  • To better understand the codeposition mechanism of phosphorous, surface pH and potential of cathode were measured during electrodeposition of Ni-P alloys. The pH of cathode surface was measured using a flat-bottom glass pH electrode and a 500 mesh gold gauze as cathode. The cathode surface pH was increased with increasing the current density and always higher than the pH in the bulk solution. As a result of overplotting the surface pH and cathode potential on the Pourbaix diagram, it was found that cathode surface shift to the domain of predominant of $H_2$$PO3$-or $H_2$$PO_2$-. Additionally, new deposition mechanism was suggested that $H_2$ $PO_2$- and $H_2$$PO_3$- play important roles in the deposition reaction of Ni-P alloys.

  • A latitudinal, differential pH distribution is observed in the Northeastern Pacific Ocean with a pH range of 8.15 at high latitude (42 N) to 8.29 at low latitude (23 N). These pH values are generally greater than the calculated equilibrium pH with respect to atmospheric carbon dioxide. If we assume that the calculated equilibrium pH values ae valid, then the surface waters are undersaturated with respect to the atmospheric carbon dioxide during April to June 1966. A high surface pH value of about 8.26 was observed immediately south of the SubarcticBoundary zone near 170 W. This value differs from the equilibration pH by as much as 0.1 unit.

  • Peanut prptein isolate was tested for the purpose of finding out the effect of pH, Sodium Chloride concentration and heat treatment on the solubility, surface hydrophobicity, foam expansion and foam stability. The solubility of peanut protein isolate was affected by pH and showed the lowest value at pH 4.5. When the peanut protein isolate was heated, the solubility decreased at pH 3 and pH 7 but at pH 9 solubility increased. At all pH range, solubility decreased as NaCl was added. The surface hydrophobicity of peanut protein isolate showed the highest value at pH 1.5. Generally, at acidic pH range the surface hydrophobicity was high, but at alkaline region, the surface hydrophobicity increased as the temperature increased. And when NaCl was added, the surface hydrophobicity was also increased. Foam expansion of peanut protein isolate was no significant difference among the values about pH. When the peanut protein was heated and NaCl was added, foam expansion was increased at pH 7. Foam stability was significantly low at pH 4.5 and foam stability was increased at acidic pH region below pH 4.5. At pH 7 and pH 9, heat treatment above $60^{\circ}C$ increased foam stability. When NaCl was added, foam stability was significantly increased at pH 3 and pH 7.

  • The surface of $Li[Ni_{0.35}Co_{0.3}Mn_{0.35}]O_2$ cathode was modified by $[Li,La]TiO_3$ coating using pH controlled coating solution. At low pH values (acidic solution), cathode powders, which is oxides, have a positive surface charge, whereas, they have a negative surface charge at high pH values. As a result, their charge could affect the formation of the coating layer on the surface of cathode powder. To determine the optimal pH value, the surface coating of the pristine powder was carried out at various pH values of the coating solution. The surface morphology of coated samples was characterization by SEM and TEM analyses. Impedance analysis and cyclic voltammogram presented that internal resistance of the cell was dependent upon the pH of coating solution.

  • The effect of H+ and OH- ion concentrations at doped Si semiconductor/pH buffer solution interfaces were investigated in terms of cyclic current-voltage characteristics. The effects of space charge on oppositely doped Si semiconductors, i.e., p-and n-Si semiconductors, can be effectively applied to study the pH effects and the slow surface states at the interfaces. The adsorptions of H+ and OH- inons on the doped Si semiconductor surfaces are physical adsorption rather than chemical adsorption. Adsorptive processes and charging effects of the slow surface states can be explained as the potential barrier variations and the related current-voltage characteristics at the interfaces. Under forward bias, the charged slow surface states on the p-and n-si semiconductor surface are donor and acceptor slow surface states, respectively. The effects of minority carriers on the slow surface states can be neglected at the doped Si semiconductor interfaces.

  • It is investigated that that the physical properties of Glutathione layer formed on gold surfaces may make an effect on the distribution of either gold particle adsorbed to the $TiO_2$ surface or vice versa with the adjustment of the electrostatic interactions. For the investigation, the atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between the surfaces as a function of the salt concentration and pH value. With the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, the forces were quantitatively analyzed to acquire the surface potential and charge density of the surfaces for each salt concentration and each pH value. The surface potential and charge density dependence on the salt concentration was described with the law of mass action, and the pH dependence was explained with the ionizable groups on the surface. The salt concentration dependence of the surface properties, found from the measurement at pH 8 and 11, was consistent with the prediction from the law. It was found that the Glutathione layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the titanium dioxide surfaces at pH 8 and 11, which may be attributed to the ionized-functional-groups of the Glutathione layer.

  • High specific surface area zirconia with acid-basic property was synthesized by precipitation using reflux method or hydrothermal synthesis method using ammonium hydroxide solution as precipitant in the range of pH of Zr solution from 2 to 10. The prepared zirconia was characterized by the nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), isopropanol temperature programmed desorption (IPA-TPD), scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the catalytic activity in the IPA decomposition reaction was correlated with the acid-basic properties. When using reflux method, high pH of Zr solution was required to obtain high fraction of tetragonal zirconia, and pure tetragonal zirconia was possible at pH 9 or higher. High pH was required to obtain high specific surface area zirconia, and the hydrous zirconia synthesized at pH 10 had high specific surface area zirconia of $260m^2g^{-1}$ even after calcination at $600^{\circ}C$. However, hydrothermal synthesis with high pressure under the same conditions resulted in very low specific surface area below $40m^2g^{-1}$ and monoclinic phase zirconia was synthesized. High pH of the solution was required to obtain high specific surface area tetragonal phase zirconia. In hydrothermal synthesis requiring high pressure, monoclinic zirconia was produced irrespective of the pH of the solution, and the specific surface area was relatively low. Zirconia with high specific surface area and tetragonal phase was predominantly acidic compared to basicity and only propylene, which was observed as selective dehydration reaction in IPA decomposition reaction, was produced.

