Magnesium and its alloys are prone to be corroded, thus surface treatments improving corrosion resistance are always required for practical applications. As a surface treatment of magnesium alloys, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), creating porous stable oxide layer by a high voltage discharge in electrolyte, enhances the corrosion resistance. However, due to superhydrophilicity of the porous oxide layer, which easily allow the penetration of corrosive media toward magnesium alloys substrate, post-treatments inhibiting the transfer of corrosive media in porous oxide layer are required. In this work, we employed a hydrophobizing method to enhance the corrosion resistance of PEO treated Mg alloy. Three types of hydrophobizing techniques were used for PEO layer. Thin Teflon coating with solvent evaporation, self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coating of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) based on solution method and SAM coating of perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) based on vacuum method significantly enhances corrosion resistance of PEO treated Mg alloy with reducing the contact of water on the surface. In particular, the vacuum based FDTS coating on PEO layer shows the most effective hydrophobicity with the highest corrosion resistance.
The electrocoating for automotive bodies is pigmented with a mixture of titanium dioxide and kaolin. In this study, the effects of titanium dioxide and kaolin contents in coating on electrodeposition process, drying, and surface properties such as surface roughness, gloss, impact resistance and corrosion resistance were investigated. Titanium dioxide and kaolin in coating do not have a decisive effect on curing reaction during drying and corrosion resistance but on gloss, surface roughness, impact resistance and electrodeposition process of coating. According to its size and shape on coating surface, pigment contents increased during drying process. However, the contents of kaolin and $TiO_2$ in coating didn't affect the corrosion resistance on zinc phosphated substrate, and the curing properties.
A design procedure for a ship with minimum resistance had been developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The frictional resistance coefficient was estimated by the ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line formula and the wave-making resistance coefficient was evaluated by the potential-flow panel method with the nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. The geometry of the hull surface was represented and modified by B-spline surface modeling technique during the optimization process. The Series 60 ($C_B$=0.60) hull was selected as a parent hull to obtain an optimized hull that produces minimum resistance. The models of the parent and optimized hull forms were tested at calm water condition in order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed methodolgy.
The goals of the paper are to understand the impact damage behavior and identify the effect of surface protective materials on impact resistance in filament wound composite pressure vessels. For these, a series of low velocity impact tests was performed on specimens cutting from the full scale pressure vessel by the instrumented impact testing machine. The specimens are classified into two types, which are with and without surface protective material. The visualization for impact damage by two different impactors is made by metallurgical microscope. Based on the impact force history and damage, the impact resistance parameters were employed, rod its validity in identifying the damage resistance of filament wound composite pressure vessel was reviewed. As the results, the impact resistance of the filament wound composites and its dependency on the surface protective material were evaluated quantitatively
The response of AISI 310 type austenitic stainless steel to the novel low temperature plasma carburizing process has been investigated in this work. This grade of stainless steel shows better corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation resistance due to its high chromium and nickel content. In this experiment, plasma carburizing was performed on AISI 310 stainless steel in a D.C. pulsed plasma ion nitriding system at different temperatures in $H_2-Ar-CH_4$ gas mixtures. The working pressure was 4 Torr (533Pa approx.) and the applied voltage was 600 V during the plasma carburizing treatment. The hardness of the samples was measured by using a Vickers micro hardness tester with the load of 100 g. The phase of carburized layer formed on the surface was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The resultant carburized layer was found to be precipitation free and resulted in significantly improved hardness and corrosion resistance.
The stainless steel wire requires good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as drawing ability, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing drawing ability of stainless steel, Ni coating methods have been used in this study. However, there is no information on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of drawed wires after Ni coating. To investigate corrosion resistance and mechanical property of drawed wire, the characteristics of Ni coated wires have been determined by tensile strength tester, hardness tester, field emission scanning microscope, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and potentiodynamic method in 0.1 M HCl. The drawed stainless steel wires showed the strain-induced martensitic structure, whereas non-drawed stainless steel wire showed annealing twin in the matrix of austenitic structure. The hardness and tensile strength of drawed stainless steel wire were higer than that of non-drawed stainless steel wire. Electrochemical measurements showed that, in the case of drawed stainless steel o ire after Ni coating, the corrosion resistance and pitting potential increased compared with non-coated and drawed stainless steel wire due to decrease in the surface roughness.
