The Objectives of this paper were to develop a modified tank model that is capable of simulating daily streamflow from a small watershed using daily watershed evapotranspiration and to test the applicability of the model to different watersheds. Tank model was restructured to consist of three series of tanks, each of which may mathematically reflect watershed runoff mechanisms from different components of surface runoff, interflow, and baseflow. And pan evaporation was correlated to potential evapotranspiration estimated from a combination method, and was multiplied by monthly crop and landuse coefficients, and watershed storage coefficient to estimate the watershed evapotranspiration losses. Ten watersheds were selected to calibrate model parameters that were defined using an optimization scheme, and the results were correlated with watershed parameters. Simulated daily runoff was compared to the observed ones from the tested watersheds. The simulating results were in good agreement with the observed values when optimal and calibrated parameters were used. Ungaged conditions were also applied to compare simulated values to the observed. And the results were in fair conditions for all the tested watersheds which differ considerably in their sizes, landuse types, and physiological features.
In this study, a runoff hydrograph and runoff volume were calculated by using the kinetic wave theory for small urban watersheds based on the concept of low impact development(LID), and the effective imperviousness was estimated based on these calculations. The degree of sensitivity of the effective imperviousness of small watersheds to the impervious to pervious area ratio, infiltration capability, watershed slope, roughness coefficient and surface storage depth was then analyzed. From this analysis, the following conclusions were obtained: The effective imperviousness and paved area reduction factor decreased as the infiltration capability of pervious area increased. As the slope of watersheds becomes sharper, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor display an increasing trend. As the roughness coefficient of impervious areas increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor tend to increase. As the storage depth increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor show an upward trend, but the increase is minimal. Under the conditions of this study, it was found that the effective imperviousness is most sensitive to watershed slope, followed by infiltration capability and roughness coefficient, which affect the sensitivity of the effective imperviousness at a similar level, and the storage depth was found to have little influence on the effective imperviousness.

Anticipated water scarcity in the first half of this century is one of the most concerned international issues. However, even though the issue has an international impact and world wide monitoring is critical, there are limited number of global estimates at present. In this study, annual water availability was derived from annual runoff estimated by land surface models using Total Runoff Integrating Pathways (TRIP) with 0.5 degree by 0.5 degree longitude/latitude resolution globally. Global distribution of water withdrawal for each sector in the same horizontal spatial resolution was estimated based on country-base statistics of municipal water use, industrial water use, and agricultural intake, using global geographical information system with global distributions of population and irrigated crop land area. The total population under water stress estimated for 1995 corresponded very well with former estimates, however, the number is highly depend on how to assume the ratio how much water from outside of the region can be used for water resources within the region. It suggests the importance of regional studies evaluating the possibility of water intake as well as the validity of the investment for water resources withdrawal facilities.

The performance of grass filter strips (GFS) in abating $PO_4$-P concentrations from the forage cropland was tested in an experiment on the 10% slope in Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA) from October 2007 to September 2009. Forage croplands with rye-corn double cropping system applied with chemical fertilizer and livestock manure (LM) were compared in a natural condition. The plots were hydrologically isolated Main plots consisted of the length of GFS, such as 0m, 5m, 10m and 15m. Sub plots consisted of the type of LM, such as chemical fertilizer (CF), composted cattle manure (CCM) and composted swine manure (CSM). Concentrations of PO4-P in surface runoff water were reduced as the length of GFS increased. Especially, GFS with 10m and 15m reduced $PO_4$-P concentrations significantly compared to that with 0m and 5m (p<0.05). The results from this study suggest that GFS improved the removal and trapping $PO_4$-P from forage croplands.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the load of non-point sources pollutant at a paddy plot located at the valley watershed during irrigation period. Irrigation, runoff and water quality data in the paddy plot were analyzed periodically from June 1 to October 31 in 2005. The observed amount of precipitation, irrigation, runoff for the experimental paddy plot during the irrigation period was 1,297.8, 223.2, and 825.4mm, respectively. Total-N concentrations ranged from 3.73 to 18.10mg/L, which was generally higher than the quality standard of agricultural water (1.0mg/L). Total-P concentrations ranged from 0.111 to 0.243mg/L and the average was 0.139mg/L. The observed runoff pollutants loadings from the paddy plot were measured as 34.4 kg/ha for T-N, 1.0 kg/ha for T-P and 213.8 kg/ha for SS. The non-point sources pollutant load in drainage water depends on rainfall and surface drainage water amount from the paddy plot. We are considering that these results were affected by rainfall as well as hydrological condition, soil management, whether or not fertilizer application, cropping, rice straw and plowing.
