Corrosion inhibitors based on Zn-Al hydrotalcites containing benzoate (ZnAlHB) with different molar ratios of Zn/Al were prepared with a co-precipitation process. Compositions and structures of the resulting hydrotalcites were studied with suitable spectroscopic methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and surface zeta potential measurements, respectively. Results of physico-chemical studies showed that crystallite sizes, compositions of products, and surface electrical properties were significantly changed when the molar ratio of Zn/Al was increased. The release of benzoate from hydrotalcites also differed slightly among samples. Anticorrosion abilities of hydrotalcites intercalated with benzoate at a concentration of 3 g/L on carbon steel were analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization curve, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and SEM. Corrosion inhibition abilities of benzoate modified hydrotalcites in 0.1 M NaCl showed an upward trend with increasing Zn/Al ratio. The reason for the dependence of corrosion resistance on the Zn/Al ratio was discussed, including changes in the microstructure of hydrotalcites such as crystal size, density, uniformity, and formation of ZnO.
Liposomes having particle size from several tens to hundreds nanometers are efficient carriers for injectable drug delivery. Enhancement of liposome stability in bloodstream has been studied because of its relatively short circulation time and fast clearance from human body by reticuloendothelial system (RES) in blood vessel. In this study, new disaccharide-1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DSPE) derivatives in which lactose or sucrose as the disaccharide molecule was conjugated covalently to DSPE were synthesized. Liposomes of which surface had disaccharide molecules were prepared by incorporating the disaccharide-DSPE into liposomes as one of their lipid components. Particle size of the prepared liposomes was approximately 100 nm. The liposomes of which surface were modified with the disaccharide-DSPE showed -25 mV of zeta potential value due to the presence of hydroxyl groups on their surface, while the unmodified control liposomes showed -10 mV of zeta potential value. Loading efficiency of model drug, doxorubicin, into liposomes was about 90%. Stability of the disaccharide-modified liposomes in vitro was evaluated by monitoring the amount of protein adsorption and particle size of the liposomes in serum. Disaccharide-modified liposomes were more stable in serum than unmodified control liposomes or polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-modified liposomes due to less adsorption of serum protein and hence less increase of their particle size. The liposomes of which surface was modified with disaccharide-DSPE conjugate can be used as long-circulating carriers for drugs having high toxicity or short half-life time due to their enhanced stability in blood circulatory system.
In this study, zwitterionic surfactants were added to liposome systems at different pH conditions to understand the effect of surfactants on liposome characteristics. For this purpose, amine oxide surfactants having different hydrocarbon chain lengths were synthesized and the structure of the resulting product was elucidated by using $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, and FT-IR. In addition, the physical properties of newly synthesized surfactants such as critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension and isoelectric point were measured. The stability characteristics of liposome systems including average particle sizes and zeta potentials were measured by varying pH and hydrocarbon chain lengths of an amine oxide surfactant. Effects of the pH and hydrocarbon chain length of an amine oxide surfactant on fluidity of a liposome membrane were also examined by measuring the deformability and the binding degree between the surfactant and liposome.

To increase the stability of liposomes in blood circulation, surface modification of liposomes by incorporating a lipid-polymer derivative in the lipid bilayer or conjugating a hydrophilic polymer to the liposomal surface has been developed. In this study, the comblike copolymer, poly(HEMA-co-HPOEM), having multiple polyethyleneoxide side chains was prepared by free radical polymerization of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and hydroxypolyoxyethylenemethacrylate (HPOEM) as vinyl monomers. Poly(HEMA-co-HPOEM) was conjugated to the liposomal surface and the characteristics of the modified liposomes in serum were investigated. Conjugation of poly(HEMA-co-HPOEM) to liposomes increased the particle size of the liposomes by 30 nm and decreased the absolute value of zeta potential of the liposomes by shielding the negative charge of liposomal surface. Loading efficiency of model drug, doxorubicin, in liposomes was about 90% and the efficiency was not affected by conjugation of poly(HEMA-co-HPOEM) to liposomes. The particle size of poly(HEMA-co-HPOEM)-conjugated liposomes in serum did not changed and the protein adsorption was lower than that of control liposomes or liposomes containing polyethyleneoxide-lipid derivative (PEG-liposomes). These results suggest that poly(HEMA-co-HPOEM) is efficient for the stabilization of liposomes in blood circulation.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a natural lipid cofactor with antioxidant and anti-aging properties as cosmetic and food ingredients, involved in cellular energy metabolism. Here, nano-emulsions with CoQ10 were fabricated with lecithin, ethanol, oil, and sorbitan monostearate (Arlacel 60), as major components. Phase inversion emulsion method with ultrasonicator was utilized in producing CoQ10 solution, and stabilization effects from lecithin and ethanol and other diverse perturbation factors were evaluated over time. Physical properties of the emulsion were characterized such as its size, surface charges by zeta-potential, and the overall structures. Optimal concentrations of CoQ10 and Arlacel 60 were 0.8% and 3%, respectively, for producing the smallest sizes of nanoemersions in a 100 nm diameter with best morphology. No notable changes in the size were observed over 7 days from Ostwald ripening, when the concentration of Arlacel 60 was higher than 2%. Even after 270 days at room temperature, the size of nanoemulsions maintained as 115 nm in diameter, revealing only a 10% increase with high degrees of long termed stability and substantiality. In addition, changes in the surface potential occurred possible due to the flocculation effect on the nanoparticles.

