Orientations of liquid crystal molecules on a surface of a film of photoreactive polyvinylcinnamate were investigated in order to apply as an alignment layer of LCD. When the polyvinylcinnamate film was exposed to linearly polarized W light, optical anisotropy was induced in the film through a selective photoreaction. Liquid crystal molecules on a surface of the film was aligned along the oriented polymer chain direction through intermolecular interactions. Thermal and light stability of the photoaligned LC cell were studied by investigating LC alignment changes after the alignment layer was treated with heat and W light. When the film was exposed with linearly polarized UV several times, the LC alignment was induced only along the final UV exposure direction.

(PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin films that consisted of positively charged poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were fabricated on a glass substrate by an applying voltage layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method. In this study, the microstructure and optical properties of the (PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin films coated on glass substrate were measured as a function of the applied voltage on the Pt electrodes. When 1.0 V was applied to a Pt electrode in a PDDA and $SiO_2$ solution, the thickness of the $(PDDA/SiO_2)_{10}$ thin film increased from 79 nm to 166 nm. The surface roughness also increased from 15.21 nm to 33.25 nm because the adsorption volume of the oppositely charged PDDA and $SiO_2$ solution increased. Especially, when the voltage was applied to the Pt electrode in the $SiO_2$ solution, the thickness increase of the (PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin film was larger than that obtained when using the PDDA solution. The refractive index of the fabricated (PDDA/$SiO_2$) thin film was ca. n = 1.31~1.32. The transmittance of the glass substrate coated by (PDDA/$SiO_2$)6 thin film with a thickness of 106 nm increased from ca. 91.37 to 95.74% in the visible range.
The bonding structure and composition of silicon nitride (SiNx) films were investigated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). SiNx films were deposited on Si substrate at $340^{\circ}C$ using a conventional PECVD system. The compositions of Si and N in SiNx films were confirmed by using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. The surface morphology of SiNx films was also analyzed by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the contents of NH(at. %) is the reverse related with those of SiH corresponding to the result of FT-IR. we conclude that a quantitative analysis on SiNx films can be possible through a precise detection of the contents of H in SiNx films with a FT-IR analysis only.
In the alternative current plasma display panel(AC-PDP) technology, it is very important to remove the image sticking for improving an image quality. In this paper, we have investigated the driving method of alternative current plasma display panel(AC-PDP) for preventing image sticking. We have investigated the driving method of alternative current plasma display panel(AC-PDP) for preventing image sticking. The preventing method of image sticking was proposed by adopting the Sticking Remove Pulse(SRP). The variation of brightness is most affected by the MgO to be formed at the surface of the phosphor layer. As a result, the image sticking is reduced when the driving method adopted an SRP.

Nanocrystalline powder of zirconia stabilized with 8 mol% yttria (YSZ) has been synthesized through oxalate process using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ and $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ as starting materials. Understanding of the characteristic changes of YSZ powder as a function of processing conditions is crucial in developing dense and porous microstructures required for fuel cell applications. In this research, microstructure change, surface area, particle shape and particle size were measured as a function of different processing conditions such as calcination temperature, stirring speed and concentration of starting materials. The resultant crystallite sizes were calculated by XRD-LB (X-Ray Diffraction Line-Broadening) method, BET method, and morphology of the crystal was observed in TEM and FE-SEM. The TEM examination showed that the powder synthesized with 0.7 M of YSZ concentration had a spherical morphology with sizes ranging from 20 to 40 nm. However, the powder was gradually aggregated above 1.0 M of YSZ concentration with the aggregation being intensified as the YSZ concentration was increased.

As various flexible display products are released, the demand for high-performance colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) film is continuously increasing. The primary purpose of this study is to establish a systematic procedure for optimizing the optical performance of CPI films by applying the response surface method. After selecting three key factors (monomer type, stirring time for varnish synthesis, and maximum temperature of vacuum furnace for film production) affecting optical performance based on experiences and references, CPI films were manufactured according to the experimental sequence designed by the central composite design, and then the yellowness index (YI) and optical transmittance (Tr) of the films were measured. When producing a CPI film by pouring varnish into a petri dish, the change in optical properties according to thickness should be considered, and there was a meaningful linear relationship between YI and Tr. The species of monomer and the maximum temperature were the critical factors that had an influence on YI and Tr, respectively. It is expected that the procedure proposed in this study can serve as a starting point for CPI film optimization studies considering the other factors that were not considered and responses such as thermal properties.

