP. The conversion of cycloalkene followed the order of $C_5\;<\;C_6\;<\;C_7$.

  • Four aminoazobenzene disperse dyes derived from different N-ethyl-N-substitutedalkylanilines and 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline, were synthesized and their chemical structure were analyzed by 500 MHz NMR spectroscopy. The wavelength of maximum absorption of the synthesized dyes, which was dependent on the electron withdrawing ability of the substituent, was in the range of 499.5~526.0nm. As terminal substituent became polar, the dyeing rate of disperse dye increased, and the exhaustion rate of dyes having cyano or hydroxy group became lower, that of the dye having acetoxy group higher. The wash fastness of polyester fabric dyed with disperse dyes possessing the polar group improved probably due to the increased dye-fiber interaction.

  • We examined the effect of p-substituents in p-substituted cinnamyl methyl ethers and 1-(p-substituted phenyl)allyl methyl ethers with CSI, and confirmed that the CSI reaction of allyl ethers (p-substituted ethers) is a competitive reaction of $S_Ni{\;}and{\;}S_N1$ mechanism according to the stability of the carbocation. And, the only terminal allylic amine was obtained through the migration reaction in thermodynamic reaction condition.

  • The catalytic hydroxylation of several cycloalkanes in dichloromethane have been investigated using In(Ⅲ)-, Tl(Ⅲ)-porphyrin complexes as a catalyst and NaClO, $NaClO_{2}$, $H_{2}O_{2}$ as a terminal oxidant. Porphyrins were TPP and ($F_{20}$)TPP (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin) and substrates were cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cycloheptane and cyclooctane. The substrate conversion yield was discussed according to the substituent effect and hinderance effect of metalloporphyrin and the radius effect of non-redox metal ion. The conversion yield of cycloalkane followed the order of $ C_{5} $ < $ C_{6}$ < $ C_{7}$ = $ C_{8}$. In this experimental condition $NaClO_2$ was rather efficient terminal oxidant than NaClO and $H_{2}O_{2}$.

  • DFT calculations have been performed on several substituted 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes (1,4-DABs) with electron donating and withdrawing groups at the terminal two nitrogens to investigate the reactivity of Diels-Alder reaction with acrolein. The calculated FMO (Frontier Molecular Orbital) energies for the optimized 1,4-disubstituted-1,4-DABs have been used to explain both normal and inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reactions. It is shown that the electron donating and withdrawing substituents lead to the normal(HOMO diene controlled) and inverse electron demand (LUMO diene controlled) Diels-Alder reactions, respectively.

  • In order to predict substituent and Lewis acid effects on the regiospecificity of the Diels-Alder reaction, and to investigate the competition for the complexation of Lewis acid between diene and dienophile, frontier orbital theory has been applied to thermal and catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction by means of CNDO/2 MO method. It has been found that: (1) Lewis acid coordinated preferentially with diene rather than dienophile when carbonyl oxygen of acetoxy substituted diene had larger negative atomic charges than that of dienophile. (2) Most of the reaction were neutral electron demand type, and hence 4-C, 2-C and quantitative secondary orbital interacion methods were generally in good accord with experiments. (3) Sulfur activated the adjacent terminal carbon atom greatly to increase diene LUMO-dienophile HOMO interaction through vacant-d-orbital participation, and played an important role in controlling regioselectivity of neutral electron demand reaction type.
