  • There were many papers on the bilateral teleoperation system. But a few papers dealt with the controller design method in the presence of uncertainties, disturbances and measurement noises. In this paper, we propose a robust controller design framework in teleoperation, which can overcome the compensation problem that will be defined. To prove the effectiveness of the method of proposed design, comparative simulation with the existing four channel design method was performed

  • This paper presents synchronization of bilateral teleoperation system with time delay using genetic algorithm. In general, bilateral teleoperation system has two main goals; stability and transparency. In the presence of time delay between the master and the slave, we guarantee stability, and optimize the parameter of synchronization control law using genetic algorithm.

  • Future Combat System(FCS), such as unmanned systems that reduce the danger faced by soldiers in the field, are likely to be studied and developed. Soldiers when finding and disposing of mines risk injury and death. Several methods of safe mine retrieval are investigated. In this paper, a mine removal method, which uses a remote controlled robot to get rid of mines using a 4 channel architecture teleoperation method is used. The robot, when in contact with soil and mines, is controlled by a remote control. The feasibility of using teleoperation controlled system to remove mines is demonstrated in this paper. The Matlab-Simulink was used as a tool to simulate mine removal with robots. The force and position of the robot{slave system of 4 channel architecture) and controller(master system of 4 channel architecture) are analyzed when users handle the controller with sinusoidal force.

  • Human Adaptive Mechatronics (HAM), which is a system concept to adapt human characteristics, has been proposed. As the HAM application, this paper addresses an information emphasis scheme to alert some hazards which are undetectable by a human operator. The emphasis scheme employs cognitive psychological approach to human discrimination characteristics because excess or deficient emphasis may disturb the operation. One of advantages of teleoperation system is able to include human valuable abilities as global environment recognition, planning, prediction and so on. To implement these abilities to mechanical system is difficult because of not enough intelligence. Proposed teleoperation system is designed to progress the human abilities, and moreover, to not disturb the abilities. In this paper, we consider that the discrimination characteristics depend on window positions on GUI display and operator's individuality. Finally, the efficiency of the alert scheme is verified by some experiments.

  • This paper describes on a teleoperation system with a simulator on operator's computer. When we control robots over the internet, communication propagation delays exist. These delays are potentially destabilizing the entire system, and degrade the operator's intuition and performance, so we designed teleoperation system with simulator. Instead of feedback image data of work space, remote operator can command by seeing simulator in the his computer. Consequently total working time can be decreased. In this paper, we show a propriety of the teleoperation system with a simulator by comparing with one without a simulator.

  • In this study, we have developed a web-based management system for greenhouse teleoperation. The remote control system consisted of a database, a web-server, a controller in greenhouse, and clients. The database in the server stored user's information and greenhouse conditions was used to manage user's login and conditioning data. The management system developed by using Java applet, which was a client program for effective and easy management of greenhouse, monitored the greenhouse in real time. Master and driver boards were installed in the greenhouse control unit. Database on flowering to collect and analyze data exchanged data with the server. The master board could be managed effectively by timer routine, repeat control within setting time, and algorithm of setting points. Also, the greenhouse conditions could be controlled by manual or remote controller(PC) through a web browser in internet. Furthermore, all of the control devices of the greenhouse were managed by remote control of using PC and checked via camera installed in greenhouse. Finally, we showed the experimental results of the system which was installed in Pusan Horticultural Experiment Station.

  • In direct vehicle teleoperation, a human operator drives a vehicle at a distance through a pair of master and slave device. However, if there is time delay, it is difficult to remotely drive the vehicle due to slow response. In order to address this problem, we introduced a novel methodology of shared vehicle teleoperation using a virtual driving interface. The methodology was developed with four components: 1) virtual driving environment, 2) interface for virtual driving environment, 3) path generator based on virtual driving trajectory, 4) path following controller. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach in simple and cluttered driving environment as well. In the experiments, we compared two sampling methods, fixed sampling time and user defined instant, and finally merged method showed best remote driving performance in term of completion time and number of collision.

  • Future Ground Control Stations (GCSs) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) teleoperation targets better situational awareness by providing extra motion cues to stimulate the vestibular system. This paper proposes a new virtual environment for long range Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) control via Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) communications, which is based on motion platforms. It generates motion cues for the teleoperator for extra sensory stimulation to enhance the guidance performance. The proposed environment employs the distributed component simulation over GSM network as a simulation platform. GSM communications are utilized as a multi-hop communication network, which is similar to global satellite communications. It considers a UAV mathematical model and wind turbulence effects to simulate a realistic UAV dynamics. Moreover, the proposed virtual environment simulates a Multiple Axis Rotating Device (MARD) as Human Machine Interface (HMI) device to provide a complete delay analysis. The demonstrated measurements cover Graphical User Interface (GUI) capabilities, NLoS GSM communications delay, MARD performance, and different software workload. The proposed virtual environment succeeded to provide visual and vestibular feedbacks for teleoperators via GSM networks. The overall system performance is acceptable relative to other Line-of-Sight (LoS) systems, which promises a good potential for future long range, medium altitude UAV teleoperation researches.

  • A new impedance controller is proposed for bilateral teleoperation under a time delay. The proposed controller does not need to measure or estimate the time delay in the communication channel using the force loop-back. In designing a stable impedance controller, absolute stability is used as a stability analysis tool, which results in a less conservative controller than the passivity concept. Moreover, in order to remove the conservatism associated with the assumption of infinite port impedances, the boundaries of human and environment impedance are set to finite values. Based on this, this paper proposes a parameter design procedure for stable impedance controllers. The validity of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated by experiments with a 1-dof master/slave system.

  • Bilateral teleoperation systems, connected to computer networks such as Internet have to deal with the time delay depending on factors such as congestion, bandwidth or distance. And the entire system is easy to become unstable due to irregular time delay. Passivity concept has been using as a framework to solve the stability problem in bilateral control of teleoperation. In this paper, we present a suitable time varying gain inserted in the transmission path that can recover passivity provided a bound on the rate of change of the known delay. Simulation results are presented showing the performance of the resulting control architecture.