  • Buckwheat protein isolate was tested for the effects of pH, addition of sodium chloride and heat treatment on solubility, emulsion capacities, emulsion stability, surface hydrophobicity, foam capacities and foam stability. The solubility of buckwheat protein isolate was affected by pH and showed the lowest value at pH 4.5, the isoelectric point of buckwheat protein isolate. The solubility significantly as the pH value reached closer to either ends of the pH, i.e., pH 1.0 and 11.0. The effects of NaCl concentration on solubility were as follows; at pH 2.0, the solubility significantly decreased when NaCl was added; at pH 4.5, it increased above 0.6 M; at pH 7.0 it increased; and at pH 9.0 it decreased. The solubility increased above $80^{\circ}C$, at all pH ranges. The emulsion capacity was the lowest at pH 4.5. It significantly increased as the pH approached higher acidic or alkalic regions. At pH 2.0, when NaCl was added, the emulsion capacity decreased, but it increased at pH 4.5 and showed the maximum value at pH 7.0 and 9.0 with 0.6 M and 0.8 M NaCl concentrations. Upon heating, the emulsion capacity decreased at acidic pH's but was maximised at pH 7.0 and 9.0 on $60^{\circ}C$ heat treatment. The emulsion stability was the lowest at pH 4.5 but increased with heat treatment. At acidic pH, the emulsion stability increased with the increase in NaCl concentration but decreased at pH 7.0 and 9.0. Generally, at other pH ranges, the emulsion stability was decreased with increased heating temperature. The surface hydrophobicity showed the highest value at pH 2.0 and the lowest value at pH 11.0. As NaCl concentrationed, the surface hydrophobicity decreased at acidic pH. The NaCl concentration had no significant effects on surface hydrophobicity at pH 7.0, 9.0 except for the highest value observed at 0.8 M and 0.4 M. At all pH ranges, the surface hydrophobicity was increased, when the temperature increased. The foam capacity decreased, with increased in pH value. At acidic pH, the foam capacity was decreased with the increased in NaCl concentration. The highest value was observed upon adding 0.2 M or 0.4 M NaCl at pH 7.0 and 9.0. Heat treatments of $60^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$ showed the highest foam capacity values at pH 2.0 and 4.5, respectively. At pH 7.0 and 9.0, the foam capacity decreased with the increased in temperature. The foam stability was not significantly related to different pH values. The addition of 0.4 M NaCl at pH 2.0, 7.0 and 9.0 showed the highest stability and the addition of 1.0 M at pH 4.5 showed the lowest. The higher the heating temperature, the lower the foam stability at pH 2.0 and 9.0. However, the foam stability increased at pH 4.5 and 7.0 before reaching $80^{\circ}C$.

  • Reactions between gold (Au) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chips and bovine serum albumin (BSA) dissolved in solutions of different pH were investigated. The charge on the BSA depends on the pH of the solution in which it is dissolved. Thus, dissolving BSA in different pH solutions resulted in different charges of BSA. Among the BSA dissolved in solutions with pH 4.01, 7.4, and 10.01, the SPR response was the highest for BSA dissolved in the solution of pH 4.01. To eliminate the response variation owing to the difference in the refractive indices of the solutions, phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was injected into the system after the reaction of BSA with the Au SPR chip had happened. In this case too, the BSA dissolved in the solution with pH 4.01 exhibited the highest response. This may be attributed to the non-uniform distribution of ionic patches on the BSA, which can induce electrostatic attraction to the surface even though BSA has a positive charge at pH 4.01, and the absolute values of the net charge of BSA at pH 4.01 and 7.4 were very close.

  • Dental caries is the most common oral disease. There are many factors contributing to its development, but complete understanding and prevention are not fully known. However, it is possible to remineralize the early enamel curious lesion by fluoride containing remineralization solution. Recently the pH-cycling model has been used to examine the effect of fluoride solution on remineralization of artificial caries in vitro as it can closely simulate the conditions encountered in vivo within a carefully controlled environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralizing effects of supersaturated buffer solutions under pH-cycling model. The specimen with 3mm-diameter was made using mature bovine incisors which has no caries and has sound enamel surface. Early curious lesions were produced by suspending each specimens into demineralization solution at pH 5.0 for 33 hours and the specimen whose surface hardness value ranged from 25 to 45 VHN were used. The pH cycling treatment regimen consisted of 5 min soaks of three treatment solutions four times per days for 15 days and the continuous cycling of demineralization and remineralization were carried out for 15 days. Following the pH-cycling treatment regimen, the specimens' surface microhardness were measured by the Vickers hardness test (VHN) and analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple-range test. 1. The surface microhardness value of supersaturated solution, Senstime, and Gagline groups were increased after pH cycling, and that of supersaturated solution was significantly Increased compared to saline group(P<0.05). 2. The surface remineralization effect of fluoride containing solutions was accelerated by saliva under pH-cycling mode 3. The pH cycling model was considered appropriate to mimic the intra-oral pH changes when evaluating demineralization and remineralization in vitro. Under the results of above study, salivary remineralization effect can be improved by fluoride containing remineralization solution. The pH-cycling model was considered appropriate to mimic the intra-oral pH changes when evaluating demineralization and remineralization in vitro.
