Hydro-meteorological extremes are trivial in these days. Therefore, it is important to identify extreme hydrological events in advance to mitigate the damage due to the extreme events. In this context, exploring temporal distribution of sub-daily extreme rainfall at multiple rain gauges would informative to identify different states to describe severity of the disaster. This study proposehidden Markov chain model (HMM) based rainfall analysis tool to understand the temporal sub-daily rainfall patterns over South Korea. Hourly and daily rainfall data between 1961 and 2017 for 92 stations were used for the study. HMM was applied to daily rainfall series to identify an observed hidden state associated with rainfall frequency and intensity, and further utilized the estimated hidden states to derive a temporal distribution of daily extreme rainfall. Transition between states over time was clearly identified, because HMM obviously identifies the temporal dependence in the daily rainfall states. The proposed HMM was very useful tool to derive the temporal attributes of the daily rainfall in South Korea. Further, daily rainfall series were disaggregated into sub-daily rainfall sequences based on the temporal distribution of hourly rainfall data.
This study used the beta distribution to analyze the independent annual maximum rainfall events from 1961 to 2010 and decided the representative rainfall event for Seoul. In detail, the annual maximum rainfall events were divided into two groups, the upper 50% and the lower 50%. For each group, a beta distribution was derived to pass the mean location of the rainfall peaks. Finally, the representative rainfall event was decided as the rainfall histogram of the arithmetic average of the two beta distributions derived. The representative rainfall event derived has a realistic shape very similar to those observed annual maximum rainfall events, especially with the higher rainfall peak compared to that of the Huff distribution. Comparison with other rainfall distribution models shows that the temporal distribution of the representative rainfall event derived in this study is most similar to the Keifer & Chu model.

This study reviewed the Weiss model, probably the only theoretical study available on the fixed- to true-interval rainfall conversion factor (CF), and implemented to propose a modified Weiss model. Also, the characteristics of the temporal distribution of rainfall were considered in the estimation of CF to overcome the problem of these two models, whose results were compared with those estimated empirically. As results, the CF was found to be differently estimated depending on the temporal distribution of rainfall. Especially, the theoretical CF estimate for the center-concentrated rainfall distribution was found to be very similar to that of empirical results of domestic and foreign studies.