A novel, efficient and controlled protocol for the synthesis and enhanced photocatalytic activity of $Au@TiO_2$ nanocomposite is developed. $TiO_2$ (P25) was pretreated by employing UV light (${\lambda}$ = 254 nm) and the pretreated $TiO_2$ was uniformly decorated by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in presence of sodium citrate and UV light. UV pretreatment makes the $TiO_2$ activated, as electrons were accumulated within the $TiO_2$ in the conduction band. These accumulated electrons facilitate the formation of AuNPs which were of very small size (2-5 nm), similar morphology and uniformly deposited at $TiO_2$ surface. It leads to formation of stable and crystalline $Au@TiO_2$ nanocomposites. The rapidity (13 hours), monodispersity, smaller nanocomposites and easy separation make this protocol highly significant in the area of nanocomposites syntheses. As-synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, HRTEM, TEM-EDX, SAED, XRD, UV-visible spectrophotometer and zeta potential. Dye degradation experiments of methyl orange show that type I ($Au@TiO_2$ nanocomposites in which $TiO_2$ was pretreated with UV light) has enhanced photocatalytic activity in comparison to type II ($Au@TiO_2$ nanocomposites in which $TiO_2$ was not pretreated with UV light) and $TiO_2$ (P25). This shows that pretreatment of $TiO_2$ provides type I a better catalytic activity.

Due to its stability at high temperature and its layered structure, $Ti_3SiC_2$ MAX phase was considered to the interphase of $SiC_f/SiC$ composite. In this study, $Ti_3SiC_2$ MAX phase powder was deposited on SiC fiber via the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The Zeta potential of the $Ti_3SiC_2$ suspension with and without polyethyleneimine as a dispersant was measured to determine the conditions of the EPD experiments. Using a suspension with 0.03 wt.% ball milled $Ti_3SiC_2$ powder and 0.3 wt.% PEI, $Ti_3SiC_2$ MAX phase was successfully coated on SiC fiber with an EPD voltage of 10 V for 2 h. Most of the coated $Ti_3SiC_2$ powders are composed of spherical particles. Part of the $Ti_3SiC_2$ powders that are platelet shaped are oriented parallel to the SiC fiber surface. From these results we expect that $Ti_3SiC_2$ can be applied to the interphase of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites.

To study the flow characteristics of water-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids according to the shape of the nanoparticles, we measure the pressure drop in a fully developed laminar flow regime. Water-based $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids of 0.3 Vol.% with sphere-, rod-, platelet-, and brick-shaped nanoparticles are manufactured by the two-step method. Zeta potential is measured to examine the suspension and dispersion characteristics, and TEM image is considered to confirm the shape characteristics of the nanoparticles. The experimental results show that the pressure drop of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids depends on the shape of the nanoparticles although the nanofluids has same volume fraction of nanoparticles. This is explained by the surface area per unit mass of the nanoparticles and the size of the nanoparticles suspended in the base fluids.
The objectives of this study were to manufacture casein phosphopeptide (CPP)/chitosan oligosaccharide (CSO) nanocomplexes and to investigate the impacts of manufacturing variables, such as CPP concentration and pH, on their morphological and physicochemical characteristics. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and particle size analysis were used to assess the morphological and physicochemical properties of the CPP/CSO nano-complexes, respectively. Based on the images obtained by TEM, the spherical shapes of the CPP/CSO nanocomplexes ranged from 50 to 150 nm. As the concentration of CPP was increased and the pH was decreased, the average particle size of the nanocomplexes significantly (p<0.05) increased. The CPP/CSO nanocomplexes had a highly uniform distribution with a polydispersity index value of less than 0.3. In addition, they had a negative surface charge with a zeta-potential value between -17 and -26 mV. The CPP/CSO nanocomplexes showed good stability during the freeze-drying process. In conclusion, CPP/CSO nanocomplexes were successfully manufactured, and the CPP concentration and pH were found to be key factors that affected their morphological and physicochemical properties.
Liposomes have been used as one of the efficient carriers for drug delivery. In this study, anionic liposomes of which surface was modified by using both electrostaic interaction between anionic liposomes and cationically charged BSA molecules at lower pH than isoelectric point (pI) of BSA and denaturation of the BSA-coated liposomes by thermal treatment. The thermally denatured BSA-coated liposomes (DBAL) had mean particle diameter of 125.2${\pm}$1.7 nm and zeta potential value of -22.4${\pm}$4.5 mV. Loading efficiency of model drug, doxorubicin (DOX), into liposomes was 83.0${\pm}$2.6%. Results of in vitro stability study of DBAL in blood plasma showed that the mean particle diameter of DBAL 400 did not increase in blood plasma and adsorption of plasma protein was much less than plain or anionic liposomes. Intracellular uptake of DBAL 400 evaluated by confocal microscopy observation was higher than that of PEG liposomes.
