Purpose: This study proposes a process for evaluating the preventive maintenance policy for a system with degradation characteristics and for calculating the appropriate preventive maintenance cycle using time- and condition-based maintenance. Methods: First, the collected data is divided into the maintenance history lifetime and degradation lifetime, and analysis datasets are extracted through preprocessing. Particle filter algorithm is used to estimate the degradation lifetime from analysis datasets and prior information is obtained using LSE. The suitability and cost of the existing preventive maintenance policy are each evaluated based on the degradation lifetime and by using a minimum repair block replacement model of time-based maintenance. Results: The process is applied to the degradation of the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane in a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant to evaluate the existing preventive maintenance policy. Conclusion: This method can be used for facilities or systems that undergo degradation, which can be evaluated in terms of cost and time. The method is expected to be used in decision-making for devising the optimal preventive maintenance policy.

Estimations of the parameters included in a two-component system are derived based on masked system life test data, when the probability of masking depends upon the exact cause of system failure. Also estimations of reliability for the individual components at a specified mission time are derived. Maximum likelihood and Bayes methods are used to derive these estimators. The problem is explained on a series system consisting of two independent components each of which has a Pareto distributed lifetime. Further we present numerical studies using simulation.
In other to interpret the long-term variations of sunshine duration, cloud lifetime, and precipitation intensity observed in and around Seoul and Busan for the period from 1986 to 2005, aerosol indirect effect was employed and applied. For the identification of long-term trend of aerosol concentration, observed visibility and AOT of AERONET sunphotometer data were also used over the same regions. The result showed that the time series of visibility was decreased and those of AOT increased, especially trends were remarkable in 2000s. In both regions, occurrence frequencies of observed cloudiness (cloud amount ${\leq}6/10$) and strong precipitation (rain rate > $0.5mmhour^{-1}$) have been steadily increased while those of cloudiness (cloud amount > 7/10) and weak precipitation (rain rate ${\leq}0.2mmhour^{-1}$) decreased. These results are corresponding to the trend of both visibility and AERONET data, implying the aerosol indirect effect that makes size of cloud droplet reduce, cloud life-time longer and precipitation efficiency decreased. Our findings demonstrate that, although these phenomena are not highly significant, weather and climate system over Korean urban area have been changed toward longer lifetime of small cloudiness and increasing precipitation intensity as a result of increased aerosol indirect effect.

This paper presents an overview of environmental evaluation for a photovoltaic-fuel cell hybrid power plant through the Ideal Point approach, which is one of multiobjective decision support systems. Its evaluation is carried out in terms of such tow criteria as land requirement for plant construction and lifetime CO2 emissions, and ten compared with conventional fossil fuel power plants. Fuel cell power system has been proven a viable technology to back up severe PV power fluctuations under inclement weather conditions. Fuel cell power generation, containing small land use, is able to alleviate the heavy burden of large surface requirement of PV power plants. In addition, the PV-fuel cell hybrid power system shows a very little potential for lifetime CO2 emissions.
The transmission of tracked vehicles performs complex functions as steering, shifting, braking, etc. and the system level life time has been a key influenced by the number of sub-parts like as gear assembly, torque converter, clutches, bearings and so on. In particular, the mechanical type steering system in tracked vehicle has impact shock torques in steering shift and those kind of shock torques can effect on the durability of many sub-parts in power train system. The field failure modes of gear assembly, steering assembly and the bearings of output shaft appear as a very complex phenomenon. In this study, the actual failure, which may occur in field, of the transmission was investigated comprehensively and that the endurance test on the resulting output shaft bearing failure analysis and life assessment was performed. Life time test method used in this study, developed for the purpose of the internal usage, and under these testing techniques the impact of the each bearing damage, which used in tracked vehicle transmission left / right outputs of different structures, was analyzed.

Several authentication methods have been developed to make use of tokens in the mobile networks and smart payment systems. Token used in smart payment system is genearated in place of Primary Account Number. The use of token in each payment transaction is advantageous because the token authentication prevents enemy from intercepting credit card number over the network. Existing token authentication methods work together with the cryptogram, which is computed using the shared key that is provisioned by the token service provider. Long lifetime and repeated use of shared key cause potential brawback related to its vulnerability against the brute-force attack. This paper proposes a per-transaction shared key mechanism, where the per-transaction key is agreed between the mobile device and token service provider for each smart payment transaction. From server viewpoint, per-transaction key list is easy to handle because the per-transaction key has short lifetime below a couple of seconds and the server does not need to maintain the state for the mobile device. We analyze the optimum size of the per-transaction shared key which satisfy the requirements for transaction latency and security strength for secure payment transactions.
Sensor networks applications can be employed by a vast range of applications. Environmental information monitoring systems and ecosystem surveillance are representative application using sensor networks. But, limited battery capacity of sensor node is a key feature that determines lifetime of networks and system. It also affects quality of collected data. We recognized factors that affects lifetime of environment sensor nodes through the experiment of environment information system deployed over campus. We will show useful proposals for future construction of sensor network application systems.
In the last decade, wireless sensor networks have emerged as a promising technology that could accelerate progress in the field of structural monitoring. The main advantages of wireless sensor networks compared to conventional monitoring technologies are fast deployment, small interference with the surroundings, self-organization, flexibility and scalability. These features could enable mass application of monitoring systems, even on smaller structures. However, since wireless sensor network nodes are battery powered and data communication is the most energy consuming task, transferring all the acquired raw data through the network would dramatically limit system lifetime. Hence, data reduction has to be achieved at the node level in order to meet the system lifetime requirements of real life applications. The objective of this paper is to discuss some general aspects of data processing and management in monitoring systems based on wireless sensor networks, to present a prototype monitoring system for civil engineering structures, and to illustrate long-term field test results.
Diffusion of information technology such as internet has brought a great influence on modern society and industrial development. Currently wide-spread RFID/USN technology has become a central momentum of this rapid changes for the establishment of ubiquitous society in the future. Historically agricultural products has drawn research interest due to its importance of human life. A standard monitoring system throughout of life cycle of the agricultural products should be developed and careful monitoring process should be introduced. In this paper, by way of case study, current lifetime tracing systems are evaluated and critical drawbacks and issues are also developed. In addition, some implications and guidelines to improve the tracing performance of the products are also suggested.

Recently, the number of automotive electrical and electronic system has been increased because the requirements for the convenience and safety of the drivers and passengers are raised. In most cases, the data for controlling the various sensors and automotive electrical and electronic system used in runtime should be stored on the internal or external non-volatile memory of the ECU(Electronic Control Units). However, the non-volatile memory has a constraint with write limitation due to the hardware characteristics. The limitation causes fatal accidents or unexpected results if the non-volatile memory is not managed. In this paper, we propose a management scheme for using non-volatile memory to prolong the writing times based on AUTOSAR(AUTOmotive Open System Architecture) platform. Our proposal is implemented on the CDD(Complex Device Driver) and uses an algorithm which swaps a frequently modified block for a least modified block. Through the development of the prototype, the proposed scheme extends the lifetime of non-volatile memory about 1.08 to 2.48 times than simply using the AUTOSAR standard.
