  • Flow-induced voids during resin impregnation and poor fiber wetting have known to be highly detrimental to the performance of composite parts manufactured by resin transfer molding(RTM) process. In this study, in order to overcome these serious problems encountered in RTM, the effects of surface modification by using silane coupling agent as a surface modifier on the flow characteristics, the wetting between resin and fiber, and void content were investigated. For the experiments of microscopic flow visualization and curing in a beam mold, glass fiber mats having plain weaving structure and epoxy resin were used. Modifying the fiber surface was found to result in a significant decrease of dynamic contact angle between resin and fiber and increase of wicking rate. Therefore, it was confirmed that the surface modification employed in this study could improve the wettability of reinforcing fibers as well as micro flow behavior. In addition, It was revealed that high temperature and low penetration rate of the resin are more favorable processing conditions to reduce the dynamic contact angle. However, surface modified fiber mat was found to have lower permeability than the unmodified one, which may be explained in terms of the decrease of contact time between resin and fiber owing to improvement of wetting. It was also exhibited that surface modification had a significant influence on void formation in RTM process, resulting in a decrease of overall void content due to the improvement of wetting in cured composite parts.

  • Ceria supported on various commercial $TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared by wet-impregnation method. We confirmed that the correlation between physicochemical properties of $TiO_2$ supports and SCR activities. Physicochemical properties of the various $TiO_2$ were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and pH analysis. Ce/Ti catalyst exhibited different SCR activities with respect to physicochemical properties of $TiO_2$. An excellent activity was obtained as the surface area of $TiO_2$ increased. In the case of CeOx surface density, the excellent activity in a range of $2.5{\sim}14.5CeOx/nm^2$ was achieved and the activity tended to decrease above $14.5CeOx/nm^2$. The O/Ti mole ratio of $TiO_2$ in the range of 1.32 to 1.79 showed an excellent SCR activity. It was also confirmed that the pH of the $TiO_2$ has no effects on the SCR activity. In order to achieve excellent SCR activities, ceria oxide should be supported on $TiO_2$ possessing a high specific surface area and certain O/Ti mole ratio. In addition, the catalyst with the low CeOx surface density resulted from the high dispersed ceria oxide should be prepared.

  • SPE-composites which was prepared with impregnation-reduction method for hydroen production were investigated with morphological and electrochemical analysis. As Pt reagent's concentration increased, Pt loadings increased. However, reductant's concentration had a little effect on Pt loadings. By the morphological analysis, it was found that Pt was deposited inside of SPE. Furthermore, with electrochemical analysis, we found that Pt loading, electricity, roughness factor and active surface area were $2.05mg/cm^2$, 14.20 mC, 21.55, $10.51cm^2/mg$ respectively at reducing agent concentration 0.05 mol/L. Therefore, we found the deposited Pt inside of SPE would give an effect on electrical characteristics of SPE-composites.

  • A new magnetic semiconductor material was synthesized to enable separation after a liquid-type photocatalysis process. Core@shell-structured $CuFeS_2@TiO_2$ magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by a combination of solvothermal and wet-impregnation methods for photocatalysis applications. The materials obtained were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible, photoluminescence spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements, and cyclic voltammetry. This study confirmed that the light absorption of $CuFeS_2$ was shifted significantly to the visible wavelength compared to pure $TiO_2$. Moreover, the resulting hydrogen production from the photo-splitting methanol/water solution after 10 hours was more than 4 times on the core@shell structured $CuFeS_2@TiO_2$ nanocatalyst than on either pure $TiO_2$ or $CuFeS_2$.

  • In this study, Pt/Pd (1.1), PtPd (2:1) and PtPd (3:1) binary catalysts and Pt/Ru/Pd (5:4:1) ternary catalyst were designed. The catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method using $NaBH_4$ as a reducing agent. A good catalyst for methanol oxidation requires low on-set potential, stable durability and low activation energy. In order to investigate the catalytic activity for the methanol oxidation, electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were peformed in sulfuric acid with/without methanol solution. In order to calculate the activation energy of the reaction, electrochemical measurements were also tested at different temperatures. For investigation of the structural analysis such as particle size and alloying, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis were used. In order to identify the role of the Pd and to determine the composition of the surface of the Pt/Pd nanoparticles, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was investigated. The XPS spectra of Pd showed that Pd appears only as a metallic state in the binary catalysts. The chemical states of Pt in PtPd catalysts are both metallic and oxidative. Polarization curves and power density data were obtained by testing the DMFC unit cell performance of PtPd and PtRuPd catalysts. These data showed that Pt/Pd (2:1) and Pt/Ru/Pd (5:4:1) have better performance than Pt and Pt/Ru, respectively.

