A physical and numerical steady flow impinging jet has been used to simulate the bulk characteristics of a downburst-like wind field. The influence of downdraft tilt and surface roughness on the ensuing wall jet flow has been investigated. It was found that a simulated downdraft impinging the surface at a non-normal angle has the potential for causing larger structural loads than the normal impingement case. It was also found that for the current impinging jet simulations, surface roughness played a minor role in determining the storm maximum wind structure, but this influence increased as the wall jet diverged. However, through comparison with previous research it was found that the influence of surface roughness is Reynolds number dependent and therefore may differ from that reported herein for full-scale downburst cases. Using the current experimental results an empirical model has been developed for laboratory-scale impinging jet velocity structure that includes the influence of both jet tilt and surface roughness.
Water cycle within the human civilization has become important with urbanization. To date, water cycle in the eco-system has been the focus in identifying the degree of water cycle in cities, but in practicality, water cycle within the human civilization system is taking on an increasing importance. While in recent years plans to reuse water have been implemented to restore water cycle in cities, the effect that such reuse has on the entire water cycle system has not been analyzed. The analysis on the effect that water reuse has on urban areas needs to be go beyond measuring the cost-savings and look at the changes brought about in the entire city's water cycle system. This study uses a SWAT model and water balance analysis to review the effects that water reuse has on changes occurring in the urban water cycle system by linking the water cycle within the eco-system with that within the human civilization system. The SWAT model to calculate the components of water cycle in the human civilization system showed that similar to measured data, the daily changes and accumulative data can be simulated. When the amount of water reuse increases in urban areas, the surface outflow, amount of sewer discharge and the discharged amount from sewage treatment plants decrease, leading to a change in water cycle within our human civilization system. The determinant coefficients for reduced surface outflow amount and reduced sewer discharge were 0.9164 and 0.9892, respectively, while the determinant coefficient for reduced discharge of sewage treatment plants was 0.9988. This indicates that with an increase in water reuse, surface flow, sewage and discharge from sewage treatment plants all saw a linear reduction.

The effects of drainage system on evapotranspiration and drainage flows are studied. Data from drainage field experiment at Castalia in North Central Branch, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center were used in this study. A water table management model, ADATP (Agricultural Drainage and Pesticide Transport), which was developed by combining the GLEAMS and the subsurface drainage part of the DRAINMOD model with several modifications, was evaluated and used to predict hydrologic components. The ET is very much affected by the presence of tile drainage system but not significantly affected by the surface drainage system. The combined surface and subsurface drainage system gives the largest total outflow values while the surface drainage only system gives the smallest. Comparisons of model predicted and measured values of surface runoff only, subsurface drainage only, and combined surface runoff and subsurface drainage system are in satisfactory agreement. The model predicted values are within the range of the variations of the observed replications in general. Based on the results of the model evaluation study, it is concluded that ADAPT model can be used to design water table management systems.
The heat and flow characteristics in a single-phase parallel-flow heat exchanger was examined numerically to obtain its optimal shape. A response surface method was introduced to predict its performance approximately with respect to design parameters over design domain. Design parameters are inflow and outflow angle of the working fluid and horizontal and vertical location of inlet and outlet. The evaluation of the relative priority of the design parameters was performed to choose three important parameters in order to use a response surface method. A JF factor was used as an evaluation characteristic value to consider the heat transfer and the pressure drop simultaneously. The JF factor of the optimum model, compared to that of the base model, was increased by about 5.3%.
The Nakdong Estuary Barrage is a tidal river environment where freshwater and seawater meet. This requires systematic monitoring of both surface water discharged from the estuary barrage and submarine groundwater discharge. In this study, upstream hydrograph and water balance analysis were used to calculate the change in water storage and discharge of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage. Submarine groundwater discharge was also calculated based on remote sensing-based digital elevation model data and hydrological modeling data, and compared with the estimated surface water discharge for analysis. Our proposed method can be efficiently applied to water resource management by utilizing remote sensing-based altimeter data other than field measurement. Because submarine groundwater discharge plays a significant role on the coastal environment as well as surface water discharge from an estuary barrage, studies on groundwatersurface water interactions in a river estuary should be sufficiently considered in monitoring the ecosystem of the Nakdong Estuary Barrage.

