The composite coating of suspended inert particles $\alpha$-Al2O3 and copper from acid sulphate bath was investigated at the Rotating Disk Electrode. Effects of rotation speeds of electrode, physical properties of electrolyte, the size and concentration of suspended particles on the codeposition ratio of Al2O3 and the enhancement of mass transfer of copper ions were examined. Particularly, new experimental method for the measurement of the codeposition ratio was suggested and also the characteristics of the composite coating layer were measured by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry. Mass transfer of suspended particles system were increased up to 40% more than those of without suspended particles system. Optimum conditions of current density, hydrodynamics of RDE, and particles concentration showing maximum codeposition ratio were appeared in our experimental ranges. It was shown that the suspended inert particles were codeposited mainly near the surface of the composite coating layer.
Water samples were collected at 7 sites located along the River Nakdong on 30 occasions. Water qualities, size and fractal dimension ($d_F$) of suspended particles were measured. Laser light scattering method was used to obtain the size and $d_F$ of suspended particles. The average size of particles in this river ranged from $89{\mu}m$ and $169{\mu}m$, which appears to be relatively coarse compared with other rivers worldwide. The average $d_F$ of suspended particles in this study ranged from 1.8 to 1.9. The correlation analysis showed that DO, TN, $NO_3$ and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ had significant positive relationships with particles size, whereas flow rates and TSS had negative relationships. Interestingly, the factors of which had positive relationships with particles size showed negative relationship with the fractal dimension ($d_F$) of suspended particles. Generally, as the size of particles increased, the fractal dimension of particles decreased which was indicating the shape of the larger particles became more irregular.
Numerical experiments are conducted using a three-dimensional baroclinic equation model and a Lagrangian method for clarifying the effect of th settling velocity on the suspended solids diffusion caused by the dredging and the reclamination works. Diffusion characteristics of the neutral particles and the weighting particles is experimented by the Lagrangian particles trajectory model, The results show that the diffusion characteristics of the suspended solids is effected by the settling velocity classified by the particles size in the density layered semi-closed bay. To estimate exactly the diffusion characteristics of the suspended solids and the contaminant with weight the three-dimensional baroclinic equation model and the three-dimensional Lagrangian particles trajectory model considering the settling velocity of the particle in the density layered semi-closed bay must be used.
The effects of windbreaks on the reduction of suspended particles are investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure scheme based on the renormalization group (RNG) theory. In the control experiment, the recirculation zones behind the storage piles are generated and, as a whole, relatively monotonous flow patterns appear. When the windbreaks with the 0% porosity are constructed, the recirculation zones are generated by the windbreaks and very complicated flow patterns appear due to the interference between the windbreaks and storage piles. The porosity of the windbreaks suppresses the generation of the recirculation zone and decreases the wind velocity in the windbreaks as well as that outside the windbreaks. As the emission of suspended particles from the storage piles are closely related with the friction velocity at the surfaces of the storage piles, variation of the friction velocity and total amount of the emission of the suspended particles with the height and porosity of the windbreaks are investigated. The results show that higher and more porous windbreaks emit less suspended particles and that the reduction effect of the porosity is still more effective than that of the height. In the case of the windbreak with 30 m height and 50% porosity, friction velocities above the storage piles are smaller than the critical friction velocity above which particles would be suspended. As a result, total amount of suspended particles are much fewer than those in other cases.
In situ particle size spectra are obtained from two sequent cruises in order to evaluate the physical consequences of suspended particulate matters caused by episodic storm runoff from the Santa Ana River watershed, an urbanized coastal watershed. Suspended particles from various sources including surface runoff, near-bed resuspension, and phytoplankton are identified in empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and an entropy-based parameterization (Shannon entropy). The first EOF mode is associated with high turbidity and fine particles as indicated by the elevated beam attenuation near the Santa Ana River and Newport Bay outlets, and the second EOF mode explains the suspended sediment dispersal and particle coarsening at the near-surface plume. Chlorophyll particles are also distinguished by negative magnitudes of the first EOF mode, which is supported by the relationship between fluorescence and beam attenuation. The integrated observation between the first EOF mode and the Shannon entropy index accentuates the characteristics of two different structures and/or sources of sediment particles; the near-surface plumes are originated from runoff water outflow, while the near-bottom particles are resuspended due to increased wave heights or mobilizing bottom turbidity currents. In a coastal pollution context, these methods may offer useful means of characterizing particle-associated pollutants for purposes of source tracking and environmental interpretation.
During period of the rainy season of spring tide Aug. 2005, the suspended sediment transport rate from Seomjin River increased ten times as high as neap tide of low river discharge. During ebb tide of high terrestrial input, the grain size of suspended particles of both surface and bottom layer of the water column, showed a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at coarse fraction, which suggests a characteristic development of floc-sized particles of low mean effective density. On the contrary, the particles supplied toward upstream of Seomjin river from Gwangyang Bay during flood tide showed a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at finer fraction, possibly due to the resuspension and the deflocculation associated with the increased shear velocity at near bottom. Break-up of large flocs is also suggested by the increased mean effective density. However, settling velocity was lower during flood tide because of smaller grain size. Thus, net deposition of suspended sediment is expected at within Gwangyang Bay instead of upstream of Seomjin River, even though suspended sediment transport rate at near bottom water was three times higher than that at surface water during flood tide.
