An experimental study is performed for turbulent swirling flow behind a circular cylinder using 2-D PIV technique. The Reynolds number investigated are 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 and 25,000. The mean velocity vector, time mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress behind the cylinder are measured before and behind the round cylinder along the test tube. A comparison is included with non swirl flow behind a circular and square cylinder. The recirculation zones are showed asymmetric profiles.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency and the prediction accuracy of developed large eddy simulation (LES) program for complex turbulent flows, such as recirculating and swirling flows. To save the computational cost, a Beowulf cluster system consisting 16 processors was constructed. The flows in backward-facing step and dump combustor were examined as representative recirculating and swirling flows. Firstly, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) for laminar backward-facing step flows was previously conducted to validate the overall performance of program. Then LES was carried out for turbulent backward-facing step flows. The results of laminar flow showed a qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulations and experiments. The simulations of the turbulent flow also showed reasonable results. Secondly, LES results for non-swirling and swirling flows in a dump combustor were compared with the results of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) using standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The results show that LES has a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, comer recirculation zone (CRZ) and center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) than those of RANS. Finally, it was examined the capability of LES for the description of unsteady phenomena.
Swirling flows have commonly used for a number of years for the stabilization of high- intensity combustion processes. In general, these swirling flows are poorly understood because of their complexity. This paper, therefore, deals with the experimental study on turbulent diffusion flames with swirling flow in unburned flow field by using a model combustor. The purpose of this study is to investigate quantitatively the swirling air jets issuing from vane swirlers. The fundamental experiments have been performed for the local velocity distribution, turbulence intensity and Schlieren photograph in th jets issuing into the atmosphere.

To overcome weak poinks of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model when applied to complex turbulent flows, various modified models were proposed. But their effects are confined to special flow fields. They have still some problems. Recently, an anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was also proposed to solve the drawback of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. This study is concentrated on the evaluation of the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model by the analysis of axisymmetric swirling turbulent flow. Results show that the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model has scarecely the fundamentally physical mechanism of predicting the swirling structure of flow.
This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.
The turbulent swirling flow field characteristics of a gun-type gas burner with a combustion chamber were investigated under the cold flow condition. The velocities and turbulent quantities were measured by hot-wire anemometer system with an X-type probe. The turbulent swirling flow field in the edge of a jet seems to cause a recirculation flow from downstream to upstream due to the unbalance of static pressure between a main jet flow and a chamber wall. Moreover, because the recirculation flow seems to expand the main jet flow to the radial and to shorten it to the axial, the turbulent swirling flow field with a chamber increases a radial momentum but decreases an axial as compared with the case without a chamber from the range of about X/R=1.5. As a result, these phenomena can be seen through all mean velocities, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent shear stresses. All physical quantities obtained around the slits, however, show the similar magnitude and profiles as the case without a chamber within the range of about X/R=1.0.

The objective of this study is to clarify the occurrence of the high-speed mode of unsteady swirling flows in straight tubes. The unsteady flows generated in the tube were measured by means of a semiconductor-type pressure transducer and an FFT analyzer. The high-speed mode measured has rotational speed which is approximately equal to or higher than the peripheral velocity of the swirling flow. The unsteady flow is due to cell rotation in the circumferential direction of the tube. The occurrence of the high-speed mode was confirmed, and the characteristics (rotational speed, pressure amplitude, and phase) of this mode were clarified. In order to understand the measured unsteady flows, the three dimensional vortex core profiles were discussed based on the distributions of the pressure amplitude and phase.

The flow in the draft tube cone of Francis turbines operated at partial discharge is a complex hydrodynamic phenomenon where an incoming steady axisymmetric swirling flow evolves into a three-dimensional unsteady flow field with precessing helical vortex (also called vortex rope) and associated pressure fluctuations. The paper addresses the following fundamental question: is it possible to compute the circumferentially averaged flow field induced by the precessing vortex rope by using an axisymmetric turbulent swirling flow model? In other words, instead of averaging the measured or computed 3D velocity and pressure fields we would like to solve directly the circumferentially averaged governing equations. As a result, one could use a 2D axi-symmetric model instead of the full 3D flow simulation, with huge savings in both computing time and resources. In order to answer this question we first compute the axisymmetric turbulent swirling flow using available solvers by introducing a stagnant region model (SRM), essentially enforcing a unidirectional circumferentially averaged meridian flow as suggested by the experimental data. Numerical results obtained with both models are compared against measured axial and circumferential velocity profiles, as well as for the vortex rope location. Although the circumferentially averaged flow field cannot capture the unsteadiness of the 3D flow, it can be reliably used for further stability analysis, as well as for assessing and optimizing various techniques to stabilize the swirling flow. In particular, the methodology presented and validated in this paper is particularly useful in optimizing the blade design in order to reduce the stagnant region extent, thus mitigating the vortex rope and expending the operating range for Francis turbines.

The swirling flow in the draft tube of a Francis turbine can cause the flow instability and the cavitation surge and has a larger influence on hydraulic power operating system. In this paper, the cavitating flow with swirling flow in the diffuser was studied by the draft tube component experiment, the model Francis turbine experiment and the numerical simulation. In the component experiment, several types of fluctuations were observed, including the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour by the swirling flow. While the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour were suppressed by the aeration into the diffuser, the loss coefficient in the diffuser increased by the aeration. In the model turbine test the aeration decreased the efficiency of the model turbine by several percent. In the numerical simulation, the cavitating flow was studied using Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) with particular emphasis on understanding the unsteady characteristics of the vortex rope structure. The generation and evolution of the vortex rope structures have been investigated throughout the diffuser using the iso-surface of vapor volume fraction. The pressure fluctuation in the diffuser by numerical simulation confirmed the cavitation surge observed in the experiment. Finally, this pressure fluctuation of the cavitation surge was examined and interpreted by CFD.

During the past three or four decades, the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow have been studied extensively because of their scientific and academic importance. This research deal with the periodic flow oscillation with and without swirling flow in a 180 degree circular tube using hot wire anemometry, microphone and accelerometer. The frequency regions are observed through the structured oscillation from spectrum. This work carried out to measure the sound level by using hot wire anemometry, microphone and accelerometer for each Reynolds number, $6{\times}10^4$, $8{\times}10^4$ and $1{\times}10^5$ respectively at the entry of the test tube with and without swirl flow.
