Direct numerical simulations of turbulent flows over riblet-mounted surfaces are performed to educe the mechanism of drag reduction by riblets. Numerical simulations are performed for flow fields with R $e_$\tau$/=180. For riblet ridge angle $\alpha$=60$^{\circ}$, two different riblet spacings of $s^+/=20 and 40 are used in this study. The computed drag on the riblet surfaces is in good agreement with existing computational and experimental data. The mean velocity profiles show upward and downward shifts in the log-law for drag-decreasing and drag-increasing cases, respectively Turbulence statistics above the riblets are computed and compared with those above a flat plate. The purpose of this study is in two categories: first, to understand the drag reduction mechanism on riblet surface, second, to verify our own code by comparison of the present results with those from previous studies.udies.

DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) plasma actuator was designed for aerodynamic drag reduction using plasma flow control, and the drag reduction was measured by wind-tunnel tests using 2D test model. At the zero wind velocity, the plasma flow control had no effect on the drag reduction because the flow separation and surface friction drag were not occurred. At the wind velocity of 2m/s, 9.7% of drag was reduced by the flow separation control. The drag reduction decreased as the wind velocity increased.
The large-eddy simulation(LES) was carried out to evaluate the drag and static pressure acting on the blade surface of a small-size axial fan(SSAF) under the condition of unsteady-state, incompressible fluid and three-dimensional coordination. The axial component of drag coefficient increases with the increase of operating load, but the radial components have negligible sizes regardless of operating loads. Otherwise, the static pressures acting on the blade surfaces of SSAF show different distributions around the operating point of D equivalent to the stall. Also, with the increase of operating load, the static pressures acting on the pressure and suction surfaces of blade concentrate at the tips and leading-edges as a whole.
The objective of this study is to increase lift and decrease drag of an airfoil by delaying flow separation with piezo-ceramic actuators. The airfoil used is NACA 0012 and the chord length is 30cm. An experiment is performed at the freestream velocity of 15m/s at which the Reynolds number is $3{\times}10^5$. Seven rectangular actuators are attached to the airfoil surface and move up and down based on the electric signal. At the attack angle of $16^{\circ}$, the separation point is delayed downstream due to momentum addition induced by the movement of the actuators. Drag and lift are measured using an in-house 2-dimensional load cell and the surface pressures are also measured. Lift is increased by 10%, drag is reduced by 50%, and the efficiency is increased to 170%. The flow fields with and without control are visualized using the smoke-wire and tuft techniques.

Performance of a NACA 634-021 hydrofoil in motion under and in close proximity of a free surface for a large range of angles of attack is studied. Lift and drag coefficients of the hydrofoil at different submergence depths are investigated both numerically and experimentally, for 0° ≤ AoA ≤ 30° at a Reynolds number of 105. The results of the numerical study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The agreement confirms the new finding that for a submerged hydrofoil operating at high angles of attack close to a free surface, the interaction between the hydrofoil-motion induced waves on the free surface and the hydrofoil results in mitigation of the flow separation characteristics on the suction side of the foil and delay in stall, and improvement in hydrofoil performance. In comparing with a baseline case, results suggest a 55% increase in maximum lift coefficient and 90% average improvement in performance for, based on the lift-to-drag ratio, but it is also observed significant decrease of lift-to-drag ratio at lower angles of attack. Flow details obtained from combined finite volume and volume of fluid numerical methods provide insight into the underlying enhancement mechanism, involving interaction between the hydrofoil and the free surface.

The weld pool convection problem that occurs during the stationary GTA welding has been studied, considering the four driving forces for weld pool convection, i.e., the electromagnetic force, the buoyancy force, the aerodynamic drag force, and the surface tension force at the weld pool surface. In the numerical simulation, the difficulties associated with the irregular moving liquid-solid interface have been successfully overcome by adopting a Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. In the experiments to show the validity of the numerical analysis, a deep periphery and shallow centerpentrated weld pool shape was observed from the etched specimen. It could be revealed that this type of weld pool shape could be simulated, only when some of aerodynamic drag force distributions are considered. Although slight disagreement arose, the calculated and the observed weld pool shapes were in a reasonable agreement.

We investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of a three-dimensional (3D) wing with an endplate in the vicinity of the free surface by solving incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model. The endplate causes a blockage effect on the flow, and an additional viscous effect especially near the endplate. These combined effects of the endplate significantly reduce the magnitudes of the velocities under the lower surface of the wing, thereby enhancing aerodynamic performance in terms of the force coefficients. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio of a wing with an endplate is increased 46% compared to that of wing without an endplate at the lowest clearance. The tip vortex of a wing-with-endplate (WWE) moved laterally to a greater extent than that of a wing-without-endplate (WOE). This causes a decrease in the induced drag, resulting in a reduction in the total drag.

Wind tunnel testing for flow-through model is necessary for performance prediction of an aircraft with air-breathing jet engine. Internal drag correction and wall correction are performed to acquire preciser wind tunnel test data. Many test runs are generally required to correct internal drag and wall interference in wind tunnel test. In this study we investigated more effective correction schemes using the response surface method. Even though the number of tests required for these schemes was much smaller than that for conventional methods, the differences between corrections using these schemes and conventional methods were similar level with the uncertainty of measurement except for the data near the boundaries.

The flow around a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) has been investigated numerically to improve the resistant performance by modifying the hull form of the ROV. In the case of the base hull form considered in this study, form drag rather than friction drag was the dominant component of total drag. Subsequently, the surfaces that were most susceptible to local pressure effects were modified to give them a more streamlined shape. Eleven different hull forms were chosen to undergo surface modification for drag reduction. In addition, four different boat-tail appendages with different slant angles were installed at the stern to reduce the wake vortices that are induced by the local regions of very low pressure. Consequently, a total of 11 different hull forms for drag reduction were considered. The final hull form, which combined the hull for which surface modification resulted in the lowest drag with a boat-tail appendage with a 15-degree slant angle, resulted in a drag reduction of 20%.
In mountainous rivers, the drag force acting on cobbles abundant in the riverbed surface is important in predicting behavior and response of the river. However there is little research for the drag coefficients of cobbles. This paper is to carry out the experiments for drag force of cobble and analyze the relation between the cobble shape and the drag coefficient. The effects of the shape factor on the drag coefficients $C_D$ when the long axis or the short axis of the cobbles are parallel to the direction of flow velocity were analyzed. The coefficient of drag force increased with the nominal diameter Reynolds number $R_{ep}$. The drag coefficients are greater in short axis than long axis. The coefficient of determination of the relation between $C_D$ and $R_{ep}$ is greater in long axis than short axis. This means that the drag forces acting on the irregularly-shaped cobbles depend on the axis. A change of the drag force distribution has brought about the alternative swing of cobbles. For $R_{ep}$ > 12,000, the amplitude of the swing has been increased sharply and especially was greater in short axis than long axis.
