A two-dimensional zone-like model is developed to predict the interaction between hot gas layer and water droplets after sprinkler activation. The model combines the motion equations for each droplet with heat and mass transfer between the gas and water. The results indicate that negative buoyancy in the hot layer can only be obtained if the initial temperature profile is uniform. If an experimental profile Is used instead, positive buoyancy results. This conclusion has been confirmed with experimental data.

Finite-difference analysis was conducted to study the natural convection of a stably stratified salt-water solution in an annulus due to lateral heating. The main purpose of this study is to examine in detail the multi-layered flow structure. Calculation was thus made for R $a_{\eta}$=2*10$^{5}$ and 6.5*10$^{5}$ . Formation of layered flow structure, merging process of layers, the corresponding temperature and concentration distributions, Nusselt number variations with time are examined. Numerical results show that in each layer, the temperature profile looks 'S`-shaped and the concentration profile is uniform due to the convective mixing. The formation of the roll and the layer is governed by natural convection due to the temperature gradient and the merging process of the layer by diffusion of the concentration.ation.
An experimental study of steam condensation on a subcooled thick water layer (0.018 ~0.032 m) in a countercurrent stratified flow has been performed using a nearly horizontal circular pipe. A total of 103 average interfacial condensation heat transfer coefficients were obtained and parametric effects of steam and water flow rates and the degree of subcooling on condensation heat transfer were examined. The measured local temperature and velocity distributions in the thick water layer revealed that there was a thermal stratification due to the lack of full turbulent thermal mixing in the lower region of the water layer Two empirical Nusselt number correlations, one in terms of average steam and water Reynolds numbers, and the water Prandtl number, and the other in terms of the Jakob number in place of the Prandtl number, which agree with most of the data within $\pm$ 25%, were developed based on the bulk flow properties. Comparisons of the present data with existing correlations showed that the present data were significantly lower than the values predicted by existing correlations.
Recently, it has been observed in the East Sea that temperature increases below the thermocline, and dissolved oxygen increase in the intermediate layer but decrease below it. The layer of minimum dissolved oxygen deepens and the bottom homogeneous layer in oxygen becomes thinner. It emerges very probably that these changes are induced by the mode change of deep water formation associated with global warming. To further support this hypothesis, a one-dimensional model experiment is performed. First, a thermal profile is obtained by injecting a cold and high oxygen deep water into the bottom layer, say the bottom mode. Then, two thermal profiles are obtained from the bottom mode profile by assuming that either all the deep water introduce into the intermediate layer has been initiated, say the intermediate mode, or that only a part of the deep water has been initiated into the intermediate layer, say the intermediate-bottom mode. The results, from the intermediate-bottom mode experiment are closest to the observed results. They show quite well the tendency for oxygen to increase in the intermediate layer and the simultaneous thinning of the bottom homogeneous layer in oxygen. Therefore, it can be said that the recently observed slow variation of the thermal structure might be associated with changes in the deep water formation from the bottom mode to the intermediate-bottom mode.

The characteristics of temperature profile around human body with heating life vest at sea were investigated in this paper. Especially, the temperature profile of human body was numerically calculated by finite difference method with Mathcad. The main parameters were seasonal mean sea water temperature, heating amount and heating duration time of heating life vest. In this paper, the boundary layer was composed by the difference matters, and the thermal conductivity was calculated with an adjacent cells using thermal resistance method. It was clarified that the body temperature was kept highly and the risk of death from hypothermia was reduced by wearing heating life vest.

Numerical investigations were conducted to study the convective phenomena of an initially stably stratified salt water solution with lateral heating in a uniformly rotating annulus. The method of investigation is the finite difference analysis of the basic conservation equation for an axisymmetric, unsteady, double-diffusive convection and calculation is made for R $a_{\eta}$=2*10$^{5}$ and Ta=10$^{7}$ ~ 2.5*10$^{8}$ . Formation of layered flow structure, merging process of layers, the corresponding temperature and concentration distributions, Nu variation with time are examined. Numerical results show that in each layer, the temperature profile looks 'S'-shaped and the concentration profile is uniform due to the convective mixing. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly. As the effect of the rotation increases, the generation of rolls at hot wall, the formation and merging of layers are delayed. The average Nu shows the trend of conduction heat transferees the effect of the rotation increases.n increases.

