The objective of the study was to obtain the compressive the tensile and the fleniril strengthes, thermal resistance, chemical resistance and fire resistance of the reclaimed plastic corcrete in order to investigate the feasibility as a new construction material This reclaimed plastic concrete is a compositive material which is composed of sand and blend of 50% of LDPE(Low density polyethylene) and 50% of HDPE (High density polyethylene) which are inexpensive and easy to reclaim. The results obtained in the study are summarized as follows: 1. As the binder content ranging from 20 to 40 % increase, the compresie, the splitting tensile and the flexural strengthes were increased. The compressive strenzth of the specimen tested was the highest and flexural strength the next and tensile strength the lowest 2. The compressive, the tensile and flexural strengthes of specimens made of fine sand were higher than those of coarse sand. The compressive, the tensile and the flexural strengthes of specimens made of high pressure molding were higher than those of low pressure molding. 3.In comparison with different additives, the specimens with carbon black was excellent and B. H. T. good and ferric oxide poor for thermal resistance. 4. In relationship between the flexural strength with varying temperature from -23$^{\circ}C$ to 80$^{\circ}C$. The flexural strengthes were decreared as temperature increased at 25 %, 30 % and 35 % of binder contents, respectively. Especially at 60$^{\circ}C$, the flexural strength was significantly decreased. 5. The decrement of flexural strengthes and the weight losses after 7 days immersion in acid or alkali solutions were not significant. 6. Fire resistance of the reclaimed plastic concrete was not significantly influenced by the contents of sand. However, the fire resistance of the reclaimed plastic concrete was depend upon melting and ignition properties of the binder itself. Therefore. a proper selection of the binder and the fire retardant are recommended in arder to improve fire resistance of the reclaimed plastic concrete.
In this study, submerged arc cladded Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo-CuWNbV-C stainless steels containing various Cr contents between 11.2 wt.% and 16.7 wt.% were prepared with fixed C content at about 0.14 wt.%. Using these alloys, changes in microstructure, tensile property, and thermal fatigue property were investigated. Phase fraction of delta-ferrite was increased gradually with increasing Cr content. However, tensile strength, hardness, and thermal fatigue resistance appeared to be decreased. When the microstructure of delta-ferrite was observed, it was revealed that the mesh structure retained up to about 15% Cr content. Although thermal fatigue resistance was almost the same for Cr contents between 11.0 and 14.5 wt.%, it was significantly decreased at higher Cr contents. This was evident from mean value of crack lengths of 10 largest ones. Evaluation of thermal fatigue resistance on alloys with various Cr contents revealed the following important results. First, the reproducibility of ranking test was excellent regardless of the number of cycles. Second, thermal fatigue resistance was increased in proportion to true tensile fracture strength values of overlay materials. Finally, the number of thermal fatigue cracks per unit length was increased with increasing true tensile fracture strength.
Hydrolysis resistance and mechanical property changes of polyketone (POK)/glass fiber (GF) composites were investigated for GF concentrations varying between 30 and 50%. The hydrolysis resistance of GF filled POK and polyamide66 (PA66, hydrolysis resistant grade) composites were compared. As shown by the experimental results, increasing the immersion time of the composites in a monoethylene glycol (MEG)/water solution at $120^{\circ}C$ had no impact or resulted in slightly decreased mechanical properties such as the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and strain at break in case of POK composites, whereas the mechanical properties of PA66 composites showed a significant drop. Increasing GF concentrations increased the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of POK composites; however, impact strength did not show significant changes. Hydrolysis mechanisms of POK and PA66 are discussed.
In this study, an ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) was used to improve the mechanical properties, scratch resistance and tribological performance of Cu-based bimetals, which are usually used to manufacture sliding bearings and bushings for internal combustion engines (ICEs). Two different Cu-based bimetals, namely CuPb10Sn10 and CuSn10Bi7, were sintered onto a low carbon steel substrate. The mechanical properties and dry tribological performance using a tensile tester and micro-tribo tester were evaluated, respectively. The scratch resistance was assessed using a micro-scratch tester at an incremental load. The tensile test results showed that the yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of both Cu-based bimetals increased after UNSM. Furthermore, the scratch and tribological tests results revealed that the scratch resistance and tribological performance of both Cu-based bimetals were improved by the application of UNSM. These improvements were mainly attributed to the eliminated pores, increased hardness and reduced roughness after UNSM. CuSn10Bi7 demonstrated better mechanical properties, scratch resistance and tribological performance than CuPb10Sn10. It was found that the presence of Bi in CuSn10Bi7 formed a Cu11Bi7 intermetallic phase, which is harder than Cu3Sn. Hence, CuSn10Bi7 demonstrated higher strength and wear resistance than CuPb10Sn10. In addition, a CuSn10Bi7 formed both SnO2 and Bi2O3 that prevented adhesion and improved the tribological performance. It can be expected that under dry tribological conditions, ICEs can utilize UNSM bearings and bushings made of CuSn10Bi7 instead of CuPb10Sn10 under oil-lubricated conditions.
