  • In this research, the buckling analysis of sandwich beam with composite reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs) in two face sheets is investigated. Three type various porosity patterns including uniform, symmetric and asymmetric are considered through the thickness direction of the core. Also, the top and bottom face sheets layers are considered composite reinforced by GPLs/CNTs based on Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model and extended mixture rule, respectively. Based on various shear deformation theories such as Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko and Reddy beam theories, the governing equations of equilibrium using minimum total potential energy are obtained. It is seen that the critical buckling load decreases with an increase in the porous coefficient, because the stiffness of sandwich beam reduces. Also, it is shown that the critical buckling load for asymmetric distribution is lower than the other cases. It can see that the effect of graphene platelets on the critical buckling load is higher than carbon nanotubes. Moreover, it is seen that the difference between carbon nanotubes and graphene platelets for Reddy and Euler-Bernoulli beam theories is most and least, respectively.

  • Finite element model is established for the simulation of groundwater flow due to water curtain around underground oil storage Choleski decomposition method. The symmetric global conductance matrix is solved by vector storage Choleski decomposition method. The model is verified through comparison with the results of electric analogy. For the application of this model to real site, the finite element meshes are constructed according to representative vertical cross and longitudinal sections. In cross-sectional analysis, potential and flow distributions are compared based on the cavern pressure and horizontal water curtain. For longitudinal section, effects between nearly located caverns with or without vertical water curtain are analyzed. These results prove that the established model can be used as a tool for flow analysis around underground caverns.

  • Two turbulent jet with different sinusoidal nozzle exit configurations of in-phase and $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase were investigated experimentally using a smoke-wire method and a hot-wire anemometry. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured at several downstream locations under $Re_D\;=\;5000$. For the case of in-phase nozzle configuration, the length of potential core exhibits negligible difference with respect to the transverse locations (0, $\lambda/4$ and $\lambda/2$), similar to that of a plane jet. On the other hand, a maximum difference of 30% in the potential-core length occurs for the $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase configuration. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities also show significant difference for the nozzle of $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase, whereas non-symmetric distribution is observed in the near-exit region(x/D = 1) for the in-phase sinusoidal nozzle jet. Compared to a slit planc jet, the sinusoidal nozzle jets seem to suppress the velocity deficit as the flow goes downstream. The sinusoidal nozzle jet was found to decrease turbulent intensity dramatically. The flow visualization results show that the flow characteristics of the sinusoidal nozzle jet are quite different from those of the slit plane jet.

  • Coordinated multi-point transmission (CoMP) techniques are being touted as enabling technologies for interference mitigation in next generation heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets). In this paper, we present a comparative performance study of uplink (UL) CoMP algorithms for the 3GPP LTE HetNets. Focusing on a distributed and functionally-split architecture, we consider six distinct UL-CoMP algorithms: 1. Joint reception in the frequency-domain (JRFD) 2. Two-stage equalization (TSEQ) 3. Log-likelihood ratio exchange (LLR-E) 4. Symmetric TSEQ (S-TSEQ) 5. Transport block selection diversity (TBSD) 6. Coordinated scheduling with adaptive interference mitigation (CS-AIM) where JRFD, TSEQ, S-TSEQ, TBSD and CS-AIM are our main contributions in this paper, and quantify their relative performances via the post-processing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio distributions. We also compare the CoMP-specific front-haul rate requirements for all the schemes considered in this paper. Our results indicate that, with a linear minimum mean-square error receiver, the JRFD and TSEQ have identical performances, whereas S-TSEQ relaxes the front-haul latency requirements while approaching the performance of TSEQ. Furthermore, in a HetNet environment, we find that CS-AIM provides an attractive alternative to TBSD and LLR-E with a significantly reduced CoMP-specific front-haul rate requirement.

  • We find the vectorial solution of the optical waveguide with semicircular cross-section by expanding the electromagnetic fields of the waveguide into the series of trigonometric and Bessel funtions and by applying the boundary conditions at the finitely selected points on the interface of the core and the cladding. We find also the propagation constants and the energy distributions of the eigenmodes and discuss its properties. As a result of computation, we find that the electromagnetic fields of the even modes about the symmetric axis of the semircular shape are nearly the same as those of the odd modes except that E and H of the odd modes are replaced by -H and E and that the even and odd modes are degenerated as the ratio of refractive index of the core and cladding approaches to 1.

  • Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) is performed for developing turbulent flow of the $270^{\circ}$ curved duct at a Reynolds number of 56,690. The curvature ratio on the basis of a centric radius $R_c$ and a duct height H is 3.357. Turbulence models adopted are k-$\omega$ model for Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation Simulation and Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for DES. DES is used as the hybrid computation technique combined with RANS-SST and Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Predicted results are compared with measured results including the distributions of Reynolds stresses and the flow characteristics on the symmetric plane of curved duct are presented. Judging from the comparison between the predicted and the measured results, the DES approach is applicable to calculate the developing turbulent flow in a $270^{\circ}$ curved duct.

  • This paper deals with free vibration analysis of non-uniform column resting on elastic foundations and subjected to follower force at its free end. The internal pores and graphene platelets (GPLs) are distributed in the matrix according to different patterns. The model is proposed with material parameters varying in the thickness of column to achieve graded distributions in both porosity and nanofillers. The elastic modulus of the nanocomposite is obtained by using Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model. The differential quadrature method as an efficient and accurate numerical approach is used to discretize the governing equations and to implement the boundary conditions. It is observed that the maximum vibration frequency obtained in the case of symmetric porosity and GPL distribution, while the minimum vibration frequency is obtained using uniform porosity distribution. Results show that for better understanding of mechanical behavior of nanocomposite column, it is crucial to consider porosities inside the material structure.

  • This research examines the effect of positively skewed population distribution on the two sample t-test through simulation. For simulation work, two independent samples were selected from the same chi-square distributions with 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 degrees of freedom and sample sizes 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, respectively. Chi-square distribution is largely skewed to the right at small degrees of freedom and getting symmetric as the degrees of freedom increase. Simulation results show that the sampled populations are distributed positively skewed like chi-square distribution with small degrees of freedom, the F-test for the equality of variances shows poor performances even at the relatively large degrees of freedom and sample sizes like 30 for both, and so it is recommended to avoid using F-test. When two population variances are equal, the skewness of population distribution does not affect on the t-test in terms of the confidence level. However even though for the highly positively skewed distribution and small sample sizes like three or five the t-test achieved the nominal confidence level, the error limits are very large at small sample size. Therefore, if the sampled population is expected to be highly skewed to the right, it will be recommended to use relatively large sample size, at least 20.

  • In this paper, the problem of interfacial stresses in damaged reinforced concrete beams strengthened with bonded prestressed functionally graded material plate and subjected to a uniformly distributed load, arbitrarily positioned single point load, or two symmetric point loads is developed using linear elastic theory. The adopted model takes into account the adherend shear deformations by assuming a linear shear stress through the depth of the damaged RC beam. This solution is intended for application to beams made of all kinds of materials bonded with a thin FGM plate. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the functionally graded material plate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. Finally, numerical comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters of the beams on the distributions of the interfacial stresses.

  • In this study, three airfoil families, NACA, FX and S, in each case three from each series with different shapes were investigated at different angles of attack using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. To verify the CFD model, simulation results of the NACA 0012 airfoil was compared against the available experimental data and k-ω SST was used as the turbulence model. Lift coefficients, lift to drag ratios and pressure distributions around airfoils were obtained from the CFD simulations and compared each other. The simulations were performed at three Reynolds numbers, Re=2×105, 1×106and 2×106, and angle of attack was varied between -6 and 12 degrees. According to the results, similar lift coefficient values were obtained for symmetric airfoils reaching their maximum values at similar angles of attack. Maximum lift coefficients were obtained for FX 60-157 and S 4110 airfoils having lift coefficient values around 1.5 at Re=1×106 and 12 degrees of angle of attack. Flow separation occurred close to the leading edge of some airfoils at higher angles of attack, while some other airfoils were more successful in keeping the flow attached on the surface.
