  • Silicone softner(SSN-3) for permanent press(PP) finish was prepared by blending beef tallow hardened oil for Improving softness, water, the emulsion, which was synthesized from pentaerythritol monostearate as a softening component and silicone oil KF-96 as a lubricating component. The prepared SSN-3 and the PP finishing resin were applied to PP finishing cotton broad cloth and P/C gingham samples using one bath method. The properties such as crease recovery, tear strength, bending resistance test were tested. The samples treated with SSN-3 and PP finishing resin have improved properties, compared with nontreated samples, those treated only with PP finishing resin, those treated with commercial PP finishing softners and PP finishing resin. Also from the bending resistance test, the two kinds of fabric samples treated with SSN-3 of 3% showed grade 5 and these were good enough in feeling.

  • Effect of chlorinated polyethylene(cPE) on the morphology and mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene(iPP) and nitrile rubber(NBR) blends was investigated. It was found that incorporation of a small amounts of cPE leads to a decrease in domain size of the dispersed phase, and uniform distribution of the dispersed phase in the blends. The PP/NBR/cPE ternary blends showed an improved tensile and tear strength as well as elongation-at-break as compared to binary PP/NBR blends. From the results on morphology and mechanical properties, optimum amount of the cPE is 5-10 wt% with repect to NBR in the blend.

  • Geocomposites of needle punched and spunbonded nonwovens having the reinforcement and drainage functions were manufactured by use of thermal bonding method. The physical properties (e.g. tensile, tear and bursting strength, permittivity) of these multi-layered nonwovens were dependent on the processing parameters of temperatures, pressures, bonding periods etc. - in manufacturing by use of thermal bonding method. Therefore, it is very meaningful to optimize the processing parameters and physical properties of the geocomposites by thermal bonding method. In this study, an algorithm has been developed to optimize the process of the geocomposites using an artificial neural network (ANN). Geocomposites were employed to examine the effects of manufacturing methods on the analysis results and the neural network simulations have been applied to predict the changes of the nonwovens performances by varying the processing parameters.

  • In this study, the wettability and mechanical properties of silicone rubber impression material were studied by using precipitated silica and fumed silica with different particle size and polarity (hydrophilic/hydrophobic). Curing time of impression material depended on the particle size of fumed silica. The curing time delayed about 9 minutes by using A300, which was the fumed silica with the smallest particle size among the silica used in this study. Wettability of rubber impression material improved with the introduction oi hydrophobic fumed silica(R972). Also, the optimum flow and mechanical properties could be obtained by using blended silica with the 90: 10 ratio of precipitated and fumed silica.

  • Nonwovens have been widely used in various regions from the households to the industrial, agricultural and medical goods. Synthetic fibers have been used for source of nonwovens commonly because of their useful and economic properties. They are not only main factor causing environmental problems but also spend huge cost to renew the environmental disruption by them. Nonwovens must have both cost-competitiveness and environment-friendly property to be the desirable sources in 21th centuries. For meet these needs, it is suitable for the times that economical and environmentally-safe kenaf fibers would be used as raw materials of nonwovens. Kenaf and polyester fibers were blended in 4 types of ratio : 0/100, 20/80, 40/60, 60/40 were needle-punched. The nonwovens properties such as color values, surface appearance, strength, elongations, stiffness, moisture regain, water and oil absorbency, and electrification were tested. As the results, tensile and tear strengths, water and oil absorbency were maximum at 20/80 kenaf/polyester blend nonwoven, because of effecting by nonwoven structure and fiber properties. The moisture regain were increased according to kenaf were blended and the eletrification reduced in proportion to the kenaf fibers by chemical property of fiber composed nonwovens.

  • To make filler loaded conducting rubber which has excellent electronical and physical properties, CR and NBR were mixed with barium ferrite(BaO.6Fe2O3). From the result of this study, vulcanization characteristics shows that curve is upgraded as the filler concentration increases and CR has higher torque than NBR. In physical properties, elongation being higher, modulus comes to decrease. Tear strength gradually decrease after showing the maximum point when is in the 100phr in CR. Resilience is not good to cause the increase in filler concentration. In electrical properties, conductivity becomes low when filler concentration increase. The increase of voltage makes a conductivity grown, but the rate change is weak. The influence of temperature hardly changes on increasing temperature. The morphology and the dispersion of a conductivity filler in vulcanizates through SEM were good. The more filler concentration increases, the shorter the particle interval is.