The objective of this study is to analyze the temporal pattern characteristic of short-duration rainfall defined as a rainfall durations of 6 hours or less by the Huff's 4th quartile distribution. To analyze the temporal pattern characteristic of short-duration rainfall, the rainfall data are classified by rainfall duration and rainfall type(Changma, Typhoon, Severe rain storm, Frontal storm) and change of rainfall segment. Also, the results of this study compared with result of research work of Korea Institute of Construction Technology(1989) and Ministry of Construction & Transportation(2000). The conclusions of this study are as follows; (1) Short-duration rainfall with duration of 6 hours or less is found to be most prevalent frist-quartile storms. (2) In the case of rainfall type, Changma and Severe rain storms and Frontal storm is found second-quartile storms, and Typhoon is found third-quartile storms. (3) In the result by change of sixth segment storms, the type of temporal pattern of rainfall is found to be most prevalent two sixth parts, (4) Comparative analysis of the results shows that shapes of the dimensionless cumulative curves and values are different from those of existing researches.
Inundation damage is increasing every year due to localized heavy rain and an increase of rainfall exceeding the design frequency. Accordingly, the importance of hydraulic structures for flood control and defense is also increasing. The hydraulic structures are designed according to its purpose and performance, and the amount of flood is an important calculation factor. However, in Korea, design rainfall is used as input data for hydrological analysis for the design of hydraulic structures due to the lack of sufficient data and the lack of reliability of observation data. Accurate probability rainfall and its temporal distribution are important factors to estimate the design rainfall. In practice, the regression equation of temporal distribution for the design rainfall is calculated using the cumulative rainfall percentage of Huff's quartile method. In addition, the 6th order polynomial regression equation which shows high overall accuracy, is uniformly used. In this study, the optimized regression equation of temporal distribution is derived using the variable selection method according to the principle of parsimony in statistical modeling. The derived regression equation of temporal distribution is verified through the significance test. As a result of this study, it is most appropriate to derive the regression equation of temporal distribution using the stepwise selection method, which has the advantages of both forward selection and backward elimination.
For the design of hydraulic structures, the design flood discharge corresponding to a specific frequency is generally used by using the design storm calculated according to the rainfall-runoff relationship. In the past, empirical equations such as rational equations were used to calculate the peak flow rate. However, as the duration of rainfall is prolonged, the outflow patterns are different from the actual events, so the accuracy of the temporal distribution of the probability rainfall becomes important. In the present work, Huff's quartile method is used for the temporal distribution of rainfall, and the third quartile is generally used. The regression equation for Huff's quadratic curve applies a sixth order polynomial equation because of its high accuracy throughout the duration of rainfall. However, in statistical modeling, the regression equation needs to be concise in accordance with the principle of simplicity, and it is necessary to determine the regression coefficient based on the statistical significance level. Therefore, in this study, the statistical significance test for regression equation for temporal distribution of the Huff's quartile method, which is used as the temporal distribution method of design rainfall, is conducted for 69 rainfall observation stations under the jurisdiction of the Korea Meteorological Administration. It is statistically significant that the regression equation of the Huff's quartile method can be considered only up to the 4th order polynomial equation, as the regression coefficient is significant in most of the 69 rainfall observation stations.
This study suggested the parameter estimation method for given rainfall events to be properly expressed by the beta distribution. For this purpose, this study compared the characteristics of probability density function with the parameter proposed considering the cases with and without addition to the rainfall peak, and the cases of using the real hyetograph and the rearranged hyetograph about the rainfall peak. As an example, this study analyzed the independent rainfall events at Seoul in 2010 and the annual maximum independent rainfall events from 1961 to 2010. The results derived are as follows. First, this study confirmed the necessity of additional consideration on rainfall peak to mimic the real hyetograph of rainfall events by the beta distribution. Second, this study confirmed the case of using rearranged hyetograph about the rainfall peak derived a better beta distribution to well mimic the characteristics of real rainfall than the case using the real hyetograph.
This study investigated characteristics of rainfall and water quality in Saemangeum area with attention to temporal and spatial distributions. A high variability in rainfall was noted during July and August. The temporal analysis of water quality data indicated that DO and TN as well as BOD, COD and SS were within national standards except for increased concentrations during spring and summer, unlike TP values that indicated poor water quality. Standard deviation showed a high variability in SS among the seasons most especially during summer. The high dispersion indicated variability in the chemical composition of pollutants where the temporal and spatial variations caused by polluting sources and/or seasonal changes were most evident for BOD and COD during winter and spring. The box plots and bar charts showed steadily low concentrations of BOD, COD, TN and TP except within Iksan and notable significant variations in SS concentrations among the monitoring stations. Thus, high pollution levels requiring intervention were identified in Mangyeong river basin with particular concern for areas represented by Iksan station. It was noted that Iksan received a considerable amount of rainfall which meant high runoff which could explain the significant pollution levels revealed in the water quality spatial distribution. Major pollution contributing pollutants within Saemangeum area were identified as SS, BOD, COD and TN. Therefore the present results could be used as a guideline for the temporal and spatial distributions analysis of both rainfall and water quality in Saemangeum watershed.
In this study, statistical analysis under both stationary and non-stationary climate was conducted for rainfall data measured in Seoul. Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) distribution and Gumbel distribution were used for the analysis. Rainfall changes under the non-stationary climate were estimated by applying time variable (t) to location parameter (${\xi}$). Rainfall depths calculated in non-stationary climate increased by 1.1 to 6.2mm and 1.0 to 4.6mm for the GEV distribution and gumbel distribution respectively from those stationary forms. Changes in annual maximum rainfall were estimated with rate of change in the location parameter (${\xi}1{\cdot}t$), and temporal changes of return period were predicted. This was also available for re-evaluating the current sewer design return period. Design criteria of sewer system was newly suggested considering life expectance of the system as well as temporal changes in the return period.

The spatio-temporal pattern in precipitation is a significant element in defining characteristics of precipitation. In this study, a new scheme on regionalization utilizing temporal information was introduced on the basis of existing approaches that is mainly based on simple moments of data and geographical information. Given the identified spatio-temporal pattern, this study was extended to characterize regional pattern of annual maximum rainfall over Korea. We have used circular statistics to characterize the temporal distribution on the precipitation, and the circular statistics allow us to effectively assess changes in timing of the extreme rainfall in detail. In this study, a modified K-means method was incorporated with derived temporal characteristics of extreme rainfall in order to better characterize hydrologic pattern for regional frequency analysis. The extreme rainfall was reasonably separated into five categories that considered most attributes in both quantitative and temporal changes in extremes. The results showed that the proposed approach is a promising approach for regionalization in term of physical understanding of extreme rainfall.
