In this study the water including sediment is assumed that the density is different from fresh water. And the phenomenon inhaled by low pressure around the pipe is numerically simulated in two dimension. The simulation is done using finite difference method in rectangular staggered mesh system and Navier-Stokes equations and continuty equation are employed as governing equations. The method of Irregular leg lengths and stars are adopted to satisfy boundary condition of body boundary. Marker-Density method is used to calculate the density of mixed flow. Also SGS turbulence model is applied to consider vortex smaller then grid at high Renolds number. This study is to analyze inhalation phenomenon of mixed flow with sediment and to verify the numerical method for mixed flow. To verify the numerical results are compared with experimental results
Piezoelectric materials produce an electric field by deformation, and deform when subjected to an electric field. The coupling nature of piezoelectric materials has acquired wide applications in electric-mechanical and electric devices, including electric-mechanical actuators, sensors and structures. In this paper, a hollow sphere composed of a radially polarized spherically anisotropic piezoelectric material, e.g., PZT_5 or (Pb) (CoW) $TiO_3$ under internal or external uniform pressure and a constant potential difference between its inner and outer surfaces or combination of these loadings has been studied. Electrodes attached to the inner and outer surfaces of the sphere induce the potential difference. The governing equilibrium equations in radially polarized form are shown to reduce to a coupled system of second-order ordinary differential equations for the radial displacement and electric potential field. These differential equations are solved analytically for seven different sets of boundary conditions. The stress and the electric potential distributions in the sphere are discussed in detail for two piezoceramics, namely PZT _5 and (Pb) (CoW) $TiO_3$. It is shown that the hoop stresses in hollow sphere composed of these materials can be made virtually uniform across the thickness of the sphere by applying an appropriate set of boundary conditions.
This paper presents a new difference scheme for numerical solution of stiff system of ODE’s. The present study is mainly motivated to develop an absolutely stable numerical method with a high order of approximation. In this work a double implicit A-stable difference scheme with the sixth order of approximation is suggested. Another purpose of this study is to introduce automatic choice of the integration step size of the difference scheme which is derived from the proposed scheme and the one step scheme of the fourth order of approximation. The algorithm was tested by means of solving the Kreiss problem and a chemical kinetics problem. The behavior of the gas explosive mixture (H₂+ O₂) in a closed space with a mobile piston is considered in test problem 2. It is our conclusion that a hydrogen-operated engine will permit to decrease the emitted levels of hazardous atmospheric pollutants.
An analytic axial xenon oscillation model was developed for pressurized water reactor analysis. The model employs an equation system for axial difference parameters that was derived from the two-group one-dimensional diffusion equation with control rod modeling and coupled with xenon and iodine balance equations. The spatial distributions of nu, xenon, and iodine were expanded by the Fourier sine series, resulting in cancellation of the flux-xenon coupled non-linearity. An inhomogeneous differential equation system for the axial difference parameters, which gives the relationship between power, iodine and xenon axial differences in the case of control rod movement, was derived and solved analytically. The analytic solution of the axial difference parameters can directly provide with the variation of axial power difference during xenon oscillation. The accuracy of the model is verified by benchmark calculations with one-dimensional reference core calculations.
Korea National Forest Inventory System has been adopting different cluster plot design and new equations to estimate growing stock volumes since 2006. These changes have resulted in volume estimations which show some difference from previous ones. This study is to find out the source of such difference. For this, relevant data was collected from 80 plots of 20 cluster samples according to the cluster plot design applied to 4th and 5th National Forest Inventory. Then growing stock volumes were estimated by using current and previous individual tree volume equations respectively. An investigation was made to detect whether such difference in volume estimates was originated from the changes in cluster plot design or from using different volume equations. T-test results showed that the difference from changes in cluster plot design was negligible. Instead, changes in volume equations had statistically significant effects in volume estimation. Since the volume estimation by the 5th National Forest Inventory would bring overestimation by applying different volume equations, all the volume estimations made prior to 2006 would require necessary modifications for international reporting.
