  • A taxonomic study of small mammals (Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha and Rodentia) was conducted in order to find out the scientific names which have been used in Korea. The synonymy of each species and taxonomical research was reviewed and confirmed in this study. The species names are rearranged based on recent studies. Among the various confused names, available names were adopted such as follows: C. shantungensis shantungensis known as Crocidura suaveolens; C. shantungensis quelpartis known as C. dsinezumi; Rattus tanezumi known as R. rattus, called black rat, roof rat and ship rat, respectively. Apodemus sylvaticus (Muridae, wood mouse) is excluded in the checklist based on indistinct previous records and ambiguous habitation on the Korean Peninsula, and neighbors. In addition, we provide a new Korean vernacular name for Myocastor coypus, called the "Nutria" in Korea. We reflect that several species are repositioned to other genera. A checklist of Korean small mammals and synonym list for each species is provided to avoid confusion of scientific names in Korea. In this study, the list of small mammals in Korea is arranged to 33 species, 20 genera, 8 families, and 3 orders.

  • A survey of insect fauna on Dokdo Island was conducted by Yeungnam University from 2009 to 2016. The survey locations were the two islands of Dokdo Island (i.e., East and West Islands), located in the East Sea of South Korea. As a result of the survey, we identified five orders, 20 families and 27 species including 10 species newly recorded on Dokdo Island, of which Eupelmus australiensis (Girault) is recorded for the first time in South Korea. In combination with the results of previous surveys made from 1981 to 2016, the insect fauna of Dokdo Island is now known to consist of 10 orders, 77 families and 164 species (and 29 additional undetermined species). In this paper, we list the insect fauna on Dokdo Island and present photographs of 10 species with brief taxonomic notes of a eupelmid species.

  • Sparganium coreanum, a barely recognized species in Korea, was rediscovered during a field survey by the authors, who conducted a re-examination of specimens deposited in the Herbarium of the Korea National Arboretum (KH). This species was described initially by H. $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$ from a specimen collected by F. Taquet from Jeju-do (Taquet 2150). Subsequently, however, it was overlooked and unrecognized among South Korean flora. Several populations of S. coreanum were found in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and on Jeju-do, although it has long been recognized as S. erectum owing to certain vegetative morphological characteristics shared between the two species, such as robust stems, a similar plant height, and globose rhizomes. However, it is distinct from S. erectum by the number of female heads on the lowest inflorescence branch and the size and shape of the fruit. In this study, we provide a detailed description, illustrations, and photographs with a revised taxonomic key for identification of Sparganium species in Korea.

  • This study was made as a part of the benethic fauna of Geojedo Island. The material was obtained from 17 localities (Fig. 1) along the coastal sea of Geojedo Island and it's adjacent waters during the years 1995-1998. This paper includes 38 species from a limited area of the southern part of Korea and includes 13 previously known species by Rho(1975-1991). Of these Didemnum (D.) pardum, Symplegma oceania, and Styela coriacea, are new to the Korean fauna, and 22 species are newly added to the fauna of Geojedo Island. We provided taxonomic notes and brief notes on the ascidian fauna, and the biogeographical distribution of Geojedo island. Its ascidian fauna are characterized by a high percentage of 18(47.4%) warm-water species and the extreme scarcity of eight(21.1%) boreal-water forms. This result may be attributable to the fact that Geojedo island and its adajacent waters are located under the influence of the warm Kuroshio Current.

  • Jasminum attenuatum Roxb. ex G. Don, a species of Oleaceae, was recently found in Kon Ka Kinh National Park of Vietnam that represents a new record to the flora of the country. The plant can be differentiated from its allied species J. latipetalum C.B. Clarke and J. simplicifolium subsp. funale (Decne) Kiew by the shape of its leaf blade, in having 5-20 flowered inflorescence, linear bracts, and obconic and glabrous calyx with shorter lobes. The present study provides the species description, illustrations, micrographs by scanning electron microscope of the pollen grains, and important taxonomic notes. Furthermore, a comparison of the diagnostic characters between this species and the above mentioned related species is made.

  • Amanita subgenus Lepidella is a well-known group that includes lethal amanitas. However, the taxonomic investigation of Korean Amanita species is still in progress. In this study, we collected Amanita specimens in Korea from 2009 to 2015 and classified 22 of them as subgenus Lepidella based on the morphology. Phylogenetic analysis of the 22 Amanita specimens based on the internal transcribed spacers sequences identified 16 phylogenetic species which included three undescribed Amanita species (A. sepiacea, A. modesta and A. kotohiraensis). Microscopic features of newly recorded Amanita species were photographed and line drawings were made. All collections cited here are deposited in the Herbarium Conservation Center of the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences.
