As sewerage systems have obsolete, as quality and service level standards increase, and as rain characteristics change, the sewerage utility authorities are challenged to develop cost recovery strategies that assure financial sustainability. In this study, we conducted scenario analysis to examine the effect of three alternatives of partial or full sewerage cost recovery in Seoul during 2014-30 periods. It turned out that the alternative 1 is optimal and recommended. According to alternative 1, we had better increase annually sewerage fee by 14.8% until 2020 and thereafter apply only the inflation rate in setting sewerage fee. It would gradually decrease the deficit after 2019. The accumulated deficit of 13 billion Won in 2030 was estimated. We expect that this kind of analysis may provide useful informations to help sewage utility staffs, decision makers, and regulatory authorities understand, develop and implement ultimate full cost recovery strategy for many municipalities.
Eco-village is an alternative community which applies ecological principles to the development of human ecosystem in order to achieve sustainability. Ansolgi village in Korea has been established five years ago, in 1999, by a group of environment conscious families. The author has visited and stayed in the village twice during last two years, for several days each time, and observed and surveyed the changes of physical, social, and cultural aspects of the community. They adopt more environment friendly techniques in building their houses, sewage system, roads and parking, and growing their own foods, and so on. The residents have diverse jobs, many of them outside the village as the village lacks job opportunities. The residents themselves often question the sustainability of the village and reluctant to identity Ansolgi as an eco-village. Most residents joined the community with their own images of an eco-village and find it difficult to reach consensus on what the eco-village should be like and how it should be managed and maintained. Residents wish to get government assistances and professional guidance. This paper concludes it is still very difficulty and problematic to establish an eco-village in Korea.
As biodiversity loss has been highlighted as a global risk, biodiversity activities are gaining attention as a part of companies' Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) related management. This study evaluates various biodiversity activities of corporations based on domestic and international indicators. We present the role of corporations expressly in afforestation activities and suggest additional information that should be disclosed for the accurate verification of environmental values by third parties. KT&G was selected as the subject of the evaluation. The 4th National Biodiversity Strategy was used as a domestic indicator, and GRI Standard 304 as an international indicator. Companies can play a leading role in planning, implementing, and monitoring afforestation activities and should further disclose the species composition of the forests created and the age of the seedlings to enhance the credibility of the environmental values stated in their sustainability reports.
Purpose: Suggesting a working prototype of a kinetic light shelf unit and revealing its energy efficiency by a series of building performance simulations were presented. Recently, kinetic building envelope has been an emerging technology as an innovative way to control exterior building environment, but products from many researches about the facade could not been reached to the industrialization so far. That is because its initial installation, operation and maintenance costs are still too high to use for the practical field, although buildings using kinetic envelopes could decrease their energy consumption significantly. This narrow point of view needs to be reconsidered, since buildings require great amount of energies to run their functions through the whole life and using better building components can lead to achieve much more benefits in aspects of the lifecycle cost (LCC). Method: A series of certified simulation tools like Ecotect and Green Building Studio that are normally used for researches and developments in the field of architecture were utilized. Result: Based on simulation analyses, the result of the study has showed that the proposed system definitely has adaptability to the professions and positively shows practicability as advanced integrative building envelopes with renewable energy association.
Purpose: This study discusses the phenomenon of the uncertain sustainability of SMEs in developing countries. SMEs face various challenges in the dynamics of a competitive environment, which threaten their growth and sustainability. This study aims to address a research gap between company's internal resources, in the form of absorptive capacity, and its business performance. By using product quality as a mediator, which has never been studied before, this research presents a novelty to answer the existing research gap using the Resource Based Theory (RBT) perspective. Research design, data and methodology: Using quantitative method, data are collected from 164 respondents, who are owners or managers of furniture manufacturing SMEs in Gerbangkertosusila Area, East Java, Indonesia. The data are analyzed using Partial Least Square (PLS) - Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results: The findings show that absorptive capacity has a direct and significant effect on business performance and indirectly through product quality. Conclusion: Furniture manufacturing SMEs are advised to focus on developing absorptive capacity reflected in good product quality, in order to improve their business performance. This is especially important to survive the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, the results of this study contribute to the development of RBT, and there are several suggestions for further research.