Groundwater in Jeju Island, flowing through main stream, is spring water from underground. To set a fixed quantity of groundwater flowing from surface in a hydrological view, 4 downstream (Woedo stream, Gangjung stream, Yeonwoe stream and Ongpo stream) were selected to calculate the characteristic of baseflow and the base-flow discharge through the data on tachometry. There were 11 to 14 level peak caused by runoff, mostly occurred during monsoon season. Also, duration of runoff was 15 to 25 hours, well reflecting the characteristic of inclined, short stream length in Jeju Island and pervious hydrogeographical feature. In case of Gangjung stream, Yeonwoe stream and Ongpo stream, variation of stream water level by baseflow rose above during summer, which was closely linked to the distribution of seasonal precipitation. From autumn to spring, water level fell below while that of Woedo stream remained the same all year round. Data on the water level observed in Woedo stream and Gangjung stream in every single minutes was applied to weir formula(equation of Oki and Govinda Rao) to calculate baseflow discharge. Also, using the data on current and water level calculated in Ongpo stream and Yeonwoe stream, water level-water flow rating was applied to assess base flow discharge.
CN values are changed by various surface condition, which is cover type or treatment, hydrologic condition, or percent impervious area, even the same combination of land use and hydrologic soil group. In this study, CN parameters were regionalized for Nakdong River Basin by Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) coupled with SCE-UA, which is one of the global optimization technique. Six watersheds were selected for calibration (optimization) and periodic validation and two watersheds for spatical validation as ungauged watershed within Nakdong River Basin. Nash-Sutcliffe (NS) values were 0.66~0.86 for calibration, 0.68~0.91 for validation, and 0.60 and 0.85 for ungauged watersheds, respectively. Urban area for the selected watersheds covered high impervious area with 85% for residential area and 92% for commercial/industrial/transportation area. Hydrologic characteristics for crop area was similar to row crop with contoured treatment and poor hydrologic condition. For the forested area, hydrologic characteristics could be clearly distinguished from the leaf types of plant. Deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forest showed low, moderate, and high runoff rates by representing wood with fair and poor hydrologic condition, and wood-grass combination with fair hydrologic condition, respectively. CN parameters from this study could be strongly recommended to be used to simulate runoff for ungauged watershed.
Most of the Korean watersheds are mountaineous and consist of various soil types and land uses And seldom watersheds are found to have long term hydrologic records. The SNUA, a hydrologic watershed model was developed to meet the unique characteristics of Korean watershed and simulate the storm hydrographs from a small mountaineous watershed. Also the applicability of the model was tested by comparing the simulated storm hydrographs and the observed from Dochuk watershed, Gwangjugun, Kyunggido The conclusions obtained in this study could be summarized as follows ; 1. The model includes the simulation of interception, evaporation and infiltration for land surface hydrologic cycle on the single storm basis and the flow routing features for both overland and channel systems. 2. Net rainfall is estimated from the continuous computation of water balance at the surface of interception storage accounting for the rainfall intensities and the evaporation losses at each time step. 3. Excess rainfall is calculated by the abstraction of infiltration loss estimated by the Green and Ainpt Model from the net rainfall. 4. A momentum equation in the form of kinematic wave representation is solved by the finite differential method to obtain the runoff rate at the exit of the watershed. 5. The developed SNUA Model is a type of distributed and event model that considers the spatial distribution of the watershed parameters and simulates the hydrograph on a single storm basis. 6. The results of verification test show that the simulated peak flows agree with the observed in the occurence time but have relative enors in the range of 5.4-40.6% in various flow rates and also show that the simulated total runoff have 6.9-32% of relative errors against the observed. 7. To improve the applicability of the model, it was thought that more studies like the application test to the other watersheds of various types or the addition of the other hydrologk components describing subsurface storages are needed.
Most fields in highland areas are covered with rye or hairy vetch for conservation during a fallow. However, using cover crops needs an effort to sow, and this makes top soil more vulnerable to loss due to surface disturbances. The aims of this study were to develop an automatic seeding-regulator device using a low-price, extensive-use GPS sensors and a DC motors and to evaluate a working efficiency of it after adaptation to partial tillage machine for reducing seeding effort. The amount of runoff water and soil loss was evaluated with partial tillage and simultaneous-seeding after harvesting soybean, in 17% slope lysimeters. In results, the seeding amount with the machine speed was stable between $0.5{\sim}0.8m\;s^{-1}$ of working sections. The automatic control device of seeding-rate could be enough to solve the slip problems of power selecting supply system or five four-wheel drive device. In partial tillage and simultaneous seeding, runoff water was 11.6% ($1.8m^3ha^{-1}$) of the scatter-seeding control ($15.5m^3ha^{-1}$) and soil loss was 13.2% ($7kg\;ha^{-1}$) of the scatter-seeding control ($53kg\;ha^{-1}$). These results suggest that partial tillage and simultaneous-seeding methods are very effective in decreasing work effort and soil loss of sloped land.