A numerical study has been peformed to investigate the flow and mixing characteristics of a chemical injection tank in the chemical and volume control system (CVCS) of Yonggwang 5&6 (YGN 5&6). This study was undertaken to provide a basis for modification of the previous design (YGN 3&4) which gave a lot of difficulties in installation and operation of the chemical injection system during the start-up test because it needs a special reciprocating pump with a high actual head. For the tank of length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) of 1,2 and 3, each with and without a baffle inside, calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady laminar two-dimensional elliptic forms of governing equations for the mass, momentum and species concentration. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretized equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm, which was developed based on the staggered grid control volume, was employed for the calculation procedure. Results showed that the baffle is very effective in enhancing the mixing in the tank and that a baffle should be installed near the tank entrance in order to 110 chemicals into the reactor coolant system (RCS) within the operating time required.
Many direct integration methods are used for numerical analyses of dynamic motion. In these methods, the governing equations of a dynamic system are integrated successively using a step-by-step numerical integration procedure. Time derivatives in the equations are generally approximated using difference formulas involving one or more increments of the time. Time increment has closely relationship with the accuracy of the motion analysis. In this paper, a 4th order Houbolt direct integration method is derived. For a spring-mass system, the motion of the system are analyzed from the 3rd order Houbolt and the 4th order Houbolt approaches respectively. Finally the paper proposes the optimal time-increment based on the accuracy of numerical analyses.
A systematic numerical comparative study of the performance of semicircular and rectangular submerged breakwaters interacting with solitary waves is the basis of this paper. To accomplish this task, Nwogu's extended Boussinesq model equations are employed to simulate the interaction of the wave with breakwaters. The finite difference technique has been used to discretize the spatial terms while a fourth-order predictor-corrector method is employed for time discretization in our numerical model. The proposed computational scheme uses a staggered-grid system where the first-order spatial derivatives have been discretized with fourth-order accuracy. For validation purposes, five test cases are considered and numerical results have been successfully compared with the existing analytical and experimental results. The performances of the rectangular and semicircular breakwaters have been examined in terms of the wave reflection, transmission, and dissipation coefficients (RTD coefficients) denoted by KR, KT, KD. The latter coefficient KD emerges due to the non-energy conserving KR and KT. Our computational results and graphical illustrations show that the rectangular breakwater has higher reflection coefficients than semicircular breakwater for a fixed crest height, but as the wave height increases, the two reflection coefficients approach each other. un the other hand, the rectangular breakwater has larger dissipation coefficients compared to that of the semicircular breakwater and the difference between them increases as the height of the crest increases. However, the transmission coefficient for the semicircular breakwater is greater than that of the rectangular breakwater and the difference in their transmission coefficients increases with the crest height. Quantitatively, for rectangular breakwaters the reflection coefficients KR are 5-15% higher while the diffusion coefficients KD are 3-23% higher than that for the semicircular breakwaters, respectively. The transmission coefficients KT for rectangular breakwater shows the better performance up to 2.47% than that for the semicircular breakwaters. Based on our computational results, one may conclude that the rectangular breakwater has a better overall performance than the semicircular breakwater. Although the model equations are non-dissipative, the non-energy conserving transmission and reflection coefficients due to wave-breakwater interactions lead to dissipation type contribution.

Parabolized stability equations for compressible flows in general curvilinear coordinate system are derived to deal with a broad range of transition prediction problems on complex geometry. A highly accurate finite difference PSE code has been developed using an implicit marching procedure. Compressible and incompressible flat plate flow stability under two-dimensional and three¬dimensional disturbances has been investigated to test the present code. Results of the present computation are found to be in good agreement with the multiple scale analysis and DNS data. Stability calculation results by the present PSE code for compressible boundary layer at Mach numbers ranging from 0.02 to 1.5 are also presented and are again seen to be as accurate as the spectral method.
This paper presents responses of the free end of a cantilever micro beam under the effect of an impact force based on the modified couple stress theory. The beam is excited by a transverse triangular force impulse modulated by a harmonic motion. The Kelvin-Voigt model for the material of the beam is used. The considered problem is investigated within the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory by using energy based finite element method. The system of equations of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equations. The obtained system of linear differential equations is reduced to a linear algebraic equation system and solved in the time domain by using Newmark average acceleration method. In the study, the difference of the modified couple stress theory and the classical beam theory is investigated for the wave propagation. A few of the obtained results are compared with the previously published results. The influences of the material length scale parameter on the wave propagation are investigated in detail. It is clearly seen from the results that the classical beam theory based on the modified couple stress theory must be used instead of the classical theory for small values of beam height.