The main objective of this study is to improve abrasion resistance and wet slip resistance of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) by blending with ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) or polybutadiene rubber (BR) for the application of the footwear outsole materials. With addition of 10 wt% of EPDM or BR, TPU/EPDM and TPU/BR blends exhibited higher NBS abrasion resistance, tensile properties and wet slip resistance than TPU. However, with further increasing content of EPDM and BR, abrasion resistance and tensile properties of the blends decreased. Improvement in abrasion resistance and tensile properties with 10 wt% of addition of EPDM or BR may be due to better microphase separation of TPU.
For the various RP processes and machines, quantitative comparisons were carried out, which include the variations of roughness according to inclined angle of surface, tensile strength and heat-resistance, shape accuracy affected by curl distortion, manufacturability of submilli-scale structure, and manufacturing speed. It was observed that steeper surface results in smoother roughness except Eden500V of Objet. Specimen made by LOM process showed the best heat-resistance, but that of SL process had heat-resistance only up to $60^{\circ}C$. Generally, tensile strength in the building direction was shown to be smaller than in the scanning direction, but SL process showed the opposite results. RM6000II of CMET was superior in the manufacturing small-scale structure below 0.2mm, and Z510 of Zcorp. and ViperPRO of 3D systems were great in manufacturing speed.
The uniformly dispersed Aramid and Poly (phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) in a variety of rubber was investigated. The mechanical properties of rubber were characterized by hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, heat resistance, oil resistance, cold resistance, ozone resistance measurements. The 3mm Aramid chopped fiber better tensile strength than the other Chopped fiber. The Aramid of 3mm chopped fiber showed excellent reinforcing in rubber composite because of homogeneous dispersion. Consequently, the best 3mm Aramid chopped fiber and rubber improved the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite. Also, 3mm Aramid chopped fiber improved the oil-resistant, ozone resistant and cold resistant.
Novoloid fibers have high chemical, flame and thermal resistance; however they have low tensile properties. Effects of gamma irradiation on the tensile properties of novoloid fibers have been investigated. Loop and knot resistance have also been examined. Maximum tenacity of the single fiber increased with an increase of the radiation dose applied. According to the loop and knot tenacity results it is found that brittleness has been also affected by the amount of radiation dose.
A new type of composite insulated concrete sandwich wall (ICS-wall), which is composed of a triangle truss steel wire network, an insulating layer, and internal and external concrete layers, is proposed. To study the mechanical properties of this new ICS-wall, tensile, compression, and shearing tests were performed on 22 specimens and tensile strength and corrosion resistance tests on 6 triangle truss joints. The variables in these tests mainly include the insulating plate material, the thickness of the insulating plate, the vertical distance of the triangle truss framework, the triangle truss layout, and the connecting mode between the triangle truss and wall and the material of the triangle truss. Moreover, the failure mode, mechanical properties, and bearing capacity of the wall under tensile, shearing, and compression conditions were analyzed. Research results demonstrate that the concrete and insulating layer of the ICS-wall are pulling out, which is the main failure mode under tensile conditions. The ICS-wall, which uses a graphite polystyrene plate as the insulating layer, shows better tensile properties than the wall with an ordinary polystyrene plate. The tensile strength and bearing capacity of the wall can be improved effectively by strengthening the triangle truss connection and shortening the vertical distances of the triangle truss. The compression capacity of the wall is mainly determined by the compression capacity of concrete, and the bonding strength between the wall and the insulating plate is the main influencing factor of the shearing capacity of the wall. According to the tensile strength and corrosion resistance tests of Austenitic stainless steel, the bearing capacity of the triangle truss does not decrease after corrosion, indicating good corrosion resistance.
The risk of progressive collapse in steel framed buildings under fire conditions is gradually rising due to the increasing use of combustible materials. The fire resistance of such steel framed buildings is evaluated by fire tests. Recently, the application of performance based fire engineering makes it easier to evaluate the fire resistance owing to various engineering techniques and fire science. The fire resistance of steel structural members can be evaluated by the comparison of the limiting temperatures and maximum temperatures of structural steel members. The limiting temperature is derived at the moment that the failure of structural member results from the rise in temperature and the maximum temperature is calculated by using a heat transfer analysis. To obtain the limiting temperatures for structural steel of grades SS400 and SM490 in Korea, tensile strength tests of coupons at high temperature were conducted. The limiting temperatures obtained by the tensile coupon tests were compared with the limiting temperatures reported in the literature and the results of column fire tests under four types of loading with different load ratios. Simple limiting temperature formulas for SS400 and SM490 steel based on the fire tests of the tensile coupons are proposed. The limiting temperature predictions using the proposed formulas were proven to be conservative in comparison with those obtained from H-section and hollow section column fire tests.