Low Impact Development(LID) techniques has been attracting attention as a countermeasure to solve frequent flood damage in urban areas. LID is a techniques for returning to the natural hydrological cycle system by infiltrating the runoff from the impervious surface into the soil. The Bio-retention, one of the LID element technology has outflow reduction effect by reserving and infiltrating storm water runoff from watersheds. Recently, a number of studies have been carried out as interest in the reduction of storm water runoff and non-point pollutants in Bio-retention has increased. However, quantitative analysis on the outflow reduction of Bio-retention applied to small watershed is insufficient. In this study, Bio-retention model was constructed in a small watershed using K-LIDM which is capable of hydrologic analysis. When the storage capacity was increased or dividing the Bio-retention and watershed, the outflow reduction effect was 20% according to the storage capacity increase and 5~15% in the distributed Bio-retention system. The results of this analysis will be used as the basic data of future Bio-retention research related to watershed characteristics, vegetation type and soil condition.
A three-dimensional time-dependent coastal ocean model experiment of two different turbulence parameterizations is conducted. One of the turbulence parameterization is the constant eddy-mixing formulation, C1, and the other a stratification dependent eddy-mixing formulation, C2. The flow in C2 in strongly baroclinic, and limits vertical mixing of fresh and saline waters. The outflow discharged from an estuary is highly inertial and form a strong front of plume in C2 than that in C1. Because of the stronger outflow in C2, supercritical flow state, for which the near surface outflow velocity exceeds the baroclinic phase speed, can exist off the mouth of the estuary. The adjustment process of flow in the less saline waters are quite different for C1 and C2, which is dictated by the strongly baroclinic nature of the flow in C2.

Using a variety of chemical geothermometers we estimate the temperature of a deep geothermal reservoir in relation to thermal groundwater in the Bugok area, southern Korea, in order to assess the potential use of geothermal energy in South Korea. Thermal water at Bugok has been exploited down to about 400 m below the land surface and shows the highest outflow temperatures (up to $78{\circ}C$) in South Korea. Based on the hydrochemical data and occurrence, groundwater in Bugok can be classified into three groups: $Na-SO_4$ type thermal groundwater (CTGW) occurring in the central part (about 0.24 $km^2$) $Ca-HCO_3$ type cold groundwater (SCGW) occurring in shallow peripheral parts of CTGW; and the intermediate type groundwater (STGW). CTGW waters are typical of thermal water in the area, because they have the highest outflow temperatures and contain very high concentrations of Na, K and $SiO_2$ due to the sufficient reaction with silicate minerals in deep reservoir. Their enriched $SO_4$ was likely formed by gypsum dissolution. The major ion composition of CTGW shows the general approach to a partial equilibrium state with rocks at depth. The application of various alkali ion geothermometers yields temperature estimates in the range of 88 to $198{\circ}C$ for the thermal reservoir. Multiple mineral equilibrium calculation indicates asimilar but narrower temperature range between about 100 and $155{\circ}C$. These temperature estimates are not significantly higher than the measured outflow temperatures for CTGW Considering the heat loss during the ascent- of thermal waters, this fact may suggest that a thermal reservoir in the study area is likely located at relatively shallow depths (possibly close to the depth of preexisting wells). Therefore, we suggest a high potential for geothermal energy development around the Bugok area in southern Korea.

Changes of chemical properties by times of the reclaimed tidal land soils and soil surface water, underground infiltration water with precipitation-runoff on natural meteological condition in the unripened tidal reclaimed paddy fields were investigated. This study was carried out to use environment-friendly farm land in the reclaimed tidal lands. The soils used in this study were saline-alkaline soils with the high $Na^+$ and $Mg^{++}$ content. As the results of investigation outflow loading of nutriments through outflow water in the unripened tidal reclaimed paddy fields by precipitation during the survey period, nutriments equivalent to T-N $1{\sim}2\;kg\;10a^{ -1}$ and T-P $0.01{\sim}0.02\;kg\;10a^{-1}$ from in the unripened tidal lands were discharged. Besides, the results of comparison losses of cation through outflow water showed $Na^+>\;K^+>\;Mg^{++}\;>\;Ca^{++}$, and the highest appeared water discharge of $Na^+$. In case of saemangeum reclaimed tidal land soils water discharge of cations showed $Ca^{++}$ 1.3 kg $10a^{-1}$, $Mg^{++}$ 1.6 kg $10a^{-1}$, $Na^+$ 17.7 kg $10a^{-1}$, and $K^+$ 3.2 kg $10a^{-1}$ respectively. On the other hand, in case of koheung reclaimed tidal lands soils water discharge of cations showed $Ca^{++}$ 18.1 kg $10a^{-1}$, $Mg^{++}$ 31.2 kg $10a^{-1}$, $Na^+$ 320.8 kg $10a^{-1}$ and $K^+$ 51.2 kg $10a^{-1}$ respectively.

The heat and flow characteristics in a single-phase parallel-flow heat exchanger was examined numerically to obtain its optimal shape. A response surface method was introduced to approximately predict its performance with respect to the design parameters over the design domain. The inflow/outflow angle of the working fluid, the location of inlet/outlet, the protruding height of flat tube and the height of header were chosen as a design parameter The evaluation of the relative importance of the design parameters was performed based on a sensitivity analysis. An efficiency index was used as an evaluation characteristics value to simultaneously consider both the heat transfer and the pressure drop. The efficiency index of the optimum model, compared to that of the base model, was increased by 9.3%.
