Monochromatic x-ray CT has several advantages over conventional CT, which utilizes bremsstrahlung white x-rays from an x-ray tube. There are several methods to produce such monochromatic x-rays. The most popular one is crystal diffraction monochromatization, which has been commonly used because of the fact that the energy spread is very narrow and the energy can be changed continuously. The alternative method is the use of fluorescent x-ray, which has several advantages such as large beam size and fast energy change. We have developed a parallel-beam and a fan-beam monochromatic x-ray CT, and compared some characteristics such as accuracy of CT numbers between those systems. The fan beam monochromatic x-rays were generated by irradiating target materials by incident white x-rays from a bending magnet beam line NE5 in 6.5 GeV Accumulation Ring at Tukuba. The parallel beam monochromatic x-rays were generated by using a silicon double crystal monochromator at the bending magnet beam line BL-20BM in Spring-8. A Cadmium telluride (CdTe) 256 channel array detector with 512mm sensitive width capable of operating at room temperature was used in the photon counting mode. A cylindrical phantom containing eight concentrations of gadolinium was used for the fan beam monochromatic x-ray CT system, while a phantom containing acetone, ethanol, acrylic and water was used for the parallel monochromatic x-ray CT system. The linear attenuation coefficients obtained from CT numbers of those monochromatic x-ray CT images were compared with theoretical values. They showed a good agreement within 3%. It was found that the quantitative measurement can be possible by using the fan beam monochromatic x-ray CT system as well as a parallel beam monochromatic X-ray CT system.
Hot water treatment that is the most appropriate seed disinfection method for organic vegetable farming was evaluated in this study. Among the leafy vegetable seeds lettuce that was the most sensitive to hot water was suitable to treat at $45^{\circ}C$ for 25 min, while Chinese cabbage and radish seeds were optimally treated at $50^{\circ}C$ for 25 min. The treatments resulted in similar or higher seed germination rate than non-treated seeds and promoted plant growth. In addition, fungi such as Alternaria, Aspergillus, Penicillium, or Mucor grown on the seeds were suppressed over 90% and the bacterial growth on lettuce seeds reduced 98.5% by the treatment. Among the fruit vegetable seeds pumpkin that was vulnerable to hot water was suitable to treat at $50^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, while cucumber and hot pepper seeds revealed optimum treatment at $50^{\circ}C$ for 25 min as chinese cabbage and radish. The treatment also showed similar or higher seed germination rate and growth than non-treated seeds. Furthermore, fungi such as Rhizopus, Aspergillus, Penicillium or Mucor grown on the seeds reduced from 72.0% to 95.4%. The bacterial growth on cucumber and red pepper seeds was suppressed from 65.5% to 86.0% by the treatment. Results indicated that the hot water treatment is practical for disinfection of organic vegetable seeds and the optimum temperature and soaking time varied among the seeds.
Protease activity of fig (Ficus carica L.), cultivated in Korea was estimated. In particular, the proteolytic effect on myofibrilar protein was studied. A crude protease extract of fig was prepared in two ways; fig was homogenized in buffer followed by centrifugation, and the supernatant was precipitated by saturated ammonium sulfate followed by dialysis. The former method resulted in 41.15 mM/g fig protease activity, whereas the latter method resulted in 17.65 mM/g fig protease activity. The crude fig protease extract showed high specificity for casein as a substrate followed by egg white, bovine serum albumin, myofibrilar protein, collagen, and elastin. The extract had stable proteolytic activity in a pH range of 6.5~9.0 (optimal at pH 7-8) but lost activity, at pH 2-3. Proteolytic activity for myofibrilar protein was sensitive to pH. The proteolytic activity of the fig extract was steady up to $60^{\circ}C$ but declined at higher temperature. It also began to lose stability in salt concentrations >0.7 M NaCl. Fig has been used as a meat tenderizer for cooking, and these results support the tenderizing effectiveness of fig, particularly for Korean style meat marinating.

Aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of animals, has several physiological effects including anti-hypertensive, diuretic, tranquilizing, and anti-stress properties, in humans. The purpose of this study was to investigate Lactobacillus plantarum K74, which was isolated from kimchi and selected as a strain with a high ability to produce GABA, to develop a new starter culture for fermented milk production. L. plantarum K74 produced $134.52{\mu}g/mL$ GABA in MRS broth containing 1% MSG, $212.27{\mu}g/mL$ GABA in MRS broth containing 2% MSG, and $234.63{\mu}g/mL$ GABA in MRS broth containing 3% MSG. The optimum growth temperature of L. plantarum K74 was $34^{\circ}C$, reaching a pH of 4.4 after 18 hours of growth. L. plantarum K74 was most sensitive to novobiocin out of 16 different antibiotics tested, and was most resistant to kanamycin and polymyxin B. L. plantarum K74 did not produce ${\beta}$-glucuronidase, a carcinogenic enzyme, and was comparatively tolerant to bile juice and low pH. Furthermore, it displayed resistance to Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus at rates of 54.9%, 46.3%, and 0.7%, respectively.
To develop the highly sensitive TLD radiation sensors, $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu-PTFE TLDs are fabricated by polymerizing the PTFE(polytetrafluoroethylene) with $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu TL phosphors. The $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu TL phosphors having the highest sensitivity of $X/{\gamma}$-rays are obtained by sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ in $N_{2}$ atmosphere a mixture of $BaSO_{4}$ powder with 1mol% Eu($Eu_{2}O_{3}$), 6mol% $NH_{4}Cl$ and 5mol% $(NH_{4})_{2}SO_{4}$ which were co-precipitated in dilute sulfuric acid and then dried. The activation energy, frequency factor and kinetic order of $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu TL phosphor are 1.17eV, $3.6{\times}10^{11}/sec$ and 1.25, respectively. And the spectral peak of $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu is about 425nm. The optimum TL Phosphor content and thickness of the $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu-PTFE TLD are 40wt% and $105.7mg/cm^{2}$. The optimum polymerization temperature and time for fabrication of $BaSO_{4}$ : Eu-PTFE TLDs are $380^{\circ}C$ and 2 hours in air, respectively. The linear dose range to ${\gamma}$ rays is 0.01-20Gy and fading rate is about 10%/60hours.

To establish a greening assay for screening, and physiological and biochemical studies of the compounds affecting biosynthesis of plant pigments, were conducted on environmental factors, and on ways of incubation and illumination which affect plant greening. Greening was good when both cucumber and barley were grown for 5 to 6 days at $25^{\circ}C$ in darkness, when adaxial sides of cucumber cotyledons were contacted with the solution, and when barley leaf fragments were taken 0.5 to 2.0cm from the leaf tip. Potassium phosphate buffer(pH 6.0) at 10mM was most desirable for plant greening. The speed of greening during illumination was increased as the temperature increased from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. The responses were sensitive more in cucumber than in barley, and in chlorophyll biosynthesis than in carotenoid biosythesis. The content of chlorophyll was greatest at the light intensity of 5000 and 1000 lux for cucumber and barley, respectively, but the biosynthesis of carotenoids were greatest at the light intensity higher than for chlorophyll. In use of solvents for dissolving chemicals, acetone, ethyl alcohol and DMSO at 10, 0.1 and 2.5% or less, respectively, did not affect the biosynthesis of plant pigments. $pI_{50}$ values were calculated for chemicals affecting pigment biosynthesis.
In March 1997, a new rhabdovirus was isolated from moribund cultured Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in sea water tank and cage culture systems in Kyung-Nam and Chun-Nam province, Korea. At temperature $15^{\circ}C$ the virus replicated and induced cytopathic effects (CPE), which progressed to eventual cytolysis, in susceptible cell lines, including RTG-2 and EPC. The CHES-214 cell line was refractory. Virus particles were bullet-shaped and measured $70nm{\times}100$ to 150 nm in size. The isolate was sensitive to pH 3, to diethyl ether, and to heat ($50^{\circ}C$ 5 min, $60^{\circ}C$ 1 min). Viral replication was not inhibited by $10^{-4}$ M 5-iododeoxyuridine. Virus infectivity was reduced by anti-HRV (8401-H) rabbit serum, but can not reduced by antisera against infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), chum salmon reovirus (CSV), retrovirus of salmonid (RVS) and infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). HRV virus antigen was detected by fluorescent antibody test (FAT) in the cytoplasm of infected EPC cell. Purified isolates virions were composed of: polymerase (L), glycoprotein (G), nucleoprotein (N) and 2 matrix proteins (M1 and M2). Based upon their relative mobilities, the estimated molecular weights of the proteins were: L, 160 kDa; G, 55 kDa; N, 45 kDa; M1, 26 kDa; and M2, 22 kDa.

