The purpose of the current study was to investigate histologic changes in the alveolar bone of the lower molar region subsequent to the loss of their opposite molars, and to characterize chemical alterations by utilization of histochemical procedures. Twenty five rats(Sprague Dawley), approximately 150-200gm body weight, were used in this experiment. In the treated animals, upper molars were removed. The animals were decapitated by groups at the following intervals after teeth removals: 10th, 20th, 50th, 70th and 100th day. The normal, untreated rats were used as controls. The molar region of lower jaw, including the intact alvelar bone and teeth was dissected and specimens were decalcified in 3% formic acid. After the tissues were fully decalcified, the specimens were embedded in celloidin and sectioned in mesiodistal plane. These sections were stained in the following staining methods. Mallory azan stain and hematoxylin-eosin stain were utilized for structural evaluation. Polysaccharides were demonstrated by means of the PAS reaction. Acidmucopolysaccharides were studied by means of the colloidal iron stain. Alloxan-Schiff reaction was used for protein. The results were as follows: 1) In the control animals, bone resorption was noted in the distal alveolar bone proper and bone apposition was shown in the mesial alveolar bone proper. But in the treated animals, bone apposition was observed on the mesial and distal walls of the alveolus and osteoclastic activity was not noted in any walls. 2) Bone apposition was most prominent from the 10th to 20th day after treatment. 3) Appositional growth of cementum along the surface of root was prominent from the 50th to 70th day after treatment. 4) In the area where osteoblastic activity was apparent, osteoblasts were stained strongly in the PAS and alloxan-Schiff reaction. A plastic resorption line showed strong alloxan-Schiff reaction. 5) In the colloidal iron stain, the alveolar wall adjacent to the cementum apposition area was stained more strongly than the other areas.
Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using a mineralized bone cortical allograft (MBCA), with or without a resorbable collagenous membrane derived from bovine pericardium, on alveolar bone remodeling after immediate implant placement in a dog model. Methods: Six mongrel dogs were included. The test and control sites were randomly selected. Four biradicular premolars were extracted from the mandible. In control sites, implants without an allograft or membrane were placed immediately in the fresh extraction sockets. In the test sites, an MBCA was placed to fill the gap between the bone socket wall and implant, with or without a resorbable collagenous membrane. Specimens were collected after 1 and 3 months. The amount of residual particles and new bone quality were evaluated by histomorphometry. Results: Few residual graft particles were observed to be closely embedded in the new bone without any contact with the implant surface. The allograft combined with a resorbable collagen membrane limited the resorption of the buccal wall in height and width. The histological quality of the new bone was equivalent to that of the original bone. The MBCA improved the quality of new bone formation, with few residual particles observed at 3 months. Conclusions: The preliminary results of this animal study indicate a real benefit in obtaining new bone as well as in enhancing osseointegration due to the high resorbability of cortical allograft particles, in comparison to the results of xenografts or other biomaterials (mineralized or demineralized cancellous allografts) that have been presented in the literature. Furthermore, the use of an MBCA combined with a collagen membrane in extraction and immediate implant placement limited the extent of post-extraction resorption.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate histologically the resorption and tissue response of various resorbable collagen membranes used for guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration, using a subcutaneous model on the dorsal surface of the rat. In this study, 10 Sprague-Dawley male rats (mean BW 150gm) were used and the commercially available materials included acellular dermal matrix allograft, porcine collagen membrane, freeze-dried bovine dura mater. Animals were sacrificed at 2,6 and 8 weeks after implantation of various resorbable collagen membranes. Specimens were prepared with Hematoxylin-Eosin stain for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Resorption : Inner portion of porcine collagen membrane was resorbed a lot at 6 weeks, but its function was being kept for infiltration of another tissues were not observed. Freeze-dried bovine dura mater and acellular dermal allograft were rarely resorbed and kept their structure of outer portion for 8 weeks. 2. Inflammatory reactions : Inflammatory reaction was so mild and foreign body reaction didn't happen in all of resorbable collagen membranes, which showed their biocompatibility. 3. In all of resorbable collagen membranes, multinuclcated giant cells by foreign body reactions were not observed. Barrier membranes have to maintain their function for 4-6 weeks in guided tissue regeneration and at least 8 weeks in guided bone regeneration. According to present study, we can find all of the resorbable collagen membranes kept their function and structure for 8 weeks and were rarely resorbed. Foreign body reaction didn't happen and inflammatory reaction was so mild histologically. Therefore, all of collagen membranes used in this experiment were considered proper resorbable membranes for guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration.
