Purpose: To improve glasses temple's insert processibility of CA/PEG blend, triacetin with higher specific heat values in the processing temperature range is used as second plasticizer. Methods: The total amount of plasticizer is fixed at 30 wt% by CA. To determine optimal CA/PEG/triacetin blend for glasses frame, blends with different composition ratio were examined by various analysis: thermal properties, mechanical properties, glossiness. Results: Specific heat of the CA/PEG blend increased as the content of triacetin. In CA/PEG/triacetin blends, as triacetin concentration is increased, glass transition temperature is decreased and heat conservation rate of composites is increased. Furthermore, CA/PEG/triacetin blend exhibited higher mechanical properties and similar gloss characterization with CA/PEG blend. Conclusions: It is possible to improve the processibility inserting metal support to CA temple through varying the weight ratio of PEG/triacetin. The extruded sheets of CA/PEG/triacetin blend had better glossiness and mechanical properties than those of CA/PEG blend.
Bowonsa Temple (普願寺) is located to the north of Gayasan Mountain in Unsan-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do Province. The cultural properties it enshrines were produced during the late Unified Silla and early Goryeo periods, and include an Iron Seated Buddha. The Japanese Government-General of Korea Museum planned a survey on historical remains in Chungcheongnam-do Province during the early Japanese colonial era, and a field survey was conducted at the Bowonsa Temple site in 1916 (Taishō 5). During this survey, the sculpture of the Iron Seated Buddha (knee: width 212 cm x thickness 167 cm) was found enshrined in a hut. The sculpture was moved to Gyeongbokgung Palace in the following year. However, it is clear that the colossal Iron Seated Buddha was being housed at the Bowonsa Temple site at the start of the Japanese colonial era. This Iron Seated Buddha is presumed to have been produced in 955 by State Preceptor Beopin Tanmun (法印國師 坦文, 900-975). Tanmun was born into an influential family that produced many high officials. He became a leading figure in the Hwaeom (Flower Garland) school of Buddhism under the patronage of King Taejo. He also led Buddhist events at the Goryeo royal court during the reigns of King Hyejong (惠宗, r. 943-945) and King Jeongjong (定宗, r. 945-949). With the emergence of Gyunyeo (均如, 923-973), who was sponsored by Queen Daemok (大穆王后, dates unknown) of the Hwangbo clan (皇甫氏), Tanmun was transferred to Bowonsa Temple far from Kaesong. However, even while there Tanmun strengthened his ties with his supporters under the patronage of the Chungju Yu clan. He appears to have produced this colossal sculpture of Iron Seated Buddha as a prayer for longevity and a happy life for King Gwangjong (光宗, r. 949-975). The inscription on the Stele of State Preceptor Beopin at Bowonsa Temple Site that reads "[I] created a Buddha triad in gold" also suggests the Iron Seated Buddha was produced at Bowonsa Temple. This Iron Seated Buddha is thought to have been enshrined originally in a hall at Building Site No. 3 within the Bowonsa Temple precinct. Since excavations at the temple site have revealed that the temple's main hall was erected in the Joseon period, the Iron Seated Buddha might have been enshrined in a different hall at the time of its creation. It is likely that the sculpture was placed in a hall at Building Site No. 3 since Goryeo-era roof tiles and porcelain have been frequently excavated there and the remains of a square Buddhist altar have survived at the site. At the time of its creation, the Iron Seated Buddha was likely enshrined in a Goryeo-era hall at Building Site No. 3 but was transferred to the main hall during a rebuilding project undertaken at Bowonsa Temple in the Joseon period.
