Recently, we often encounter water shortage problem due to drought during dry season. Although we have built dams and expanded our tap water system greatly to meet the increasing demand of water, this approach has its inherent limitation including environmental destruction in the course of the dam construction. Therefore, this paper is aimed to analyze the water recycling models developed in other countries and modify them to fit into our system. Also the water recycling system in Busan municipal area was analyzed to propose an alternative method for reusing the recycled water from wastewater treatment area.
We investigate sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) of trace copper (Cu) metal using pristine carbon nanotube (CNT) and acidified CNT (ACNT) electrodes. Squarewave based anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is used to determine the stripped Cu concentration. Prior to performing the SWASV measurements, its optimal conditions are determined and with that, effects of potential scan rate and $Cu^{2+}$ concentration on stripping current are evaluated. The measurements indicate that (1) ACNT electrode shows better results than CNT electrode and (2) stripping is controlled by surface reaction. In the given $Cu^{2+}$ concentration range of 25-150 ppb, peak stripping current has linearity with $Cu^{2+}$ concentration. Quantitatively, sensitivity and LOD of Cu in ACNT electrode are 9.36 ${\mu}A\;{\mu}M^{-1}$ and 3 ppb, while their values are 3.99 ${\mu}A\;{\mu}M^{-1}$ and 3 ppb with CNT electrode. We evaluate the effect of three different water solutions (deionized water, tap water and river water) on stripping current and the confirm types of water don't affect the sensitivity of Cu. It turns out by optical inspection and cyclic voltammetry that superiority of ACNT electrode to CNT electrode is attributed to exfoliation of CNT bundles and improved interfacial adhesion occurring during oxidation of CNTs.

The purpose of this study was to examine the quality characteristics of white pan bread according to the different types of water (tap water (still water), purified water, still water, light water, classical water, and bold water). Pan breads were statistically analyzed using texture profile analysis, fermentation, texture, suitability, image analysis, color, moisture content, and statistical analysis. This result will contribute to the commercialization of pan bread using various kinds of water. Ultimately, we analyzed the quality characteristics of various kinds of water, depending on the carbonic acid content on the dough and the pan bread, and to derive the optimum kinds and ratios of the water to be applied to the pan bread. As a result of the study, the best findings were obtained with water containing carbonic acid content more than the classical water according to overall characteristics, durability (Width of Tail and Integral), foot efficiency, softness, volume and preference check. Therefore, when white pan bread is produced by using water containing a carbonic acid content (5~7.5 mg/L) or more of the classical water, it affects the quality characteristics and a good obtains positive response to from consumers. In this study, the quality characteristics of pan bread based different kinds of water which were not available in the past, and the quality characteristics of pan bread, which can be used as the basic data for future research, were well analyzed.

Phthalate esters is recently considered as an environmental pollutant. This study investigated removal methods of phthalate esters in water environment. On tap water treatment condition with batch test, removal efficiency of coagulation precipitation of one oxidation were $26.6{\sim}33.8%$ and $10{\sim}15%$, respectively. Phthalate esters was effectively removed by the activated carbon adsorption process on tap water treatment condition. The operation of raw water with EBCT of 10 minutes on continuous process satisfied the standard of drinking water by the WHO and US EPA when the concentration of phthalate esters was $100\;{\mu}g/L$. On pilot plant test, coagulation precipitation process got $32{\sim}44%$ of removal efficiency, sand filtration process $6{\sim}10%$ and ozone oxidation process $8{\sim}10%$, respectively. DEP, DBP, BBP and DEHP were not detected after the raw water was processed with activated carbon. The actual survey of phthalate esters removal by advanced water treatment showed that $29{\sim}76%$, $3{\sim}29%$ and $17{\sim}22%$ of phthalate esters were removed on coagulation precipitation process, sand filtration and ozone oxidation process, respectively. DEP, DBP, BBP and DEHP were not detected after the raw water was processed with activated carbon.

