Piston slap is one of the sources producing engine block surface vibration and mechanical noise. To analyze piston slap-induced vibration, a realistic but simple model is proposed and verified experimentally. A piston is modeled by 3 degree of freedom system and an impact point between piston skirt and cylinder wall by 2 degree of freedom system. Numerical simulation estimates impact forces of piston in cylinder, and the engine block surface vibration response is predicted by the convoluton of the impact forces with measured impulse responses. Experimental verification on the predicted response has been also performed by using a commercial 4-cylinder diesel engine. the predicted and experimental vibration responses confirm that the suggested model is practically useful.

A high-order spectral/boundary-element method is newly adapted as an efficient numerical tool. In this method, the velocity potential is expressed as the sum of surface potential and body potential. Then, surface potential is solved fly using the high-order spectral method and body potential is solved fly using the high-order boundary element method. Through the combination of these two methods, the wave-making problems fly a submerged sphere moving with the large amplitude oscillation are solved in time-domain. With the example calculations, nonlinear effects on free-surface profiles and hydrodynamic forces are shown and discussed.

The milling process is one of the most important metal removal processes in industry. Due to the complexities inherent to the cutter insert geometry and the milling cutter kinematics, these processes leave an analytically difficult to predict texture on the machined surface's hills and valleys. The instantaneous uncut chip cross sectional area may be estimated by the relative position between the workpiece and the cutter inserts. furthermore, since the cutting forces are proportional to the instantaneous uncut chip cross sectional area, the cutting forces in face milling operations can not be estimated easily. A new simulation program which is based upon the numerical method has been proposed to estimate the cutting force components, with the ability to predict the machined surface texture left by the face milling operation.
In This paper proposes the control algorithm for quadruped robots on irregularly sloped uneven surface. Body balance is important in stable running locomotion. Since the body balance is determined by the forces applied at the feet during touchdown phase, the ground reaction force is controlled for stable running. To control the forces at each foot, the desired force is generated. The generated desired force is compared with actual contact force, then, the difference between them modifies the foot trajectory. The desired force is generated by combination of the rate change of the angular and linear momentum at flight. Then the rate change of momentum determines each force distribution. The distribution of the force is carried out by fuzzy logic. The computer simulation is carried out with the commercial software RecurDyn$^{(R)}$. Dynamic model simulation program show that the stable running on the irregularly sloped uneven surface are accomplished by the proposed method.

It is well known that the surface tension forces can make a particle denser than water float when the size of the particle is of the order of 1 mm. This is deeply related to the basic mechanism enabling small insects to wander around on the pond surface and also to a newly emerging technology of self-assembly using capillary forces. For the quantitative understanding of this effect, we experimentally study the maximum density of a cylinder that can float on water and how fast the cylinder sinks when the density exceeds the maximum value. We compare our experimental results with the theoretical prediction and find good agreement between them.

Cutting forces in ball-end milling of slanted surfaces are calculated. The cutting area is determined from the Z-map of the surface geometry and current cutter location. The obtained cutting area is projected onto the cutter plane normal to the Z-axis and compared with cutting edge element location. Cutting force is calculated by integration of elemental cutting forces of engaged cutting edge elements. Experiments with various slanted angles were performed to verify the proposed cutting force estimation model. It is shown that the proposed method predicts cutting force effectively for any geometry including sculptured surfaces with cusp marks and surfaces with pockets and holes.

This study examined a PD controller and its application to automatic berthing control of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). First, a nonlinear mathematical model was established for the maneuvering of the USV in the presence of environmental forces. A PD control algorithm was then applied to control the rudder and propeller during an automatic berthing process. The algorithm consisted of two parts, namely the forward velocity control and heading angle control. The control algorithm was designed based on longitudinal and yaw dynamic models of the USV. The desired heading angle was obtained using the "line of sight" method. Finally, computer simulations of automatic USV berthing were performed to verify the proposed controller subjected to the influence of disturbance forces. The results of the simulation revealed a good performance of the developed berthing control system.

The three force components of shear spinning are calculated by a newly proposed deformation model. The spinning process is understooed as shearing deformation arter uniaxial yuelding by ending, and shear stress .tau.$\sub$rz/ becomes .kappa. the yueld limit in pure shear, in the deformation zone. The tangential forces are calculated and then the feed forces and normal foeces are obtained by assuming a nuiform distribution of roller pressure on the contact surface. An optimum contact area is obtaned by minimizing the bending energy required to obtain the assumed deformation mechanism. The calculated forces are compared with experimental data form published literature and present experiments. Good agreement cetween calculated and experimental values for working forces is obtained over a wide range of process variables.

This paper presents a procedure within the framework of linear potential theory for predicting the lateral drifting forces on a cylinder floating on the free surface of a finite depth water. The disturbance of a regular incident wave caused by the presence of the floating body is represented by the sum of the diffracted and radiated wave potentials, which are determined by using Green's theorem. The lateral drifting forces are calculated by use of momentum theorem, and the scattered waves are expressed in their asymptotic forms. The computed lateral drifting forces on a Lewis form cylinder(b/T=1.25, $\sigma$=0.95) for water depth to draft ratio of 5.0 are compared with the Kyozuka's experimental results for a deep water, and found to be in good agreement. The water depth effects on drifting forces of the same model are also calculated.
The shear spinning process, where the plastic deformation zone is localized in a very small portion of the workpiece, shows a promise for increasingly broader application to the production of axially symmetric parts. In this paper, the three components of working force are calculated by the newly proposed deformation model in which the spinning process is understood as shearing deformation after uniaxial yielding by bending, and shear stress, $\tau_{rz}$ becomes $\kappa$, yield limit in pure shear, in the deformation zone. The tangential forces are first calculated and the feed forces and the normal forces are obtained by the assumption of uniform distribution of roller pressure on the contact surface. The optimum contact area is obtained by minimizing the bending energy required to get the assumed deformation of the blank. The calculated forces are compared with experimental results. A comparison shows that theoretical prediction is reasonably in good agreement with experimental results.