It has been demonstrated that intracoronal bleaching of pulpless teeth may result in cervical root resorption. Several authors postulated that bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide penetrated through the dentinal tubules to damage the surrounding tissues that cause cervical root resorption. The purpose of this study was to suggest on in vitro model for direct determination of hydrogen peroxide penetration through CEJ during nonvital bleaching. In addition, this model permit the quantification of the amount of hydrogen peroxide penetrated during the procedure. Freshly extracted intact premolars, removed for orthodontic reasons were used. Root canal treatment was performed in each tooth. And then the outer surface and crown portion of the teeth was sealed with wax leaving the CEJ. The prepared teeth mounted on the wax laminates were placed in plastic assay tubes containing 1.5ml bidistilled water with their entire root, including the CEJ, submerged in the solution. The teeth were dividied into four groups. Thermo group : thermocatalytic bleaching with superoxol Walk group: walking bleaching with sodium perborate & superoxol Combi group : combination of thermocatalytic & walking bleaching Dw group : walking bleaching with sodium perborate & water The bleaching procedure was performed three times. The bleaching intervals were at 3 days. The hydrogen peroxide present in the assay system was added to ferrous ammonium sulfate resulting in ferric ion release. Upon the addition of potassium thiocyanate a ferrithiocyanate complex results, which absorbs light at the wavelength of 467nm. The radicular penetration of hydrogen peroxide in the four groups was assessed directly using spectrophotometer. The amount of hydrogen peroxide in the samples tested is determined by comparing them with a standard curve generated by known amounts of hydrogen peroxide. The results were obtained as follows : 1. In all experimental groups except the Dw group showed lower penetration amount in day 4 than day 1, there was statistical importance in the difference (P<0.05). 2. After 3rd treatment, Thermo group showed slightly increased value and narrow distribution. Walk group showed much more penetration amount and widely dispersed value. Value of Combi group showed wide distribution without regard to treatment time, but value of Dw group evenly distributed. 3. Thermo group, Walk group and Dw group showed a tendency of increasing penetration amount with increasing treatment times(P<0.01), but Combi group revealed no statistically important differences. 4. Combi group showed the highest degree of penetration. Walk group showed lower penetration than Combi group. Thermo group & Dw group showed lower than Walk group. 5. Cervical root permeability to hydrogen peroxide varied from 0 to 35 %.
Although the purpose of orthodontic treatment is to increase the function and aesthetics of the jaws as well as to increase stability, there are side effects from the treatment itself such as root resorption and alveolar bone resorption. Such resoiption of the apical root is unpredictable and may even proceed into the dentin layer. Once the process has begun, it is irreversible. By evaluating the effects of different oral habits, especially that ef nail biting, and their correlation with the root and the periodontal tissues, the appropriate biomechanics for orthodontic treatment can be taken into consideration. The possibility of root resorption and alveolar bone loss during orthodontic treatment can also be considered. Also, any legal problems that might occur may be pondered as well. Among the male md female patients of the ages 10~15, 63 were chosen as the test group with known nail biting habits at time of examination and within the same age range those without nail biting habits as the control group. The test group was composed of 30 males and 33 females. The control group had 31 males and 32 females. The result from this study were as follows : 1. Of the 63 patients of both the test and control groups, the male-to-female-ratio was 1:1, and had no statistically significant difference in male and female root resorption. 2. In comparing crown length of the test and control groups, no significant difference existed, but in root length, maxillary and mandibular right and left central incisors and mandibular right lateral incisors had a smaller value. (p<0.001) 3. Average crown-to-root ratio of the test group on the periapical view show a noticeably high value for the maxillary and mandibular right and left central incisors and mandibular right and left lateral incisors. (p<0.01) 4. In comparing and evaluating the alveolar bone loss measured from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar bone crest, mesial surfaces of the maxillary and mandibular right and left central incisors and distal surface of maxillary right central incisor of the test group showed greater loss of crestal bone than the control. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of formocresol and glutaraldehyde to tooth germs and periapical tissues after perforation of interradicular portion of pulpal floor and application of physiological saline solution in control groups, formocresol and glutaraldehyde in experimental groups. The following results were obtained 1. In control groups, normal healing processes were seen, and, on the sixteenth day, the epithelization of injured areas was completed. Inflammatory reactions were limited to the injured surface, and the underlying alveolar bone were normal and successive tooth germs were normal. 2. In both formocresol groups and glutaraldehyde groups, tissue reactions were identical. Inflammatory reactions were slightly compared with control groups, but the surface epithelizations were delayed compared with control group. 3. In both formocresol and glutaraldehyde groups, necrosis was seen in superficial tissue of bone marrow, and, at 24th day, center area of bone marrow on the successive tooth germs were losed and replaced with connective tissue, and superficial soft tissue of the injured area was connected with soft tissue on the successive tooth germ. In remaining alveolar bone, osteoclastic reaction was remarkable. 4. In both formocresol and glutaraldehyde groups, there is no injury to the successive tooth germs. 5. In both formocresol and glutaraldehyde groups, periodontal membrane was normal, but the partial resorption of cementum and dentin near the injured area were seen.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics with the Ca/P ratios of 1.62, 1.67 and 1.72 were prepared and their dissolution behaviors in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were investigated. It appeared that surface dissolution of the ceramics was initiated from grain boundaries after 3 days of immersion in water. Following 10 days of immersion, microstructural disintergration of HA was severs for non-stoichiometric compounds, I.e Ca/P ratios of 1.62 and 1.72. Notably, a micron-sized circular cavity similar to lacunae, which can be generally formed in osteoclastic resorption process, was observed.