The aqua-plasma is the non-thermal plasma in electrical conductive electrolyte by generates the vapor film layer on the immersed metal electrode surface. This plasma can generate the hydroxyl radical by dissociate the water molecule with the plasma electron. To develop the plasma discharge device for high efficiency in the hydroxyl radical generation, proper model for estimation of plasma power is necessary. In this work, the 1-D spherical model was developed, considering temperature dependence material constants. The relation between the plasma power and hydroxyl generation was also studied by the comparison between the optical emission intensity from the hydroxyl radical using monochromator and estimated plasma power. First, the thickness of vapor layer thickness was estimated using the Navier-Stokes fluid equation in order to calculate the discharge E-field inside vapor layer. Using the E-field magnitude and power balance on the plasma generation, it was possible to estimate the plasma power. The plasma power was assumed to uniformly fill the vapor layer and the temperature of vapor layer was fixed in the boiling temperature of electrolyte, 375K. In the experiment, the aqua-plasma was discharged in the saline by applied the voltage on the bipolar electrode. The range of applied voltage was 234 to 280V-rms in the frequency of 380 kHz. Two type electrodes were produced with two ${\Phi}0.2$ tungsten. The plasma power was estimated from the V-I signal from the two high voltage probes and current probe. The estimated plasma power agreed with the profile of emission intensity when the plasma discharged between the metal electrode and vapor layer surface. However, when the plasma discharged between the metal electrodes, the increasing rate of emission intensity was lower than the increase of plasma power. It implies that the surface reaction is more sufficient rather than the volume reaction in the radical generation, due to the high density of water molecule in the liquid.

A study has been conducted to provide the experimental information for the velocity and temperature profiles of steam-air mixutre and to investigate their roles on the film condensation with wavy interface. Saturated gas mixture of steam-air was made to flow through the nearly horizontal$(4.1^{\circ})$ square duct of 0.1m width and 1.56m length at atmospheric pressure, and was condensated on the bottom cold plate. The air mass fraction in the gas mixture was changed from zero(W =0, pure steam) to one(W =1, pure air), and the bulk velocity was varied from 2 to 4 m/s. Water film was injected concurrently to investigate the effect of wavy interface on the condensation. The velocity and temperature profiles were measured by LDA system and thermocouples along the three parameters ; air mass fraction, mixture velocity and film flow rate. The profiles moved toward the interface with increasing steam mass fraction, mixture velocity and film flow rate. The Prandtl and Schmidt numbers were near one in the present experimental range, however there was no complete similarity between the velocity and temperature profiles of gas mixture. And the heat transfer characteristics and interfacial structure were coupled with each other.
PURPOSES : A finite difference model considering snow melting process on porous asphalt pavement was derived on the basis of heat transfer and mass transfer theories. The derived model can be applied to predict the region where black-ice develops, as well as to predict temperature profile of pavement systems where a de-icing system is installed. In addition, the model can be used to determined the minimum energy required to melt the ice formed on the pavement. METHODS : The snow on the porous asphalt pavement, whose porosity must be considered in thermal analysis, is divided into several layers such as dry snow layer, saturated snow layer, water+pavement surface, pavement surface, and sublayer. The mass balance and heat balance equations are derived to describe conductive, convective, radiative, and latent transfer of heat and mass in each layer. The finite differential method is used to implement the derived equations, boundary conditions, and the testing method to determine the thermal properties are suggested for each layer. RESULTS: The finite differential equations that describe the icing and deicing on pavements are derived, and we have presented them in our work. The framework to develop a temperature-forecasting model is successfully created. CONCLUSIONS : We conclude by successfully creating framework for the finite difference model based on the heat and mass transfer theories. To complete implementation, laboratory tests required to be performed.

This study has dealt with the ice making characteristics in a rectangular vessel cooled from below direction with experiment and numerical analysis. The experiment and numerical analysis were carried out under the following conditions which are the cooling wall temperatures of -5[$^{\circ}C$], -10[$^{\circ}C$], and -15[$^{\circ}C$]. The temperature profile of non-frozen layer was calculated by numerical analysis as the form of non-dimensional temperature. From this study, it is cleared that the existence of natural convection is clearly known. And also the non-dimensional freezing amount was derived from experimental result. This correlation equation will give a useful information to the designers of ice making system.