The concentration and size analysis of in-situ suspended particulate material were measured using an optical instrument, LISST-100, in the bottom layer at the three inlets of the Seomjin River Estuary, mouth of Gwangyang bay, and Gwangyang bay-side of the Namhae Bridge. In the Seomjin river estuary and mouth of Gwangyang bay-side of the Namhae Bridge, the in-situ mean grain size of the suspended material changed from a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at a coarse fraction to a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at the finer particles. Seomjin River. The interactions between suspended particulate concentration and beam attenuation coefficient of suspended particulate matters depended on the supply of finer and coarser particles in the mouth of Gwangyang Bay and Seomjin River. So, interactions reflected difference of the concentration, mean size and sorting of suspended particulate matters. The difference of interaction showed dynamic behaviors to the resuspension and deflocculation processes increased river discharge. This showed that it may be possible to use the interactions between the suspended particle concentration and beam attenuation coefficient to monitor the temporal and spatial distributions of in-situ particles.
Total suspended particulates (TSP) in the atmosphere was collected and size-fractionated by Andersen high volume air sampler for one year (Mar. 1987 $\sim$ Feb. 1988) in Seoul. The concentrations of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals were determined to investigate the atmospheric concentrations, seasonal variations and its relationship with the size distribution of suspended particulate matter. The arithmetic mean concentration of total suspended particulates was 200.44 $\mug/m^3$. The concentrations of heavy metals were 2433.80 for Fe, 629.49 for Zn, 600.71 for Pb, 143.87 for Cu, and 107.21 $ng/m^3$ for Mn, respectively. The concentrations of PAHs were 3.83 for benzo(a) pyrene, 2.95 for benzo(k)fluoranthene, and 4.42 $ng/m^3$ for benzo(ghi)perylene, respectively. PAHs, Pb and Zn abounded in particles below 2.0 $\mu$m, while Fe and Mn aboounded in particles above 2.0 $\mu$m. TSP and its chemical compositions showed the seasonal variations. The concentrations of anthrophogenic pollutants like TSP, PAHs and heavy metals in the fine particles were highest in winter and lowest in summer. PAHs and Pb analyzed showed significant correlations between each other and between TSP concentration in fine particles, indicating that the particles in which they are contained have a similar behavior in the atmosphere.
The effects of meteorological and reclaiming conditions on the reduction of suspended particles are investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence closure scheme based on the renormalization group (RNG) theory. Twelve numerical experiments with different meteorological and reclaiming conditions are performed. For identifying the meteorological characteristics of the target area and providing the inflow conditions of the CFD model, the observed data from the automatic weather station (AWS) near the target area is analyzed. Complicated flow patterns such as flow distortion, horse-shoe vortex, recirculation zone, and channeling flow appeared due to the topography and buildings in the domain. Specially, the flow characteristics around the reclamation area are affected by the reclaiming height, reclaiming size and windbreak height. Reclaiming height affected the wind speed above the reclaiming area. Windbreak induces more complicated flow patterns around the reclaiming area as well as within the reclaiming area. In front of the windbreak, flow is distorted as it impinges on the windbreak. As a result, upward flow is generated there. Behind the windbreak, a secondary circulation, so called, a recirculation zone is generated and flow is reattached at the end of the recirculation zone (reattachment point). At the lower part of the recirculation zone, there is a reverse flow toward the windbreak. Flow passing to the reattachment point starts to be recovered. Total amounts of suspended particles are calculated using the frictional and threshold frictional velocities, erosion potential function, and the number of surface disturbance. In the case of a 10 m-reclaiming and northerly wind, the amount of suspended particles is largest. In the presence of 5 m windbreak, the friction velocity above the reclaiming area is largely reduced. As a result, the total amount of the suspended particles largely decreases, compared to the case with the same reclaiming and meteorological conditions except for the windbreak The calculated suspended particle amounts are used as the emission rate of the dispersion model simulations and the dispersion characteristics of the suspended particles are analyzed.
Total suspended particles in the atmosphere were collected on the quartz fiber filters using an ANdersen Hi-volume air sampler from March 1989 to October 1989 and from June 1990 to February 1991, at Chung-Ang University in Seoul. A total amount of eight heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Fe, V, Ti, Mn) in total suspended particles were determined by ICP spectrophotometer. The annual arithmetic mean concentration of total suspended particle was 162.3$\mug/m^3$ and eight metals(Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Fe, V, Ti, Mn) were 11.6, 609.2, 3.5, 337.1, 2739.5, 15.1, 89.4 and 100.5ng/$m^3$, respectively. The concentration of total suspended particle was highest in the spring(343.7$\mug/m^3$) and lowest in the summer(91.8$\mug/m^3$). These heavy metals were distinguished into two groups in terms of their particle size distribution. The contents of first-group heavy metals (Fe, Ti, Mn) were increased in accordance with the growth of the particle size. The contents of the second-group ones such as Pb, Cd, V, and Zn, on the contrary, came to increase according as the particle size reduced. Statistical analysis indicated that there was a correlation between total suspended particle and Fe in coarse particles, and between total Suspended Particle and Zn, Pb in fine particle.