A dead dove was found on the road and submitted for diagnosis. The bird was severely emaciated, with deformation in its facial area. Grossly, white coalescing nodules were seen on the cut surface of the nasal cavity. Histopathologically, epithelial cells of the upper respiratory tract were markedly proliferated, with ballooning degeneration, down growth of the rete ridge, and large eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Parakeratotic hyperkeratosis and focal necrotic focus was present in the proliferative area. The facial bones showed partial bone resorption. Transmission electron microscopy revealed numerous viral particles in epithelial cells with dumbbell-shaped bodies, consistent with poxvirus.
The author observed the periodontal tissue reactions to the root canal sealers after root perforations were made intentionally in dogs. The perforations were made on 74 teeth from 7 dogs. The experiments were performed in two different modes of procedure: In Group I, the perforations were made through the root canal to the alveolar bone. In Group II, the perforations were made from site of alveolar bone to the root canals. The perforated canals in Group I were filled with gutta-percha and root canal cements; Calxyl (Calcium Hydroxide in Ringer's solution), Zinc Oxide -Eugenol cement (Z.O.E.), Kerr sealer (Rickert's paste) and AH 26 (Epoxy Resin preparations). The perforated canals in Group II were sealed with Calxyl, Z.O.E, Kerr sealer and AH26. Histologic examinations of periodontal tissue reactions were observed at various time intervals. The results were as follows; l. Cementum deposition on the perforated root surface in Group II cases showed slightly earlier than that of Group I. Healing tendency of injured alveolar bone in Group II was greater than that of Group I. 2. According to the time increase after experiment, the cementum deposition on the site of perforated dentin in Group II with intact pulp was notably thickened. Secondary dentin deposition on the root canal surface where the dentinal tubles were cut was also found in similar pattern. 3. In the cases of perforated canals sealed with Calxyl both in Group I and Group II, It revealed the earliest cementum-deposition among 4 different root canal cements. In the cases of perforated canals sealed with Kerr sealer and AH26, the cementum-deposition on the root surface was not found. 4. Proliferation of epithelium around the perforated area was first seen at 5-week cases in Group I, and at 3-week cases in Group II. 5. In all cases, dentin resorption on the site of perforated root surface was always occured.
The purpose of this study was to observe the tissue response to the orthodontic force applied immediately after buccal horizontal subapical osteotomy of maxilla. Five mongrel cats weighing about 2.5 Kg were used for this experiment. The left upper canine and premolar of each cat served as a experimental side and the right ones as a control side. On the experimental side, a 100gm orthodontic force was applied between the upper canine and premolar immediately after the osteotomy. On the control side, the same orthodontic force was applied without the osteotomy. After 7days, the experimental animals were sacrificed. The results were as follows: 1. In the pressure zones of the experimental group, significant increase of osteoclasts and direct resolution along the alveolar bone surface was observed as compared with those of the control group. 2. In the pressure 2ones of the experimental group, a less extensive hyalinized zone was observed than those of the control group. 3. In the pressure zones of both group, no root resorption was found. 4. Tn the tension zones of the experimental group, new bone deposition increased along the alveolar bone surface as compared with those of the control group. In conclusion, the results suggest the possibility that early orthodontic treatment after orthognathic surgery may have some benefits if the stability of the repositioned segment at surgery is secured.
