  • In this study, nonlinear wave interaction in the presence of a uniform current is studied using numerical model, named CADMAS-SURF which is based on the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with Volume of Fluid for tracking free surface deformation. The original CADMAS-SURF developed for interaction of wave with structure is modified/extended to simulate nonlinear fluid dynamic motions within wave-current coexisting field. The capability of Numerical Wave-Current Tank (NWCT) in this study is validated by comparing with available existing laboratory experiments for both wave-following and wave-opposing current. The numerical results for interaction between wave and current are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. Then, this study focused on the dynamic motions of the water velocity, surface elevation and vorticity within combined wave-current field in demonstrating complex nonlinear physical phenomena due to interaction between wave and current. In addition, NWCT is applied to simulate a more complex wave-current-structure field for wave propagating over a submerged breakwater associated with current. Detailed discussion including characteristics of velocity and vorticity fields and the relation between free surface and vorticity are given.

  • Recently, the number of jellyfish has been rapidly grown because of the global warming, the increase of marine structures, pollution, and etc. The increased jellyfish is a threat to the marine ecosystem and induces a huge damage to fishery industries, seaside power plants, and beach industries. To overcome this problem, a manual jellyfish dissecting device and pump system for jellyfish removal have been developed by researchers. However, the systems need too many human operators and their benefit to cost is not so good. Thus, in this paper, the design, implementation, and experiments of autonomous jellyfish removal robot system, named JEROS, have been presented. The JEROS consists of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), a device for jellyfish removal, an electrical control system, an autonomous navigation system, and a vision-based jellyfish detection system. The USV was designed as a twin hull-type ship, and a jellyfish removal device consists of a net for gathering jellyfish and a blades-equipped propeller for dissecting jellyfish. The autonomous navigation system starts by generating an efficient path for jellyfish removal when the location of jellyfish is received from a remote server or recognized by a vision system. The location of JEROS is estimated by IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and GPS, and jellyfish is eliminated while tracking the path. The performance of the vision-based jellyfish recognition, navigation, and jellyfish removal was demonstrated through field tests in the Masan and Jindong harbors in the southern coast of Korea.

  • In this study, a flat-type photocatalytic reactor is applied under solar irradiation for simultaneous treatment of target pollutants: reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and oxidation of EDCs (BPA, EE2, E2). An immobilized type of photocatalyst was fabricated to have self-grown nanotubes on its surface in order to overcome limitations of powdery photocatalyst. Moreover, Ti mesh form was chosen as substrate and modified to have both larger surface area and photocatalyst content. Ti mesh was anodized at 50V and $25^{\circ}C$ for 30min in the mixed electrolytes ($NH_4F-H_2O-C_2H_6O_2$) and annealed at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in ambient oxygen to have anatase structure. Surface characterization was done with SEM and XRD methodologies. Fabricated NTT was applied to water treatment, and coexisting Cr(VI) and organics (EDCs) enhanced each other's reactions by scavenging holes and electrons and thus impeding recombination. Also, several experiments were conducted outdoor under direct sunlight and it was observed that both solar-tracking and applying modified photocatalyst were proven to enhance reaction efficiency.

  • In the present study, we proposed a new numerical wave tank model to analyze the vertical tension-leg circular floating bodies, using a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver. An IBM(Immersed Boundary Method) capable of handling interactions between waves and moving structures with complex geometry on a standard regular Cartesian grid system is coupled to the VOF(Volume of Fluid) method for tracking the free surface. Present numerical results for the motions of the floating body were compared with existing experimental data as well as numerical results based on FAVOR(Fractional Area Volume Obstacle Representation) algorithm. For detailed examinations of the present model, the additional hydraulic experiments for floating motions and free surface transformations were conducted. Further, the versatility of the proposed numerical model was verified via the numerical and physical experiments for the general rectangular floating bodies. Numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreement was archived.

  • Groundwater flow simulations were performed to obtain data of groundwater flow used in a safety assessment for a hypothetical geological disposal facility assumed to be located in the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) site. A regional scale modeling of the groundwater flow system was carried out to make boundary conditions for a local scale modeling. And, fracture zones identified at the study site were involved in the local scale groundwater flow model. From the results of the local scale modeling, a hydraulic head distribution was indicated and it was used in a particle tracking simulation for searching pathway of groundwater from the location of the hypothetical disposal facility to the surface where the groundwater reached. The flow distance and discharge rate of the groundwater in the KURT site were calculated. It was thought that the modeling methods used in this study was available to prepare the data of groundwater flow in a safety assessment for a geological disposal facility of radioactive wastes.

  • Our study aims to understand the flow of liquid in an open-top rectangular microchannel that can be used in micro total analysis systems ($\mu$-TAS) because it has advantages in terms of light transmission and energy efficiency. We measured the liquid velocity using particle tracking technique and conducted a simulation with computational fluid dynamics by altering the area of channel cross section and channel length for the capillary-driven flow in the open-top rectangular microchannel. When liquid water drops to an entrance of the fabricated microchannel with a height of 20 μm and a width of 20 ${\mu}m$, it flows along the microchannel by only capillary force. In the wetting behavior of the liquid, important parameters of this flow are channel size, contact angle and liquid properties such as surface tension and viscosity, which are used to control the flow of liquid in the microchannel.