Lead, a heavy metal widely employed in various industries, continues to pose a threat to both human health and the environment. Therefore, the development of a sensor capable of rapidly and accurately detecting lead(II) ions in real-time at contaminated sites is crucial. In this study, we have engineered a fluorescent sensor with the ability to efficiently detect lead(II) ions under actual environmental conditions, including tap water and freshwater. The compound, tetraphenylethylene carboxylic acid derivative (TPE-COOH), exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity toward lead(II) ions in aqueous solution, where the interaction between TPE-COOH and lead(II) ions leads to its aggregation, thus triggering a fluorescence "turn-on" based on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanism. Impressively, compound TPE-COOH proficiently detects lead(II) ions within a range of 30 to 100 𝜇M in tap water and freshwater, even in the presence of various interfering substances.
This paper examines the dynamics of environmental policy development in Korea by reviewing some of the ways on how the policy windows have been opened. There are a lot of theoretical arguments about the major factors influencing policy development or changes. Many scholars have believed that severe pollution accidents or salient environmental episodes might have been the main motivation of environmental policy development. This line of argument seems valid, especially with the water pollution control policy in Korea. Water pollution control programs had rapidly expanded along with the series of water pollution accidents in the tap water sources from the late 1980s to mid-1990s. However, regarding other major env. issues, various other factors have played more important roles in the development of the relevant policies. In case of air pollution control policy international sport events such as, 1986 Asian Games, 1988 Summer Olympics, and 2002 World Cup Competition, have contributed for the development. The municipal solid waste management policy partly owed its development to the introduction of local autonomy system in the mid-1990s. Even the foreign currency crisis occurring in December 1997 helped the policy paradigm shift from rigid supply-oriented to soft demand-oriented approaches. After closely looking at the dynamics of environmental policy development in Korea, this paper tries to identify the logical background of the observed outcomes.
In this study, total organic carbon (TOC) and potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$) demand were examined for raw and finished tap water and the range of $KMnO_4$ demand in drinking water was investigated. By analyzing the relationship between TOC and $KMnO_4$ demand, the applicability of TOC as a drinking water standard and its regulation level was proposed. The average $KMnO_4$ demand was 1.3 mg/L in 4,638 samples from finished drinking water, tap water and finished water from small facilities. $KMnO_4$ demand of 95% of samples was 2.9 mg/L which was 29% of the drinking water standard (10 mg/L). At 12 major drinking water treatment plants, the average $KMnO_4$ demand in July and August was 8.1 and 2.4 mg/L for raw and finished water, respectively. TOC in July and August was 2.0 and 1.15 mg/L for raw and finished water, respectively. The correlation coefficient between $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC was as high as 0.8 in both raw and finished water and $KMnO_4$ demand was twice of TOC in finished water. Because the correlation coefficient and ratio between $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC varied according to season and the characteristics of raw water, it would be difficult to establish TOC standard just from the ratio of $KMnO_4$ demand to TOC. However, it is possible to set the TOC range based on the accumulated $KMnO_4$ demand data or from the satisfactory correlation results. Then, it would be reasonable to establish TOC standard level as 4 ~ 5 mg/L.
The present study was conducted to assess the suitability of domestic natural waters as a Daphnia magna culture medium. In order to assess survival rate and reproductive output, young female daphnids (parent animals), aged less than 24 hours at the start of the test and produced in the Elendt M4 medium, were exposed to Elendt M4 medium, de-chlorinated tap water, and natural mineral water for 21 days. D. magna cultured in Elendt M4 medium (reference medium) and natural mineral water met the criteria of OECD No. 211, Daphnia magna Reproduction Test Guidelines in terms of percent adult survival, first day of reproduction, and average young production. However, the mortalities of adult daphnids observed in de-chlorinated tap water were more than 20% in two reproduction tests for 21 days. Mortality was observed on exposure days 13, 15, and 18 in de-chlorinated water. The use of D. magna is recommended in water of hardness >80 mg $CaCO_3\;L^{-1}$. However, the hardness of de-chlorinated tap water used in the present study was 50~53 mg $CaCO_3\;L^{-1}$. Therefore, it is judged that the delayed mortalities observed in de-chlorinated tap water were caused by a rapid decreased in hardness when the medium was changed from Elendt M4 to de-chlorinated tap water. When D. magna is cultured using domestic natural waters (underground water, surface water, and de-chlorinated water), the quality-control (QC) data should be maintained through a standardization for health assessment method, toxicity test method using reference chemical, test intervals of reference toxicant toxicity test, and data treatment and interpretation. In the long term, national research programs are needed for the development of test species which are representative of domestic aquatic environmental conditions among indigenous daphnids.

An acid forest surface soil as a land farming medium was treated with a water plant alum sludge at 0 to 18%. Indian mustard was grown in the treated soil in a greenhouse for 5 weeks and watered with pH 4 tap water adjusted with a mixed acid (1HNO$_3$: 2H$_2$SO$_4$) during plant growth. Changes in soil property, leachate chemistry, plant growth, and plant uptake of elements by the sludge treatment were determined. The alum sludge treatment increased buffer capacity to acidity, hydraulic conductivity, water holding capacity, and phosphate adsorption of the soil and decreased bulk density and mobility of small particles. The sludge treatment reduced leaching of Al, Mg, K, Na, and root elongation. Plant did uptake less amount of the cations and P but more Ca with the sludge treatment.
An artificial recharge test aimed at investigating transport characteristics of the injected water plume in a fractured rock aquifer was conducted. The test used an injection well for injecting tap water whose temperature and electrical conductivity were different from the groundwater. Temporal and depth-wise variation of temperature and electrical conductivity was monitored in both the injection well and a nearby observation well. A highly permeable fracture zone acting as the major pathway of groundwater flow was distinctively revealed in the monitoring data. A finite element subsurface flow and transport simulator (FEFLOW) was used to investigate sensitivity of the transport process to associated aquifer parameters. Simulated results showed that aperture thickness of the fracture and the hydraulic gradient of groundwater highly affected spatio-temporal variation of temperature and electrical conductivity of the injected water plume. The study suggests that artificial recharge of colder water in a fractured rock aquifer could create a thermal plume persistent over a long period of time depending on hydro-thermal properties of the aquifer as well as the amount of injected water.