Purpose: There is a significant opportunity for ESG management to act as a useful guideline for social welfare organizational structures when dealing with sustainability and ethical leadership. The ESG guidelines should allow these companies to improve their business efficacy. This paper aims to explore the specific impacts of ESG management on social welfare. Research design, data and methodology: The systematic review approach ensures that quality work is undertaken in tackling the existing gaps in the literature on ESG management in social welfare organizations. The outcomes of this review will give a useful 'real-life' picture of the consequences of ESG practices and suggestions that can increase the efficiency and sustainability of social welfare organizations. Results: The principal favorable consequences are discussed in this chapter regarding the social welfare organization due to the implementation of ESG management. Subsequently, each effect is posted under different sub-titles and evidence from previously conducted research studies. Conclusions: ESG management is vital for social welfare organizations since it increases their efficiency in operations, public image, and opportunities to receive funds, and it helps improve relations with stakeholders. More so, these organizations can embrace the ESG practices and as a result bring more efficiency to the general welfare of the society.

This study drew the reason of the limitation in low-carbon city plan from a absence of 'social sustainability' and supplemented its limitation by suggesting the new concept of city facility called Green Media. It clarified the concept of Green Media, and analyzed its effect on low-carbon city plan based on the analysis of related cases inside and outside the country. This study made an important step forward in introducing the new concept to complement social sustainability, analyzing its effect, and suggesting the applicable details.
Purpose - This paper analyzes the economic and non-economic factors that contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions, based on G20 panel data. Design/methodology - We conduct a comparative analysis of advanced and developing economies during 1995-2016. To examine the impact, an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model was employed, incorporating additional explanatory variables such as internet use, renewable energy, and services trade. Findings - The empirical findings show the existence of an inverted U-shaped EKC phenomenon between GDP per capita and CO2 emissions in G20 economies, with the turning point at a per capita GDP level of US$ 38,340. Moreover, an inverted U-shape relation exists between internet use and CO2 emissions, with the turning point at a 44% internet use rate. The comparative analysis show that the inverted U-shape curve only exits in advanced economies, with turning points of US$ 42,356 per capita GDP and 27% internet use rate, respectively. Renewable energy and services trade have a greater negative impact on CO2 emissions in advanced economies than in developing economies. Originality/value - Renewable energy and services trade have a greater negative impact on CO2 emissions in advanced economies than in developing economies. Overall, the results suggest the role of internet use, renewable energy and services trade in sustainable development in G20 countries.
Purpose: Environmental contamination has lately been seen as a consequence of the rise in environmental challenges brought on by rapid industrial expansion. At this point, the current research asks an important question about what the factors are to motivate employees' green performance, increasing corporate sustainability. Research design, data and methodology:The current author selected total 19 items to obtain real data and achieve the purpose of this research. For measuring of the causality between the worker's innovative capability and green performance, the current author used the multiple regression statistical tool using U.S. 215 responses in four industry. Results: The statistical finding definitely indicated that there exists the causal linkage between two key factors (Innovation capability and green performance) as well as the strong direction between two constructs. As a result, the current author could accept all hypotheses, checking no existing the multicollinearity of the present constructs with 'TOL' and 'VIF' values. Conclusions: The present research concluded that literature and business management scholars and practitioners will benefit from this study's statistical results. Furthermore, rewarding staff creativity, encouraging quick answers to market movements, and incorporating technology into everyday operations are all ways that companies may cultivate an environmental stewardship culture.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate an environmental education model school and to devise proper plans for school management through the school eco-audit. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, environmental education model school is analysed from view point of planning and executing. So that, environmental education model school put emphasis on executing rather than planning. It requires to emphasis planning, for example, establishing environment management system, ecological measures, environment reporting. Secondly, environmental education model school is in the incipient stage as the environment prevention. The preparation for planning is inefficient compared to the ecological pretest of school eco-audit. In the aspect of ecological measures and education, the participant of all the school staff is unsatisfactory. In conclusion, the school eco-audit could be presented as a key role for establishing basic organizational conditions, ecological measures and education for sustainable development, It is necessary to drive environmental education model school to achieve extended effect for sustainable society.
