Polymers have been one of the emerging biomedical materials in the area of biomedical research which are applicable to the human body. For human applications, noninvasive characterization of the biomedical polymers has been one of the important topics, and is valuable information. Among others, the swelling rate is one of the important measurements needed for the hydrophilic polymers. NMR imaging has been a suitable method for the noninvasive study of such a material since it is sensitive to many physical and biochemical changes of the specimens. In addition, NMR techniques possess many useful intrinsic properties such as the relaxation and diffusion effects. The present study has provided a noble and noninvasive method of measuring the process of swelling as well as volumetric changes occurred in polymers and drug delivery processes in a drug delivery system (DDS) together with changes of released drug. This gives information, relating with both water ingress process, volumetric changes of polymer specimens and the visualization of sequential drug delivery process. Also, this study provides more reliable method to ascertain the time dependent swelling process compared to the conventional method. The important aspects is that the proposed method is truly noninvasive and is able to ascertain time dependent processes.
The short and variabke transit of drug throught GI tracj and the inter-and intra-subject variations of the transit restrict the sustained drug absorption after oral adminstration. These restrictions may be solved by retaining the dosage forms in the stomach. Then the dosage form will act as a platform which releases the drug slowly and makes the GI absorption occur for a long time. In this study, as the platforms, PVP hydrogels were synthesized by chemical and y-irradiation method in the cylindrical test tube. The chemical method means the synthesis of the hydrogel by heating the mixed solution of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone [monomer], acrylated albumin [crosslinking agent], 2, 2'-agobis(2-methylpropionitrile) [initiator] and proxyphylline [drug] at $65^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr. The $\gamma$-irradiation method means the synthesis of the hydrogel by irradiation with $^{60}$ Co $\gamma$-ray of the mixed solution of the monomer, acrylated albumin, and flurbiprofen [drug] at room temperature with total 0.2 Mrad for 3 hr. Our intention is to design the hydrogel tablet (diameter : 1.20 cm, thickness : 0.60 cm) which swells in the gastric fluid after oral administration to such a size that passing through the pylorus could be inhibited during the period of drug release. After releasing drug, the hydrogel should be degraded by the enzymeatic digestion in the stomach, or by hydrolysis and eventually solubilized. Thus, in votro tests were performed to examine the factors that affect swelling and drug release from the PVP hydrogels. Experimental results show that the hydrogels swell to a size larger than the diameter of the pylorus(l.3$\pm$0.7 cm) and the hydrogel prepared by the chemical method is digested by pepsin. But the hydrogel prepared by the $\gamma$-irradiation method was not digested by the pepsin and just collapsed with time. Thus, the swelling of the hydrogel synthesized by $\gamma$-irradiation was independent albumin acrylation time and pepsin concentration. But drug content and radiation dose affected the swelling and drug release kinetics of the hydrogel. Drug release from the hydrigels was prolonged up to about 24 hr. Therefore, it was concluded that by adjusting these factors, the albumin-crosslinked PVP hydrogel synthesized by $\gamma$-irradiation method is expected to be retained in the stomach for up to 60hr and be a potential platform of drugs for long-term GI absorption.

This paper presents the influence on the transmission characteristics of swelling in rectangular waveguides for Q-band. We derived the Green's functions of the waveguide with eigenfunction expansion method. The reflection coefficient of the waveguide with a swelling is calculated by using internal impedance in order to investigate the influence of swelling in the waveguide. In order to check the validity of the theoretical analysis, the calculated reflection coefficients are compared with the measured results.
Specimens of seven hardwood species were heat-treated at three temperature levels of 170, 190 and $210^{\circ}C$. Their FSP's were measured by the volumetric swelling method and compared with the control's. Within a species the FSP decreases as the temperature of heat treatment increases. The FSP's of the controls range from 26.1 to 29.6%, while those of the specimens heat-treated at $210^{\circ}C$ from 16.9 to 21.8%. There were no difference of basic density between the heat-treated and control specimens. The color indexes of ash and beech specimens were measured using a colorimeter. It was revealed that the temperature of heat treatment affected on the color more than the treatment time.
To elucidate the behaviors of alkali swelllng of woods. the dimensional change in cross section of cell elements of four major Korean woods during alkali swelling were examined by an optical microscory, an imaging analysis method and an X-ray diffrartion During alkali swelling, tracheid diameter of Larix kaempferi wood showed greater swelling property than that of Pinus koraiensis wood, and the cell wall swelled highly over 10% sodium hydroxide solution treatment. The radial diameter of vessel elements in earlywood shrunk, but it swelled slightly in tangential direction. When treated with 5% NaOH, the wall thickness of wood fiber increased about three times over the original one. The thickness of cell wall in all elements and the diameter of wood fiber and tracheid showed almost isotropic shrinkage. The diameter of cell elements during the mercerization process decreased, but cell wall thickness Increased. Crystal transformation of cellulose in wood was not occurred by alkali treatments. but relative crystallinity and crystallite width of the woods increased slightly. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the swelling properties of woods were dependant on wood species, cell elements and alkali concentration.