  • Large-sized multi-touch screen is usually made using infrared rays. That is because it has technical constraints or cost problems to make the screen with the other ways using such as existing resistive overlays, capacitive overlay, or acoustic wave. Using infrared rays to make multi-touch screen is easy, but is likely to have technical limits to be implemented. To make up for these technical problems, two other methods were suggested through Surface project, which is a next generation user-interface concept of Microsoft. One is Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR) which uses infrared cameras, the other is Diffuse Illumination (DI). FTIR and DI are easy to be implemented in large screens and are not influenced by the number of touch points. Although FTIR method has an advantage in detecting touch-points, it also has lots of disadvantages such as screen size limit, quality of the materials, the module for infrared LED arrays, and high consuming power. On the other hand, DI method has difficulty in detecting touch-points because of it's structural problems but makes it possible to solve the problem of FTIR. In this thesis, we study the algorithms for effectively correcting the distort phenomenon of optical lens, and image processing algorithms in order to solve the touch detecting problem of the original DI method. Moreover, we suggest calibration algorithms for improving the accuracy of multi-touch, and a new tracking technique for accurate movement and gesture of the touch device. To verify our approaches, we implemented a table-based multi touch screen.

  • Even though recurring eddies at the terminal end of the East Korean Warm Current have been identified in the thermal infrared imagery from the NOAA/AVHRR sensor and ocean color data from Orbview-2/SeaWiFS sensor, it is difficult to make observation in the field regarding recurring eddies located around the Wonsan coastal area in North Korea. But we could get in situ data related to an eddy from an ARGOS satellite tracking drifter trapped in the eddy on January 4th, 1999. An ARGOS drifter, a NOAA satellite tracked buoy was trapped by the eddy during January 4th.March 18, 1999. The ARGOS drifter rotated 10 times per 72 days on the edge of the eddy located at $39^{\circ}N$, $129^{\circ}E$. The diameter of the eddy was about 100 km. The horizontal rotation velocity of the recurring cold-core anti-cyclonic eddy was 1.53 km/h(42 cm/sec). The sea surface temperatures of the eddy varied from $14.7^{\circ}C$ on January 5, 1999 to $9.6^{\circ}C$ on March 18,1999. To study the mechanism of the recurring eddy. we tried to find out the relationship between the vector of the drifter moving in the eddy and the wind vector in Sokcho and Ulleung Island located near the eddy in southern Korea, and the difference in sea level between Ulleung Island and Mukho. We hope the results of this study would be useful for calibration and validation data of simulation and numerical modeling studies of the recurring eddy.

  • The purpose of our research is to efficiently deform a 3D models which is composed of a triangular mesh and a skeleton. We designed a novel inverse kinematics (IK) solver that calculates the updated positions of mesh vertices with fewer computing operations. Through our user interface, one or more markers are selected on the surface of the model and their target positions are set, then the system updates the positions of surface vertices to construct a deformed model. The IK solving process for updating vertex positions includes many computations for obtaining transformations of the markers, their affecting joints, and their parent joints. Many of these computations are often redundant. We precompute those redundant terms in advance so that the 3-nested loop computation structure was improved to a 2-nested loop structure, and thus the computation time for a deformation is greatly reduced. This novel IK solver can be adopted for efficient performance in various research fields, such as handling 3D models implemented by LBS method, or object tracking without any markers.

  • Lake Shiwha, an artificial lake located near metropolitan Seoul, offers a unique water environment and has been suspected to have high levels of chemical and microbiological contaminations. Lake Shiwha was originally connected to the sea but currently has four major surface water inputs from agricultural, municipal, industrial areas and in addition an occasional inflow from the sea. The objectives of this study are to investigate the relative contribution of microbial contaminants from each of the inflowing surface waters and to identify appropriate microbial indicator organisms in this unique water environment. We measured the levels of microbial contaminations in the four inflowing surface waters. A number of microbial indicator organisms including total coliform (TC), fecal coliform (FC), E. coli, Enterococci, somatic and male-specific coliphages were analyzed. Bacterial indicator microorganisms were detected and quantified by the $Colilert^{(R)},\;Enterolert^{(R)}$ kit. Surface water (50 l) was sampled by $ViroCap^{TM}\;5"$ cartridge filters and analyzed by the single agar layer method for detecting coliphages. The concentrations of TC, FC, E. coli, and Enterococci were 1543 CFU/100 ml${\sim}1.99{\times}10^6$ CFU/100 ml, 0 CFU/100 ml${\sim}202$ CFU/100ml, 0 CFU/100 ml${\sim}1.80{\sim}10^5$ CFU/100ml, 74 CFU/100 ml${\sim}3408$ CFU/100 ml, respectively. The male-specific and somatic coliphages were detected in three different inflowing surface waters. Isolated E. coli and Enterococci strains were further analyzed by 16s rDNA amplification and subsequent phylogenetic analysis from Jungwang-chun, Ansan-chun, Banwol-chun and penstock of inflowing surface water. Our results indicated that the concentrations of different fecal indicator microorganisms might not be highly correlated with each other. Multiple microbial indicator organisms should be used for monitoring microbial contamination and microbial source tracking methods.
