During high speed sewing, the needle thread is exposed to dynamic loading, short strike loading, inertia forces, friction, rubbing, force of check spring, bending, pressure, friction, impact, shock and thermal influence. The dynamic thread loading/tension alters throughout the stitch formation cycle and along its passage through the machine. The greatest tensile force occurs at the moment of stitch stretching, when the take up lever pulls for required thread length through the tension regulator. These stresses act on the thread repeatedly and the thread passes 50-80 times through the fabric, the needle eye and the bobbin case mechanism, before getting incorporated into the seam, which result in upto 40% loss in tensile strength of the sewing thread. This damage in the sewing thread adversely affects its processing and functional performance. In this paper, the contribution of dynamic loading, passage through needle and fabric, and bobbin thread interaction in the loss in tensile properties has been studied. It is observed that the loss in tensile properties occurs mainly due to the bobbin thread interaction. Dynamic loading due to the action of take up lever also causes substantial loss in tenacity and breaking elongation of cotton threads.
In order to clarify the varietal differences of grain shedding in 86 rice varieties with the diverse origin, a bundle of 10 panicles was fallen down on the bottom above 2m height, and several characters related to shattering were investigated. The ratio of grain shedding in the varieties from the Tongil types was the greatest (11. 29%), followed by the native and J aponica types (2.56, 0.17%). The breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of the primary rachis-branch in the Tongil types were weaker than in the native and Japonica types with mean values of 217g and 20.5g, respectively. The fiber cells length of the primary rachis- branch in the Tongil types were shorter in the native and Japonica types. The ratio of grain shedding was significantly correlated with the breaking tensile and bending strengths of the primary rachis- branch, and fiber cell length.
Wool yams were coated with conducting Polypyrrole by chemical synthesis methods. Polymerization of pyrrole was caned out in the presence of wool yarn at various concentrations of the monomer and dopant anion. The changes in tensile, moisture absorption, and electrical Properties of the yam upon coating with conductive polypyrrole are Presented. Coating the wool yams with conductive Polypyrrole resulted in higher tenacity, higher breaking strain, and lower initial modulus. The changes in tensile properties are attributed to the changes in surface morphology due to the coating and reinforcing effect of conductive Polypyrrole. The thickness of the coating increased with the concentration of p-toluene sulfonic acid, which in turn caused a reduction in the moisture regain of the wool yin. Reducing the synthesis temperature and replacing p-toluenesulfonic acid by anthraquinone sulfonic acid resulted in a large reduction in the resistance of the yam.

Lap splice is used in building construction up to recently. As buildings become higher and larger, the use of high tensile bar is increasing due to increasing in the use of high compression concrete. However the using of high tensile bar in lap splice causes eccentricity and difficulty in placing of concrete inside the form, therefore not allowing enough intervening material. Various mechanical connection are being developed but the coupler of today needs either a secondary intervening material or secondary processing that consumes much time. Therefore a coupler, needing neither a secondary intervening material nor secondary processing, was made in this study which lead to following results. (1) Breaking occurred in all experimented rebar. (2) Acquirement of tension exceeding the standard requirement. (3) Acquirement of elongation percentage within the standard requirement.
A poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/organosilicate nanocomposite, with enhanced mechanical properties, has been prepared using the melt intercalation method. For this purpose, a new organic modifier has been synthesized for the preparation of organosilicate, which is thermally stable and compatible with PET. The use of the new organosilicate yielded almost exfoliated PET nanocomposite; whereas, the PET nanocomposites prepared by use of commercial organoclays (Cloisite 15A and 30B) show only an intercalated morphology. Particularly, the use of the new organosilicate showed an enhanced tensile modulus, and without sacrifice of the tensile strength and elongation on breaking, while the use of commercial organoclays only exhibit a trade-off between those mechanical properties.

This study is intended to analyze how formations affect the tensile and tear strengths of paper at the same basis weight. Light transmitance method using a scanner was employed to measure the degree of formation in terms of gray scale. Scanning method showed close relationship between gray scale value and basis weight. At the same basis weight a sheet of paper with good formation had higher tensile strength in terms of breaking length than that of a paper with poor formation. There was little difference in tear strength depending on formations.

The purpose of present paper is to investigate a fracture characteristics of the finite-width single-edge-notch(SEN) carbon fiber/epoxy reinforced plastics(CFRP) plates by using an acoustic emission(AE). Uni-directionally oriented 10 plies CFRPs specimen which had different notch length were prepared for monotonic tensile test. Matrix cracking appeared over whole testing process and fiber breaking appeared later on mainly Load distribution factor of the matrix confirmed that increased according as increases of plate width ratio. The amplitude distribution of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix cracking, disbonding, interfacial delamination, fiber pull-out, fiber breaking, and etc. In the result of AE amplitude distribution analysis, matrix cracking, fiber disbonding or interfacial delamination, and fiber pull-out or fiber breaking signal correspond to <65dB, <75dB, and <90dB respectively, Also, changes of the slope of cumulative AE energy represented crazing phenomena or degradation of materials.
In this paper we have extensively studied what and how processing parameters for quasi-carbonization influence the breaking strength and modulus of resulting quasi-carbon fabrics that are prepared from stabilized PAN fabrics with a spun yarn texture. Seven processing parameters have been considered as follows: applied tension, final heat-treatment temperature, heating rate, heating step, holding time, cooling rate, and purging gas purity. The results indicate that optimal uses of applied tension, final heat-treatment temperature, heating rate, and heating step during quasi-carbonization process are primarily important to increase the tensile properties of quasi-carbon fabrics and holding time, cooling rate, and purging gas purity are less importantly contributed.

Following a treatment with edible oils and/or washing, the tensile properties of vulcanized rubber were measured to assess the effect of the sorbed edible oil. Rubber soiled with soybean oil, after 8 weeks storage in a 30$^{\circ}C$ incubator, retained 61% of its original strength, and rubber soiled and washed retained the 73%. The strength of the rubber soiled with oil decreased remarkably during the first 2 weeks. After repeating this soiling and/or washing 7 times, the soiled rubber had only 16% of its original strength, the rubber soiled and washed had 45%. In all cases, breaking elongations were not decreased as much as tensile strengths; therefore , more of the elasticity of the rubber remained than did the strength. From these results it is concluded that washing after soiling with oils is very helpful in maintaining the strength of rubber. In this study, three different surfactant solutions, AS, AE and AS/AE, were used. In the AS solution, the contact angle of the soybean oil was greater and the work of the detergency was the smaller than in either the AE or the AS/AE solution, the loss of the strength of the rubber washed in AS solution did not decrease significantly. These results suggest that rolling-up, emulsification and solubilization also participate in the removal of oil from rubber.
Tensile strength is considered key properties for characterizing rock material in engineering project. It is determined by direct and indirect methods. Point load test is a useful testing method to estimate the tensile strengths of rocks. In this paper, the effects of rock shape on the point load index of gypsum are investigated by PFC2D simulation. For PFC simulating, initially calibration of PFC was performed with respect to the Brazilian experimental data to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. In second step, nineteen models with different shape were prepared and tested under point load test. According to the obtained results, as the size of the models increases, the point load strength index increases. It is also found that the shape of particles has no major effect on its tensile strength. Our findings show that the dominant failure pattern for numerical models is breaking the model into two pieces. Also a criterion was rendered numerically for determination of tensile strength of gypsum. The proposed criteria were cross checked with the results of experimental point load test.