The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.
Generally, steel is the most commonly used in the industry because of good strength, processability and cost-effectiveness. Steel can be surface-treated such as coating or used as an alloy by adding elements such as Cr, Ni, Zr, and Al to increase corrosion resistance. However, even if steel is used in same environment corrosion resistance is sharply lowered when it is exposed to a high temperature for a fixed or extended period of time due to an overload or other factors. In particular, the use of hot-dip aluminized plated steel, which is used in high-temperature atmospheres, is increasing due to the surface Al2O3 oxide film. This steel necessitates an urgent solution as issues of corrosion resistance limitations often appear. It is an important issue that not only cause analysis but also the research for the surface treatment method that can be solved. Thus, in this study, Cr in which it is expected to be effective in corrosion resistance and heat resistance attempted to deposit on hot dip aluminized plated steel with PVD sputtering. And it was possible to present the surface treatment application of various types of industrial equipment exposed to high temperature and basic design guidelines for use by confirming the corrosion resistance of hot dip Al-Si plated steel with Cr film deposited at high temperature.
Conventional paints for conversion coating applications in steel production derived mainly from water-based polymer dispersions containing several additives actually show good general performance, but suffer from poor scratch and abrasion resistance during use. The reason for this is because the relatively soft organic binder matrix dominates the mechanical surface properties. In order to maintain the high quality and decorative function of coated steel sheets, the mechanical performance of the surface needs to be improved significantly. In fact the wear resistance should be enhanced without affecting the optical appearance of the coatings by using appropriate nanoparticulate additives. In this direction, nanocomposite coating compositions (Nanomer$^{(R)}$) have been derived from water-based polymer dispersions with an increasing amount of surface-modified nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion in order to monitor the effect of degree of filling with rigid nanoparticles. The surface of nanoparticles has been modified for optimum compatibility with the polymer matrix in order to achieve homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion over the matrix. This approach has been extended in such a way that a more expanded hybrid network has been condensed on the nanoparticle surface by a hydrolytic condensation reaction in addition to the quasi-monolayer type small molecular surface modification. It was expected that this additional modification will lead to more intensive cross-linking in coating systems resulting in further improved scratch-resistance compared to simple addition of nanoparticles with quasi-monolayer surface modification. The resulting compositions have been coated on zinc-galvanized steel and cured. The wear resistance and the corrosion protection of the modified coating systems have been tested in dependence on the compositional change, the type of surface modification as well as the mixing conditions with different shear forces. It has been found out that for loading levels up to 50 wt.-% nanoparticles, the mechanical wear resistance remains almost unaffected compared to the unmodified resin. In addition, the corrosion resistance remained unaffected even after $180^{\circ}$ bending test showing that the flexibility of coating was not decreased by nanoparticle addition. Electron microscopy showed that the inorganic nanoparticles do not penetrate into the organic resin droplets during the mixing process but rather formed agglomerates outside the polymer droplet phase resulting in quite moderate cross linking while curing, because of viscosity. The proposed mechanisms of composite formation and cross linking could explain the poor effect regarding improvement of mechanical wear resistance and help to set up new synthesis strategies for improved nanocomposite morphologies, which should provide increased wear resistance.
In oder to improve the wear resistance as well as oxidation resistance at high temperature a AISI H13 steel was treated by a duplex process of calorizing followed by plasma nitriding. The surface properties of the duplex-treated AISI H13 steel was characterized and compared with those treated by single surface process of calorizing and plasma nitriding, in terms of microstruture, microhardness, wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$, and the oxidation behaviours at $700^{\circ}C$, Duplex process on H13 steel had created duplex layer of approximately $190\mu\textrm{m}$ on the surface, and surface microhardness was measured to be above 1450Hv(0.1Kgf). There was considerable improvement of the high temperature wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$ in the duplex-treated steel when both wear volume and weight change due to oxidation were considered. In addition the duplex-treated steel showed an improved high temperature oxidation resistance than the plasma nitrided steel at $700^{\circ}C$.
