To evaluate the mechanical properties of in-service materials, tensile properties measurement using small-scaled specimen has been carried out. Tensile testing specimens with various dimensions, including standard and sub-size specimen specified in ASTM and ISO and small-scaled specimen, were prepared. Tensile strain in small-scaled specimen was measured using micro-ESPI system set up in this study. This system was used in the specimen with the parallel length of 2 mm and in subsequently measuring the strain under tensile loading. From each type of tensile specimen, stress-strain curves were determined. The dimension effect of the tensile properties was investigated comparing the tensile results obtained from standard specimens and small-scaled specimens. It was shown that the tensile strength for the small-scaled specimen is lower by 15% than those for the standard specimen.
The release of residual stress by mechanical loading and unloading is often performed in the fabrication of box structure fur steel bridge. The proper degree of loading and unloading is significant at release method of residual stress by mechanical loading because that degree is changed by material and geometric shape of welded structure. Therefore, the simulation model that could exactly analyze the release of residual stress by mechanical loading is to be necessary. In this study, the non-linear behavior of weldments under external loading and unloading, such as the decrease and increase of structure stiffness, was investigated by monitoring of nominal stress and strain. Tensile loading and unloading test and the proper degree of stress relaxation was measured by sectioning technique using strain gauge. Analysis model that is indispensable for the effective application of MSR method was established on the basis of test and measurement result.

Several test methods, including micro strain/deformation measurement techniques, have been studied to more reliably measure the micro properties in micro/nano materials. Therefore, in this study, the continuous measurement of in-plane tensile strain in micro-sized specimens of thin film materials was introduced using the micro-ESPI technique. TiN and Au thin films 1 and $0.47\;\mu{m}$ thick, respectively, were deposited on the silicon wafer and fabricated into the micro-sized tensile specimens using the electromachining process. The micro-tensile loading system and micro-ESPI system were developed to measure the tensile strain during micro-tensile test. The micro-tensile stress-strain for these materials was determined using the algorithm for continuous strain measurement. Furthermore, algorithm for enhancing the sensitivity to measurement of in-plane tensile strain was suggested. According to the algorithm for enhancement of sensitivity, micro-tensile strain data between interfringe were calculated. It is shown that the algorithm for enhancement of the sensitivity suggested in this study makes the sensitivity to the in-plane tensile strain increase.
In superconducting coil applications particularly in wet wound coils, coated conductor (CC) tapes are subjected to different type of stresses. These include hoop stress acting along the length of the CC tape and the Lorentz force acting perpendicular to the CC tape's surface. Since the latter is commonly associated with delamination problem of multi-layered CC tapes, more understanding and attention on the delamination phenomena induced in the case of coil applications are needed. Difference on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of each constituent layer of the CC tape, the bobbin, and the impregnating materials is the main causes of delamination in CC tapes when subjected to thermal cycling. The CC tape might also experience cyclic loading due to the energizing scheme (on - off) during operation. In the design of degradation-free superconducting coils, therefore, characterization of the delamination behaviors including mechanism and strength in REBCO CC tapes becomes critical. In this study, transverse tensile tests were conducted under different loading conditions using different size of upper anvils on the GdBCO CC tapes. The mechanical and electromechanical delamination strength behaviors of the CC tapes under transverse tensile loading were examined and a two-parameter Weibull distribution analysis was conducted in statistical aspects. As a result, the CC tape showed similar range of mechanical delamination strength regardless of cross-head speed adopted. On the other hand, cyclic loading might have affected the CC tape in both upper anvil sizes adopted.
Disc-type and ring-type specimens of four different materials were tested to investigate the tensile characteristics and their brief results are presented. Materials tested were marble, granite, cement mortar and plaster. Unizxial tensile strengths are compared with Brazilian and ring test strengths. It was found that Brazilian strengths were usually greater than uniaxial tensile strengths and affected by loading rates. In the ring tests, tensile strengths were generally found to be decreased as relative hole radius being increased. Ring test strengths, however, converged to some value in r$\geq$0.45 of marble, r$\geqq$0.29 of cement mortar and r$\leq$0.5 of plaster specimens. In such range of r, furthermore, transverse cracking of specimens were observed.
The research reported here is concerned with the effects of the fiber combination condition and water/cement ratio on the mechanical properties of high performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC). An experimental investigation of the behavior of steel cords(SC) and SC and Polyethylene(PE) hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious material under compressive and tensile loading is presented. In this experimental research, the tensile and compressive strength and strain capacity of HPFRCC were selected using the cylindrical specimens. The results show that W/C ratio is a significant effect factor on the compressive and tensile performance of HPFRCC. The envelope curve concept applies to hybrid fiber-reinforced cementitious composites in tension just as it does to compressive stress-strain curve of fiber-reinforced cement composites. For practical purposes, the tensile envelope curve may be taken to be the same as the monotonic tensile stress-strain curve.

Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is one of the most promising construction materials because it exhibits high performance, such as through high strength, high durability, and proper rheological properties. However, it has low tensile ductility compared with other normal strength grade high ductile fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. This paper presents an experimental study on the tensile behavior, including tensile ductility and crack patterns, of UHPC reinforced by hybrid steel and polyethylene fibers and incorporating plastic beads which have a very weak bond with a cementitious matrix. These beads behave as an artificial flaw under tensile loading. A series of experiments including density, compressive strength, and uniaxial tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the tensile behavior including tensile strain capacity and cracking pattern of UHPC investigated in this study can be controlled by fiber hybridization and artificial flaws.
Reinforced concrete (RC) does not provide sufficient resistance against impacts and blast loads, and the brittle structure of RC fails to protect against fractures due to the lack of shock absorption. Investigations on improving its resistance against explosion and impact have been actively conducted on high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs), such as fiber-reinforced concrete and ultra-high-performance concrete. For these HPFRCCs, however, tensile strength and toughness are still significantly lower compared to compressive strength due to their limited fiber volume fraction. Therefore, in this study, the tensile behavior of slurry-infiltrated fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (SIFRCCs), which can accommodate a large number of steel fibers, was analyzed under static and dynamic loading to improve the shortcomings of RC and to enhance its explosion and impact resistance. The fiber volume fractions of SIFRCCs were set to 4%, 5%, and 6%, and three strain rate levels (maximum strain rate: 250 s-1) were applied. As a result, the tensile strength exceeded 15 MPa under static load, and the dynamic tensile strength reached a maximum of 40 MPa. In addition, tensile characteristics, such as tensile strength, deformation capacity, and energy absorption capacity, were improved as the fiber volume fraction and strain rate increased.
