NURBS Interpolator for Controlling the Surface Roughness (표면 거칠기를 고려한 NURBS 보간기)

  • Finish machining of a curved surface is often carried out by an NC system with curve interpolation in the field. This NURBS interpolation adopts a feedrate optimizing strategy based on both the geometrical information and dynamic properties. In case of a finish cut using a ball-end mill. the curve interpolator needs to take the machining process into account for more improved surface, while reducing the polishing time. In this study, the effect of low machinability at the bottom of a tool on surface roughness is also considered. A particular curve interpolation algorithm is proposed for generating feedrate commands which are able to control the roughness of a curved surface. The simulation of the machined surface by the proposed algorithm was carried out, and experimental results are presented.

  • An adequate method for the prediction of machining errors is essential to improve productivity and product quality. But it is known that there is a remarkable difference between values calculated by conventional roughness model and measured values of actual machined surfaces under high efficient cutting condition. This paper introduces the theoretical analysis of characteristic lines of cut remainder to evaluate a geometrical surface roughness accurately. In this study, analytic equations of the characteristic lines are derived from the surface generation mechanism of ball end milling considering the actual trochoidal trajectories of cutting edges. The predicted results are compared with the results of conventional roughness model.

  • The achievable machining accuracy depends upon the level of the micro-engineering, and the today's accuracy targets are dimensional tolerances in the order of 10nm and surface roughness in the order of 1nm. Such requirements cannot be satisfied by the conventional machining processes. Single point diamond turning is the one of new techniques which can produce the parts with such accuracy limits. The aims of this thesis are to get a better understanding of the complex cutting process with a diamond tool and, consequently, to develope a predicting model of a turned surface profile. In order to predict the turned surface profile, a numerical model has been developed. By means of this model, the influence of the operational settings-the material properties of the workpiece, the geometry of the cutting tool and the dynamic behaviour of the lathe-and their influences via the cutting forces upon the surface roughness have been estimated.

  • The structural Charactesties and adhesion of chemically vapor deposited TiN film on stain less steels have been investated as functions of deposition temperature, surface roughness of sub state, and types of substrates. The grain zine and the lattice parameter of TiN film decreased with decreasing roughness of substates. The(200) preferred orientation was developed dominatly and the lattlice parameter decreased as temperature intereased reardless of the surdless roughnessand type of the substrates used. The surface morphology of TiN film changed from bushed crystal to a plate and then to pyamidal dense crystals with an increase in the deposition temperature. The adhesion of TiN films increased with coating thinkness and decreased with surface roughness in general. The calculations using a Bejamin & Weaver's model have been compard. Maximum valuse of adhesion energy calculated using Laguier's model were W304=331Jm-2,w410=113Jm-2,andW430=107jm-2

  • Currently hydrofluoric acid (HF) based glass etch method is widely used for anti-glare (AG) surface treatment since it can effectively alleviate the specular reflection problem with relatively low processing cost. However, due to the environmental regulation and safety problem, it is essential to develop alternative technology to replace this method. For this, in this paper, we propose sand blasting based AG surface treatment method for display glass. To characterize the sand blasting process, surface roughness, haze, surface durability, and flatness are considered as process outputs and central composite design (CCD) method and response surface model (RSM) method are applied to model each process output. Models for surface roughness and haze showed 96.44% and 97.24% of R-squared values, respectively and they can be applied to optimize AG surface treatment process for various haze level requirements of display industries.

  • 3D printers are widely used to verify the designs in the early stage of product development, and are required to have short build time. However, the build time is still too long for a quick design review for engineers. This research focuses on how to split the prototype in order to reduce the build time and improve surface roughness. In order to verify the feasibility of prototype splitting, the build time and the roughness have been experimentally measured for various parts and build orientations. Based on the experimental results an expert system was developed for splitting the original CAD mod el by using an efficient splitting method. It can recommend a splitting plane based on build time, surface roughness and the number of divided parts. It is shown that the model splitting reduces the build time significantly and improves surface quality wit bout rough surfaces where the support was removed.

Soil Moisture Content Estimation Using Remote Sensing Technique (원격 측정 기법을 이용한 토양 함수비의 측정)

  • Remote sensing technique is based on the estimation of land surface characteristics from the measurement of the emitted radiation from the earth. The hydrologically related parameters studied using this approach include surface temperature, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, precipitation and snow. This study introduces a method for estimating moisture content of a bare soil from the observed and simulated brightness temperature. In a bare soil, microwave emission depends on moisture content, soil temperature, and surface roughness. The method is based on a radiative transfer model with some modifications of Fresnel reflection coefficient to take into account the effect of surface roughness. One smooth bare field and two fields with different surface roughness are prepared for the study. The results indicate that the effect of surface roughness is to increase the soil's brightness temperature and to reduce the slope of regression between brightness temperature and moisture contents.

  • The light pattern reflected from a machined surface contains some information like roughness and profile on the projected surface as expected in the Beckmann-Spizzichino model. In applying the theory into a real reliable measuring device, many parameters such as incident light power, wave length, spot size should be kept a constant optical value. However, the reflected light power is likely to change with the environmental noise, the variations of the light source, the reflectivity of the surface, etc. even though the incident light power is constant. In this study, a method for adjusting the incident light power to keep the reflected light power projected on a CMOS image sensor constant was proposed and a simple adjustment algorithm based on PI digital control was examined. Experiments verified that the proposed method made the surface roughness measurement better and more reliable even under variations of the height of light source.

  • In general, stereolithography parts is not suitable for master pattern. Because of its bad surface roughness. Therefore, To reduce roughness it requires post-process that is depending on user skill and takes long time to do. This study aims to develop an expert system which can select an optimal build orientation, reduce roughness and shorten post-processing time. Genetic Algorithm was introduced for optimization. A simplified computation model was developed for real-time response. For accurate roughness estimation, mterpolation of experimental data was implemented.