The effect on kidney, gill, and hepatopancreas of juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus were investigated by histological method under limit concentration of effulent of PCBs for 60 days. The free surface of epithelial cell layer in the renal tubules of kidney showed a strong positive reaction in alcian blue during all exposure period. There were also observed swelling of hemocyte in glomerulus and macrophage. At 60 days after exposure, epithelium of the renal tubules was fused and some of organism $(20\%)$ showed damage of glomerulus and eosinophlic cell in epithelium of the renal tubules. The phenomena such as the activation and increase of the chloride cell, and swelling of hemocyte in the capillary of gill were observed during all exposure period. At 60 days after exposure, swelling of the gill filament and mucous cell appeared in gill and some of organism $(30\%)$ showed swelling of the gill lamellar. Swelling of hemocyte in the capillary of hepatopancreas was observed and the free surface of epithelial layer of the bile duct showed positive reaction in alcian blue during all exposure period. Degenerated zymogen in the pancreas and swelling of the hepatocyte were occurred at 60 days after exposure.
RS yields and swelling powers of cross-linked RS 4 starches and effects of RS 4 starches on the pasting profiles of RS 4 added wheat starch were measured using RVA. RS yields by AOAC method were different among RS 4 starches and RS levels were higher in low swelling RS 4 starches than moderate swelling RS 4 starches. Swelling power was different with botanical source of starch and preparing procedure of RS 4 starches. The pasting curves of RS 4 added wheat starches showed increasing initial pasting temperature and lower viscosity but the patterns were similar to those of wheat starch. The pasting viscosity pattern of RS 4 added wheat starches was related with swelling power of RS 4 starch.
This study aims to observe the swelling representative rocks in Korea and to suggest improvements in the use of test methods and prior analysis in relation to the weathering of rocks. The swelling test and analysis were performed on the drilling cores obtained for the ground investigation at the domestic highway construction site. For the method of determining the absorption expansion index of rocks, the method proposed in "Standard Methods for Sample Collection and Specimen Preparation" of ISRM and Korean Rock Engineers Standard Rock Test Method was used. The specimen for the measurement of the expansion displacement was cylindrical with a height of 10 cm and a diameter of 5 cm. The existing swelling analysis method evaluates the sensitivity to weathering by using the maximum expansion displacement, but since the classification by bedrock grade is unclear, it is reasonable to use the rate of change of the expansion displacement according to the immersion time. It is necessary to conduct an experiment to distinguish between weathering and fault deterioration. In addition, long-term weathering prediction technology for each cancer type is needed through the expansion displacement analysis of the chemical weathering stage.

Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was identified to possess good mucoadhesive properties ensuring its application to extend the retention times of the formulations at the oral cavity, intended route of administration using the polymer. In the noncross-linked state, PAA will swell and become eroded owing to the presence of salivary flow from the site of application. The formation of cross-links between the polymer chains will allow swelling but prevents the erosion of the dosage form. In the current study, cross-linking was achieved by esterification of the PAA chains with sucrose. The density of crosslinking was modified by changing sucrose concentration and the duration of cure time. The cross-linking density of the polymer hydrogel was assessed by equilibrium swelling studies. The mucoadhesion testing method allowed a comparative study of the hydrogels prepared. An inverse relationship between equilibrium swelling and peak detachment force showed that increased PAA chain density per unit area enhanced the mucoadhesive interaction.
In this work, a novel method to synthesis of an acrylic superabsorbent hydrogel was reported. In the two stage hydrogel synthesis, first copolymerization reaction of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AM) monomers using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator was performed. In the second stage, the resulted copolymer was hydrolyzed to produce carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the polyacrylonitrile chains. The results from FTIR spectroscopy and the dark red-yellow color change show that the copolymerization, alkaline hydrolysis and crosslinking reactions have been do take place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verifies that the synthesized hydrogels have a porous structure. The results of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis showed that the average pore diameter of the synthesized hydrogel was 13.9 nm. The synthetic parameters affecting on swelling capacity of the hydrogel, such as AM/AN weight ratio and hydrolysis time and temperature, were systematically optimized to achieve maximum swelling capacity (330 g/g). The swollen gel strength of the synthesized hydrogels was evaluated via viscoelastic measurements. The results indicated that superabsorbent polymers with high water absorbency were accompanied by low gel strength. The swelling of superabsorbent hydrogels was also measured in various solutions with pH values ranging from 1 to 13. Also, the pH reversibility and on-off switching behavior makes the hydrogel as a good candidate for controlled delivery of bioactive agents. Finally, the swelling of synthesized hydrogels with various particle sizes obey second order kinetics.