Ni-YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) composite powders were fabricated by glycine nitrate process. The prepared powders were sintered at $1300{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 h in air and reduced at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in a nitrogen and hydrogen atmosphere. The microstructure, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion and mechanical properties of the Ni-YSZ cermets have been investigated with respect to the volume contents of Ni. A porous microstructure consisting of homogeneously distributed Ni and YSZ phases together with well-connected grains was observed. It was found that the open porosity, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion and bending strength of the cermets are sensitive to the volume content of Ni. The Ni-YSZ cermet containing 40 vol% Ni was ascertained to be the optimum composition. This composition offers sufficient open porosity of more than 30 %, superior electrical conductivities of 917.4 S/cm at $1000^{\circ}C$ and a moderate average thermal expansion coefficient of $12.6{\times}10^{-6}^{\circ}C^{-1}$ between room temperature and $1000^{\circ}C$.

Digital servo implementation in optical servo chip has been spotlighted since it is easy to integrate with other blocks and it has less sensitive characteristics change in terms of temperature variation and better flexibility to the system variation like pick-up. Therefore, Optical disc players adopted digital servo are increasing in market. However, one drawback of digital signal processor embedded digital servo is power consumption that is one of the most important factors of portable optical disc player system. For that reason, this paper introduces new architecture to reduce power consumption of digital servo by means of reducing DSP load but increasing minimum hardware size. The main idea of reducing power consumption of digital servo greatly is utilizing CDP characteristics as most operations are done and used up most operating steps of DSP at the initial time, but most power consumption is occurred in play mode. Therefore, if operating steps for digital filtering in play mode could be reduced greatly, power consumption of overall system can be reduced greatly. This paper shows an example that low power digital servo architecture whose current is reduced almost 83%, compare to that of digital servo which is not applied by the low power architecture introduced in this paper.

In order to overcome the lack of reactivity with hydrogen gas ($H_2$) and utilize unique properties of Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) for the application to hydrogen sensors, there have been intensive works on the surface functionalization of CNTs with various types of nanoparticles including Pd. In the present work, we have investigated the effect of dendrimers and Pd nanoparticles to the hydrogen sensing properties of CNTs by comparing three types of samples: Pd/SWNTs (Sample I), Pd/dendrimer/SWNTs (Sample II) and heat-treated Pd/dendrimers/SWNTs (Sample III). As a result of IV measurement under the $H_2$ and air, sample I was found to have a high sensitivity (25%) to $H_2$, but to have a very slow response time (324 s) and recovery rate. On the other hand, Sample II was found to show much faster response time (3 s) and good recovery rate but lower sensitivity (8.6%) than Sample I which is due to induced dipole moments in the dendrimers. Interestingly, Sample III showed both fast response time (7 s) and high sensitivity (25%), indicating that the pyrolysis of the dendrimers during heat treatment which reduce the distance between the surface of the SWNTs and the functionalized Pd nanoparticles plays a key role in improving the sensitivity. The pyrolysis of the dendrimers in Pd nanoparticle-dendrimer-SWNTs was found to enable a significant electrical conductance modulation upon exposure to extremely low concentrations (10 ppm) of $H_2$ in air. Our results demonstrate that the Pd Nanoparticle-Grafted Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes(SWNTs) with Dendrimers can be used to detect hydrogen, makingoutstanding properties such as fast response, and recovery time, high sensitivity, low detection limit at room temperature compared with other types of hydrogen sensors.