  • This study aimed to investigate the anatomical structure and fiber quality of four lesser-used wood species namely Benuang (O. sumatrana), Duabanga (D. moluccana), Pisang Merah (H. hellwigii), and Terap (A. odoratissimus). This study evaluated its suitability for raw material in pulp and paper manufacturing. The anatomical structure was observed macro- and microscopically. Macroscopic structures were observed directly to the wood samples, while microscopic characteristics were observed through microtome specimens. Fiber dimension was measured through macerated specimens and fiber quality was analyzed following the Rachman and Siagian's method. Results showed that these four timber species have similarity in the indistinct growth ring, diffuse porous in a radial pattern, rounded solitary vessel outline, 1 to 3 cells of ray width, deposits within the rays, fiber length, and cell wall thickness. Differences were found on vessel diameter, vessel grouping, vessel frequency, tyloses existence, type of axial parenchyma, and ray height. Based on fiber length and its derived values, the wood fibers of all species studied are suitable for pulp and paper manufacturing. They belong to the II quality class. The produced pulp and paper would have good quality, especially in tensile, folding, and tear strength. To promote their utilization, silviculture aspect of these four species has to be well understood.

  • In this study, the effect on flame retardancy and various physical properties when TiO2 was added with a citric acid/phosphate complex acid catalyst together with Pyrovatex CP new (N-methylol dimethylphosphonopropionamide), a phosphorus-based flame retardant, was studied on cotton fibers. SEM-EDS analysis was performed to confirm the surface characteristics and surface element analysis of the flame-retardant treated cotton fibers, and a vertical carbonization test was performed to confirm the char formation capability and flame retardancy according to the phosphoric acid ratio. By comparing the LOI index before and after washing 10 times, the washing durability of the flame retardant solution containing the phosphoric acid catalyst and TiO2 was tested by LOI index after ten washing cycles. In addition, the influence of the flame-retardant processing on the physical properties were compared including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tear strength and whiteness.

  • Purpose: We studied the need for distal clavicle resection by comparing rotator cuff tear patients who underwent non-surgical treatment with and without acromioclavicular joint pathology. Materials and Methods: 45 cases that had been under follow up care for at least 9 months after receiving rotator cuff repair in our hospital between Jan. 2005 and Jun. 2011 had been studied. Acromioclavicular joint pathology group and control group were classified by physical examination and MRI findings. The temporal changes in shoulder joint abduction, internal and external rotation strength, ASES and KSS score of the two groups were measured and analyzed. Results: The acromioclavicular joint pathology complicated rotator cuff injury group's strength measurements for abduction, internal rotation, external rotation were each 8.05 (${\pm}4.54$), 11.33 (${\pm}6.05$), 10.24 (${\pm}5.27$) preoperatively and improved to 13.26 (${\pm}5.50$), 17.51 (${\pm}6.80$), 15.60 (${\pm}5.37$) post operatively while the KSS score and ASES score were each 49.07 (${\pm}15.28$) and 48.65 (${\pm}13.27$) preoperatively, improving to 84.48 (${\pm}10.96$) and 84.65. (${\pm}9.86$). The measurements for the group without complicating acromioclavicular pathology are as follows. The strength for abduction, internal rotation, external rotation was each 6.42 (${\pm}3.11$), 7.59 (${\pm}4.81$) and 7.93 (${\pm}4.49$) preoperatively, improving to 15.85 (${\pm}7.35$), 19.18 (${\pm}9.14$), 16.95 (${\pm}5.70$) post operatively, while the KSS score and ASES score each went from 42.12 (${\pm}6.43$) and 41.37 (${\pm}7.42$) to 83.44 (${\pm}6.30$) and 83.17 (${\pm}7.01$) respectively. The measurements for the two groups, however, did not show a statistically significant difference (p>0.05). Conclusion: Analysis of the rotator cuff injury groups with and without AC joint pathology showed that both groups had improved strength, ASES and KSS scores with no statistical difference difference among the groups. As such, it thought that conservative treatment is an acceptable alternative to distal clavicle resection.