The large surface micro machining system includes the equipments and processes for manufacturing the ultra precision micro patterned products with large surface through the mechanical machining. Recent major issue on the micro machining technology may be the development of optical parts for the back light unit of display which has the largest market. This special issue makes up with three parts; the large surface micro machining system and machine, machining process and forming process. In this paper, the state-of-the-art and core technology of large surface micro machining system is introduced with focus on the manufacturing technology for the back light unit of LCD TV. Then, some research results on the development of a roll die lathe is introduced which involves the concept of machine design, improvement of thermal characteristics in the spindle system, improvement of relative parallelism and straightness between spindle system and long stroke feed table, machining of micro pitch patterns. Finally, the direct forming process is introduced as the future work in the large surface micro machining field.

Mirror surface machining for large area flattening in the display field has a problem such as a tool wear and a increase in machining time due to large area machining. It should be studied to decrease machining time and tool wear. In this paper, multi-tool machining method using a PCD tool and a SCD tool was applied in order to decrease machining time and tool wear. Machining characteristics (cutting force, machined surface and surface roughness) of PCD tool and SCD tool were evaluated in order to apply PCD tool to flattening machining. Based on basic experiments, the PCD/SCD multi-tool method and the SCD single-tool method were compared through surface roughness and machining time for appllying large area mold machining.

Superhydrophobic $SiO_2$ thin films were successfully fabricated on a glass substrate by sol-gel method. To fabricate $SiO_2$ thin film with a high roughness, $SiO_2$ nano particles were added into tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) solution. The prepared $SiO_2$ thin film without an addition of $SiO_2$ nano particles showed a very flat surface with ca. 1.27 nm of root mean square (RMS) roughness. Otherwise, the $SiO_2$ thin films fabricated by using coating solutions added $SiO_2$ nano particles of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 wt% showed a RMS roughness of ca. 44.10 nm, ca. 69.58 nm, ca. 80.66 nm, respectively. To modify the surfaces of $SiO_2$ thin films to hydrophobic surface, a hydrophobic treatment was carried out using a fluoroalkyltrimethoxysilane (FAS). The $SiO_2$ thin films with a high rough surface were changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic surface after the FAS treatment. Especially, the prepared $SiO_2$ thin film with a RMS roughness of 80.66 nm showed a water contact angle of $163^{\circ}$.
In medical imaging, three-dimensional (3D) display using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) as a portable file format can give intuitive information more efficiently on the World Wide Web (WWW). The web-based 3D visualization of functional images combined with anatomical images has not studied much in systematic ways. The goal of this study was to achieve a simultaneous observation of 3D anatomic and functional models with planar images on the WWW, providing their locational information in 3D space with a measuring implement using VRML. MRI and ictal-interictal SPECT images were obtained from one epileptic patient. Subtraction ictal SPECT co-registered to MRI (SISCOM) was performed to improve identification of a seizure focus. SISCOM image volumes were held by thresholds above one standard deviation (1-SD) and two standard deviations (2-SD). SISCOM foci and boundaries of gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the MRI volume were segmented and rendered to VRML polygonal surfaces by marching cube algorithm. Line profiles of x and y-axis that represent real lengths on an image were acquired and their maximum lengths were the same as 211.67 mm. The real size vs. the rendered VRML surface size was approximately the ratio of 1 to 605.9. A VRML measuring tool was made and merged with previous VRML surfaces. User interface tools were embedded with Java Script routines to display MRI planar images as cross sections of 3D surface models and to set transparencies of 3D surface models. When transparencies of 3D surface models were properly controlled, a fused display of the brain geometry with 3D distributions of focal activated regions provided intuitively spatial correlations among three 3D surface models. The epileptic seizure focus was in the right temporal lobe of the brain. The real position of the seizure focus could be verified by the VRML measuring tool and the anatomy corresponding to the seizure focus could be confirmed by MRI planar images crossing 3D surface models. The VRML application developed in this study may have several advantages. Firstly, 3D fused display and control of anatomic and functional image were achieved on the m. Secondly, the vector analysis of a 3D surface model was defined by the VRML measuring tool based on the real size. Finally, the anatomy corresponding to the seizure focus was intuitively detected by correlations with MRI images. Our web based visualization of 3-D fusion image and its localization will be a help to online research and education in diagnostic radiology, therapeutic radiology, and surgery applications.
