  • In this paper, we propose a base address candidate selection method using the $gp register and page granularity as a way to build a static analysis environment for firmware based on MIPS architecture. As a way to shorten the base address search time, which is a disadvantage of the base address candidate selection method through inductive reasoning in existing studies, this study proposes a method to perform page-level search based on the $gp register in the existing base address candidate selection method as a reference point for search. Then, based on the proposed method, a base address search tool is implemented and a static analysis environment is constructed to prove the validity of the target tool. The results show that the proposed method is faster than the existing candidate selection method through inductive reasoning.

  • Based on plasmid display technology by the complexes of fusion protein and the encoding plasmid DNA, an in vitro selection method for high affinity DNA-binding protein was developed and experimentally demonstrated. The GAL4 DNA-binding domain (GAL4 DBD) was selected as a model DNA-binding protein, and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was used as an expression reporter for the selection of target proteins. Error prone PCR was conducted to construct a mutant library of the model. Based on the affinity decrease with increased salt concentration, mutants of GAL4 DBD having high affinity were selected from the mutant protein library of protein-encoding plasmid complex by this method. Two mutants of (Lys33Glu, Arg123Lys, Ile127Lys) and (Ser47Pro, Ser85Pro) having high affinity were obtained from the first generation mutants. This method can be used for rapid in vitro selection of high affinity DNA-binding proteins, and has high potential for the screening of high affinity DNA-binding proteins in a sequence-specific manner.

  • Using bearing measurement only, target motion state is not directly obtained so that TMA (Target Motion Analysis) is needed for this situation. TMA is a nonlinear estimation technique used in passive SONAR systems. Also it is the one of important techniques for underwater combat management systems. TMA can be divided to two parts: batch estimation and sequential estimation. It is preferable to use sequential estimation for reducing computational load as well as adaptively to target maneuvers, batch estimation is still required to attain target initial state vector for convergence of sequential estimation. Selection of batch time interval which depends on observability is critical in TMA performance. Batch estimation in general utilizes predetermined batch time interval. In this paper, we propose a new method called the BTIS (Batch Time Interval and Initial State Estimation). The proposed BTIS estimates target initial status and determines the batch time interval sequentially by using a bank of GMM-TS (Gaussian Mixture Measurement-Track Splitting) filters. The performance of the proposal method is verified by a Monte Carlo simulation study.

  • A robot must be able to generate various skills to achieve given tasks intelligently and reasonably. The robot must first learn affordances to generate the skills. An affordance is defined as qualities of objects or environments that induce actions. Affordances can be usefully used to generate skills. Most tasks require sequential and goal-oriented behaviors. However, it is usually difficult to accomplish such tasks with affordances alone. To accomplish such tasks, a skill is constructed with an affordance and a soft behavioral motivation switch for reflecting goal-oriented elements. A skill calculates a behavioral motivation as a combination of both presently perceived information and goal-oriented elements. Here, a behavioral motivation is the internal condition that activates a goal-oriented behavior. In addition, a robot must be able to execute sequential behaviors. We construct skill networks by using generated skills that make action selection feasible to accomplish a task. A robot can select sequential and a goal-oriented behaviors using the skill network. For this, we will first propose a method for modeling and learning Bayesian networks that are used to generate affordances. To select sequential and goal-oriented behaviors, we construct skills using affordances and soft behavioral motivation switches. We also propose a method to generate the skill networks using the skills to execute given tasks. Finally, we will propose action-selection-mechanism to select sequential and goal-oriented behaviors using the skill network. To demonstrate the validity of our proposed methods, "Searching-for-a-target-object", "Approaching-a-target-object", "Sniffing-a-target-object", and "Kicking-a-target-object" affordances have been learned with GENIBO (pet robot) based on the human teaching method. Some experiments have also been performed with GENIBO using the skills and the skill networks.

  • Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is becoming a standard method for invasive mediastinal staging and for the diagnosis of paratracheal and peribronchial lesions. It is essential to understand the technical aspects of EBUS-TBNA to ensure safe and efficient procedures. In this review, we discuss the practical aspects to be considered during EBUS-TBNA, including anesthesia, manipulation of equipment, understanding mediastinal ultrasound images, target selection, number of aspirations needed per target, sample handling, and complications.

  • A new filter algorithm is suggested improving structurally the conventional extended Kalman filter of which the performance is dependent on the selection of the reference axes, by use of line-of-sight axes and gain rotation technique. The implementation method using microcomputer which implements tracking Kalman filter is introduced in terms of hardware and software. Then, through the simulation the performance of suggested filter is compared with that of conventional extended Kalman filter and the possibility of the real time tracking of moving target is investigated.

  • Preload of critical engine bolts affects the performance and durability of engines. In modern engines that pursue higher power outputs and which are of lighter weight, it becomes more difficult to select an optimal target preload in consideration of various factors such as the role and structural characteristics of joint members, joint load, and fatigue durability of bolts and joint members. A procedure to select the bolt preload using computer-aided engineering technology, especially the finite element method, has been developed. The procedure is illustrated with connecting-rod bolts for which an appropriate preload is known. The selection criteria of target preload and the finite element modeling technique for connecting-rod bolts are also explained.

  • Many types of chemical data tend to be characterized by many measured variables on each of a few observations. In this situation, target concentration can be predicted using multivariate statistical modeling. However, it is necessary to use a few variables considering size and cost of instrumentation, for an example, for development of a portable biomedical instrument. This study presents, with a spectral data set of total hemoglobin in whole blood, the possibility that modeling using only a few variables can improve predictability compared to modeling using all of the variables. Predictability from the model using three wavelengths selected from all possible regression method was improved, compared to the model using whole spectra (whole spectra: SEP = 0.4 g/dL, 3-wavelengths: SEP=0.3 g/dL). It appears that the proper selection of variables can be more effective than using whole spectra for determining the hemoglobin concentration in whole blood.
