While melting glaciers due to global warming have facilitated the development of polar routes, Arctic vessels require reliable anti-icing methods to prevent hull icing. Currently, the existing anti-icing method, i.e., the heating coil method, has disadvantages, such as disconnection and power inefficiency. Therefore, a carbon nanotube-based surface heating element method was developed to address these limitations. In this study, the numerical analysis of the surface heating element method was performed using ANSYS. The numerical analysis included conjugate heat transfer and computational fluid dynamics to consider the conduction solids and the effects of wind speed and temperature in cold environments. The numerical analysis method of the surface heating element method was validated by comparing the experimental results of the heating coil method with the numerical analysis results (under the -30 ℃ conditions). The surface heating element method demonstrated significantly higher efficiency, ranging from 56.65-80.17%, depending on the conditions compared to the heating coil method. Moreover, even under extreme environmental conditions (-45 ℃), the surface heating element method satisfied anti-icing requirements. The surface heating element method is more efficient and economical than the heating coil method. However, proper heat flux calculation for environmental conditions is required to prevent excessive design.
In this study, a low temperature growth of high-quality carbon nanotubes on glass substrate using a local surface heating without heating damage to substrate was tried and characterized. The local joule heating was induced to only Ni/Ti metal film on glass substrate by applying voltage to the film. It was estimated that local surface joule heating method could heat the metal surface locally up to around $1200^{\circ}C$ by voltage control. We could successfully obtain high-quality carbon nanotubes grown at $300^{\circ}C$ by applying 125 V for joule heating as same as carbon nanotubes grown at $900^{\circ}C$.
This article investigated the effects of stainless steel plate-patterns bonded to aluminum frypan on the thermal distortion and surface temperature of the frypan during gas or induction heating. Two different stainless steel plate-patterns were employed: type A contains only circular holes and type B has not only circular holes but also vacant spaces of 0.5 mm thick and 40 mm long straight line crossing 60 mm long curved line. The bottom of the frypan was distorted during heating when type A stainless steel plate-bonded frypan while no significant thermal distortion was observed for type B stainless steel plate-bonded frypan during heating. Temperature of the frypan surface showed the same trend during gas heating, irrespective of stainless steel plate-patterns. During induction heating, however, the frypan with type B stainless steel plate-pattern showed lower surface temperature than the frypan with type A stainless steel plate-pattern. It is concluded that Type B stainless steel plate-pattern with circular holes and vacant spaces of lines is very effective for minimizing a thermal distortion and lowering the surface temperature of an aluminum frypan during induction heating.
Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. At the welded contact region, a 'V'-shaped notch is formed on the surface of the molded part. This 'V'-notch deteriorates not only surface appearance but also mechanical strength of the molded part. To eliminate or reduce weldlines so as to improve the weldline strength, the mold temperature at the corresponding weld locations should be maintained higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. The present study implements high-frequency induction heating in order to rapidly raise mold surface temperature without a significant increase in cycle time. This induction heating enables to local mold heating so as to eliminate or reduce weldlines in an injection-molded plastic part. The effect of induction heating conditions on the weldline strength and surface appearance of an injection-molded part is investigated.
The procedure of semi-solid forming is composed of heating a billet, forming, compression holding and ejecting step. There are several methods to heat a billet during semi-solid forming process such as electric heating and induction heating. Usually in semi-solid forming process, induction heating has been adopted to achieve more uniform temperature of semi-solid material. Although induction heating is better method than any others, however, there is still difference of temperature between internal part and surface part of semi-solid material. Worse yet, in case of high liquid fraction of semi-solid material, liquid of the billet will flow down though solid of the billet still remains, which is very difficult to handle. In the present study, induction heating of semi-solid material with compulsive surface cooling has been performed to obtain uniform distribution of temperature. Distribution of temperature of the billets was measured and compared with that of conventional distribution of temperature. By this new induction heating method, not only temperature over the whole billet become uniform, but also control of temperature is possible.
Painting process or coating with acrylic film may improve the surface defects of injection molded parts deteriorated by weldlines. flow marks. and etc. However such processes increase the production costs and increase environmental problems. Recently various types of rapid mold heating & cooling technology have been developed in order to improve surface quality of products. In this study. the heating & cooling performance of a telephone case mold is investigated by heat transfer analysis, in which the rapid mold heating & reeling technology is applied. The surface temperature of the mold was measured using thermal image camera and compared with analysis results. The influence of the rapid mold heating & cooling technology on weldline appearance and cycle time increase was also examined.
High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact manner. Thanks to its capability of rapid heating and cooling of mold surface, it has been recently applied to the injection molding. The present study applies the high-frequency induction heating for elimination of weldlines in an injection-molded plastic part. To eliminate weldlines, the mold temperature of the corresponding weld locations should be maintained higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. Through experiments, the maximum temperature of $143^{\circ}C$ is obtained on the mold surface around the elliptic coil, while the temperature of the mold plate is lower than $60^{\circ}C$. An injection molding experiment is then performed with the aid of induction heating, and the effect of induction heating conditions on the surface appearance of the weldline is investigated.
Development of surface heating technology using hot jet impingement onto mold inner surface for improvement of pattern transcription. This study is focused on how to control the parameters related to hot jet impingement. The mass flow rate, the jet temperature and the duration of the impingement are major parameters. The nozzle design and other geometric configurations also affect the heat transfer to the surface. In terms of heat transfer analysis, the most important number is the heat transfer coefficient, which is influenced by the mass flow rate, nozzle design, distance between the nozzle tip and the surface. In summary, several parametric studies using the developed model are conducted to investigate the effects of mass flow rate, jet temperature and Heating Time in Surface heating technology using hot jet impingement onto mold.
High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a noncontact procedure. It has been recently applied to the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Though the induction heating has an advantage in terms of its rapid-heating capacity on the mold surface, it still has difficulty in efficient mold temperature control due to the restriction of an induction coil design suitable for the given mold shape. The present study proposed a localized mold heating method by means of selective use of mold material. For localized induction heating, an injection mold composed of ferromagnetic material and paramagnetic material is used. The electromagnetic induction concentrates on the ferromagnetic material, from which we can selectively heat for the local mold elements. The feasibility of the proposed heating method is investigated through an experimental measurement in terms of the heating efficiency on the localized mold surface.
This study presents a real neutral floor surface temperature in floor panel heating system(Ondol). The Ondol heating system can keep the constant temperature. However, the actual temperature when a person sits on a floor can be different from the surface temparature of a floor it self. The contents of this study are as follows : 1) measuring the spatial distributions of thermal conditions 2) the thermal sensation vote of residents is taken in order to investigate the relation between thermal condition and human thermal sensation in sedentary condition 3) estimating the neutral floor surface temperatures by measuring floor surface temperatures.