  • This study is proposed to investigate the effect of electrode preparation method for Alkaline Fuel Cell using NaOH as an electrolyte on the Fuel Cell performance. The materials used for the preparation of electrode are Pt and Ag on Vulcan XC-72. Surface area of Vulcan XC-72 have different values according to the pretreatment conditions and the dispersion of Pt is dependent on the impregnation Particle size of Pt impregnated on unpretreated carbon was observed to be $20{\sim}40{\AA}$ and that on pretreated carbon in $N_2$ stream at $950^{\circ}C$ was found to be finely dispersed less then $15{\AA}$. The electrode performance was affected by the particle size of metals and operating temperature. It was revealed from this study that the optimum particle size about $30{\AA}$ and optimum temperature range is between $90{\sim}100^{\circ}C$.

  • Thick films of $LaNiO_{3}$ having perovskite structure impregnated with indium and bismuth oxides have been used as sensing material for acetonitrile ($CH_{3}CN$) gas. The sensor response for $CH_{3}CN$ is quite good with an excellent recovery for partial pressure from 3 ppm to 20 ppm between 200 and $250^{\circ}C$. $LaNiO_{3}$ alone has exhibited low response, but after impregnation of $In_{2}O_{3}$ and $Bi_{2}O_{3}$ have given increased sensitivity even with 3 ppm partial pressure of $CH_{3}CN$ at $200^{\circ}C$. It is assumed that $CH_{3}CN$ is undergoing oxidation reaction on surface of the film.

  • As the major methanol fueled vehicle exhaust components, formaldehyde & methanol conversion over the existing commercial 3-way catalyst was examined in a labolatory tains different Ag loadings on commercial 3-way catalyst, and german commercial catalysts for methanol engine exhaust manufactured by a commercial manufacturer. Silver catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation of silver nitrate solution on commercial 3-way catalyst. These catalysts were characterized with BET Surface area and pore size distribution. In general, the formaldehyde(HCHO) conversion of the tested catalysts was similar to that of methanol$(CH_3OH)$. At 100$^\circ$C, which is equivalent to the cold start condition, 5wt% Ag cat. showed the most excellent HCHO and $CH_3OH$ conversion. The order of activity for conversion of HCHO & $CH_3OH$ to carbon dioxide and water vapor was as follows ; 5wt% Ag/3-way cat.>2wt% Ag/3-way cat.>german cat. front(1) > german cat. rear(2) > 10wt% Ag/3-way cat.> commercial 3-wat catalyst. However there was no significant activity difference between those tested catalysts in the hot run condition of 400$^\circ$C. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Ag-modified 3-way catalyst was the most effective and practical catalyst system which could be capable of removal the HCHO and methanol at the special condition of low temperature such as cold start condition.

  • Common reed (Fragmites australis), a local invasive grass, was investigated as a possible feedstock for the production of activated carbon. Dried crushed stems were subjected to impregnation with phosphoric acid (30, 40 and 50%) followed by pyrolysis at $400{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ with final washing and drying. Obtained carbons were characterized by determining: carbon yield, ash content, slurry pH, textural properties and capacity to remove color bodies from factory-grade sugar liquor. Produced carbons possessed surface area up to 700 $m^2/g$, total pore volumes up to 0.37 $cm^3/g$, and proved to be microporous in nature. Decolorization of hot sugar liquor at $80^{\circ}C$ showed degrees of color removal of 60 up to 77% from initial color of 1100~1300 ICU, at a carbon dose of 1.0 g/100 ml liquor. No correlation seems to hold between synthesis conditions and % R but depends on the degree of microporosity. A commercial activated carbon N showed a comparative better color removal capacity of 91%. Common reed proved to be a viable carbon precursor for production of good adsorbing carbon suitable for decolorization in the sugar industry, as well as in other environmental remediation processes.
