  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of thickness and moisture on temperature distributions of reinforced concrete walls under fire conditions. Toward this goal, the first three wall specimens having different thicknesses are heated for 2 h according to ISO standard heating curve and the temperature distribution through the wall thickness is measured. Since the thermal behavior of the tested walls is influenced by thickness, as well as moisture content, three additional walls are prepared and preheated to reduce moisture content and then tested under fire exposure. The experimental results clearly show the temperatures measured close to the fire exposed surface of the thickest wall with 250 mm thickness is the highest in the temperatures measured at the same location of the thinner wall with 150 mm thickness because of the moisture clog that is formed inside the wall with 250 mm of thickness. This prevents heat being transferred to the opposite side of the heated surface. This is also confirmed by the thermal behavior of the preheated walls, showing that the temperature is well distributed in the preheated walls as compared to that in non-preheated walls. Finite element models including moisture clog zone are generated to simulate fire tests with consideration of moisture clog effect. The temperature distributions of the models predicted from the transient heat analyses are compared with experimental results and show good agreements. In addition, parametric studies are performed with various moisture contents in order to investigate effect of moisture contents on the thermal behaviors of the concrete walls.

  • Judging from the studies carried out by Dr. Jo, Yong Jin on the Koreans' faces, Koreans divided into two constitutions according to their facial features and heritages. The one population is the Northern lineage whose ancestor migrated from Siberia in ice age. In order to survive in cold climate, they have developed a high level of metabolic heat production. Cold adaptation for preventing heat loss results in a reduction in the facial surface area with small eyes, nose and lips. The other population is the Southern lineage who is the descent of native in Korean peninsular. They have big eyes with double edged eyelids, broad nose and thick lips. It is generally believed that both genetic and environmetal factors influence eating behaviors. Although we can't recognized their heritage that may contribute to the metabolism and eating behavior, we commonly recognize their physiological heritage acceding to their facial features. In order to investigate the relationship among the size and shape of facial feature, the eating behavior, anthropometric measurement in female college students, the eating behaviors was measured during an instant-noodle lunch eaten in a laboratory setting at the ambient temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. The anterior surface area of left eye and length of right eye were positively correlated with the difference between the peak postprandial and the meal-start core temperature. The surface area of lower lip also negatively correlated with the meal-start core temperature and meal duration. In addition, the total lips' area was positively correlated with the difference between the peak postprandial and the meal-start core temperature and negatively correlated with the meal duration. However anthropometric measurements were not related with the size of facial features.

  • Nickel fine powders were prepared from nickel chloride aqueous solution containing ethanol as an organic solvent, and their oxidation behaviors were investigated. The reduction reaction by hydrazine from nickel chloride aqueous solution containing ethanol depend on reaction temperature. The reduction reaction time by hydrazine decreased with the increase of reaction temperature. By controlling reaction temperature, the products could be obtained spherical particles in the range of 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$~1.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Also, As reaction temperature increased from $40^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$, the particle size slightly increased and had a broad size distribution owing to the presence of the coarse particles. The mean particle size and specific surface area of nickel powders prepared at $60^{\circ}C$ were 0.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 31.8 $\m^2$/g, respectively. Weight loss of the powders at $300^{\circ}C$ was due to composition of $_Ni(OH)2$. In case of heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ in air, oxidation resistance of nickel powders was remarkable than that of as-synthesized.

  • 20mol% Gd-doped CeO2 ultrafine powders as a promising electrolyte for the low temperature solid ox-ide fuel cells were synthesized with particle sizes of 15-20 nm using glycine nitrate process(GNP) fol-lowed by sintering their pellets at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for various times in air and then the electrical properties of the sintered pellets were investigated. The sintering behaviors and electrical properties for the sintered 20 sintered mol% Gd-doped CeO2 pellets were analyzed using dilatometer and SEM and AC two-terminal impedance technique respectively. As the heating temperature increased the synthesized powder had the sintering behaviors to show the start of the significant shrink at temperature of about $700^{\circ}C$ and to show the end of the shrink at the temperature of about 147$0^{\circ}C$. When the pellets were sintered with the vaious times at 150$0^{\circ}C$ the temperatuer which the shrink had been already completed the grain sizes in the sintered 20 mol% Gd-doped GeO2 pellets increased with the increase of the sintering time but their electrical resis-tivities showed the minimum value at the sintering time of 10h. It is due that the pellet sintered for 10h had the minimum activation energy fior the electtrical conduction. Thus it is thought that the decrease of the activation energy with the increase of the sintering time to 10h is induced by the enhanced mi-crostructure like the decrease of pore amount and the grain growth and its increase with the sintering times more than 10h is induced by the increase of the amounts of the impurities such as Mg. Al and Si from the sintering atmosphere.

  • In this paper, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were ozonized and the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behaviors of CNTs-filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) conductive composites were studied. The results of element analysis (EA) and FT-IR indicate that the oxygen-containing functional groups on the CNTs surfaces, such as O-H, C-O, and C=O groups, were increased with the ozonization. Electrical resistivities of the CNTs/HDPE composites were measured by using a digital multimeter. The resistivity of the composites was increased abruptly near the crystalline melting temperature of the HDPE used as matrix, which could be attributed to the destruction of conductive network by the thermal expansion of HDPE. And, the PTC intensity of the CNTs/HDPE composites was increased with the increase of the ozone treatment time. It was probably due to the growing of maximum volume resistivity of the composites induced by the increased oxygen-containing functional groups in the CNTs surfaces.

  • Recently, several researchers made their endeavor to manufacture the photobioreactor(PBR) with characteristic shapes form vacuum and blow forming process. Hence, behaviors of the transparent polycarbonate(PC) plate in the high temperature region should be examined to obtain the desired PBR case via vacuum and blow forming processes. The aim of this paper is to investigate tensile behavior of PC plate in the high temperature. Various tensile tests were performed using high temperature tensile testing machine. The influence of tensile speed, thickness and ambient temperature on tensile behavior in the high temperature was examined. The flow stress and tensile strength augmented when the tensile speed increased. In order to obtain proper flow curves with strain rate effects for different temperature of specimen, G'sell-Jonas model was adopted. The material constants of the G'sell-Jonas model were estimated. The flow curves of the PC plate considering the tensile speed, specimen thickness and temperature were obtained.

  • This investigation deals with a size-dependent coupled thermoelasticity analysis based on Green-Naghdi (GN) theory in nano scale using a new modified nonlocal model of heat conduction, which is based on the GN theory and nonlocal Eringen theory of elasticity. In the analysis based on the proposed model, the nonlocality is taken into account in both heat conduction and elasticity. The governing equations including the equations of motion and the energy balance equation are derived using the proposed model in a nano beam resonator. An analytical solution is proposed for the problem using the Laplace transform technique and Talbot technique for inversion to time domain. It is assumed that the nano beam is subjected to sinusoidal thermal shock loading, which is applied on the one of beam ends. The transient behaviors of fields' quantities such as lateral deflection and temperature are studied in detail. Also, the effects of small scale parameter on the dynamic behaviors of lateral deflection and temperature are obtained and assessed for the problem. The proposed GN-based model, analytical solution and data are verified and also compared with reported data obtained from GN coupled thermoelasticity analysis without considering the nonlocality in heat conduction in a nano beam.