Rock properties of the five storied stone pagoda in the Mooryangsa temple are consist mainly in medium grained biotite granite with partly pegmatite veinlet. A part of the foundation stone is substituted in identical rock properties of the pagoda. The upper part of the pagoda is used purples and stone, gray shale and granodiorite. The most serious problem of the pagoda is structual instability from centered subsidence of the ground in northwestern direction remarkably. In southern view, the upper part of the pagoda also is slanted a little in right, it will need reinforcement by engineering method for structual stability of the stone pagoda. Weathering states of the stone pagoda are affected results of natural and artifical factors due to the surface-exfoliation, fine-fissure, crack, falling offs. On the rock surface of the pagoda, ferro-manganese hydroxide compounds are coated along the rainpathway. Also, bryophyte range concentration spreads raindrops face of roof rock properties, which areadd biological weathering effects. For the synthetic evaluation of the deterioration state, we make detailed surface weathering maps, it will be contribute to investigation for future conservation schemes.
In this study, a scientific analysis of the gold leaf layers and internal structure of the Clay Seated Vairocana Buddha Triad in Seonunsa Temple, Gochang (Treasure No. 1752) was conducted. The surface of the Buddha statues is a gold foil, and the gold leaf layer consists of four layers. The gold leaf layer first composed on the molding clay was produced in the order of lacquer-fabrics-lacquer-gold foil. Subsequently, it was confirmed that the work was performed three times in the same way. The composition of the Buddha statues was divided into the head, body or upper body, lower body, and pedestal. The body was made in a cylindrical form by connecting vertically oriented wooden materials, and the head and lower body were also connected to the body in an empty form. Thus, the head, body, and lower body are grafted structures that are connected to a single Bokjang-gong. It was confirmed that the Clay Seated Vairocana Buddha Triad in Seonunsa Temple was made using wood materials for the basic form, after which the detailed form was created with molding clay, and the surface was finished with a process of layering gold foil and substances presumed to be lacquer.
The cultural properties of paper made from 11 to 16th century of the Kirimsa temple were found in Birozana Buddhist Statue which was made from 15 to 16th century. These have been stored and exhibited in the exhibition showcase. To examine the environment of conservation and the state of paper, we investigated the temperature and the relative humidity in the inside and outside of the Kirimsa museum and examined the external form and the internal state (water content, acidity and whiteness) of paper. During the investigation period from 27 Aug. to 30 Aug. 1997. The average of temperature and relative humidity were $28.2^{\circ}C$, 67% in the outside and $27.1^{\circ}C$, 73% in the inside, respectively. These indicated the air conditioning was wrong. Among the cultural properties of 79 papers stored in the Kirimsa museum, 37 cases had been repaired but 42 cases not. From the result examining the external form, 20 cases needed to repair. In the internal state of the cultural properties of paper, the water contents were from 11.9% to 16.5%, the average was 15.7%, the acidities from pH 5.7 to pH 6.2 and the whiteness from 37 to 45. From these results, we could see the cultural properties of paper stored in the Kirimsa museum was damaged by the several factors (hydrolysis by fungi, repeated elongation and retraction of cellulose) caused mainly by the high temperature and relative humidity. Therefore, for the conservation of the cultural properties of paper stored in the Kirimsa museum, it need to control the temperature at $18~20^{\circ}C$ and the relative humidity at $55\pm5%$ by the appropriate air conditioning. In order to sterilize fungi occurred to the surface of paper, the cultural properties of paper needed to fumigate. The fungi occurred on the surface of paper were wiped out by using of 70%solution dissolved thymol in ethyl alcohol.
This research aims to examine compositional and microstructural properties of grayish-blue-powdered celadon in Wonju Beopcheon-temple site. X-ray fluorescence sequential spectroscopy (XRF) with micro-point analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to determine the chemical composition, microstructure and crystallinity of samples, respectively. As a result, the average compositions of bodies were low silica ($RO_2$) and high flux (RO+$R_2O$). Owing to the high content of calcium oxide the glaze is considered lime type between limealkali type. The body of celdon sheard was found quarts, mullite, microcline, albite. Especially, the body's chemical compositions were compared to the results of previous studies by using a Seger formula. The compositional properties of Grayish-blue-powdered celadon in Wonju Beopcheon-temple site showed diffrently from the the other grayish-blue-powdered celadon.
